Semi-supervised classification using tree-based self-organizing maps
2011
Published version of an article from the following onference prodeedings: AI 2011: Advances in Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher on SpringerLink: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-25832-9_3 This paper presents a classifier which uses a tree-based Neural Network (NN), and uses both, unlabeled and labeled instances. First, we learn the structure of the data distribution in an unsupervised manner. After convergence, and once labeled data become available, our strategy tags each of the clusters according to the evidence provided by the instances. Unlike other neighborhood-based schemes, our classifier uses only a small set of representatives whose cardinality can be m…
On utilizing dependence-based information to enhance micro-aggregation for secure statistical databases
2011
Published version of an article in the journal: Pattern Analysis and Applications. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10044-011-0199-9 We consider the micro-aggregation problem which involves partitioning a set of individual records in a micro-data file into a number of mutually exclusive and exhaustive groups. This problem, which seeks for the best partition of the micro-data file, is known to be NP-hard, and has been tackled using many heuristic solutions. In this paper, we would like to demonstrate that in the process of developing micro-aggregation techniques (MATs), it is expedient to incorporate information about the dependence between the random variable…
RMS Based Health Indicators for Remaining Useful Lifetime Estimation of Bearings
2022
Estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of bearings from healthy to faulty is important for predictive maintenance. The bearing fault severity can be estimated based on the energy or root mean square (RMS) of vibration signals, and a stopping criterion can be set based on a threshold given by an ISO standard. However, the vibration RMS is often not monotonically increasing with damage, which renders a challenge for predicting the RUL. This study proposes a novel method for splitting the vibration signal into multiple frequency bands before RMS calculations to generate multiple health indicators. Monotonic health indicators are identified using the Spearman coefficient, and the RUL is aft…
Digital Servitization: Strategies for Handling Customization and Customer Interaction
2021
This conceptual chapter utilizes extant servitization and digitalization theorization and discusses the impact of digital servitization on customization/standardization and customer interaction. The study argues that the transformation toward digital servitization is complex and goes far beyond the technological dimension. The study contributes to the digital servitization literature by demonstrating that industrial services shift from customized and co-created to mainly standardized-provided and informating when they are digitalized. These insights can assist managers of servitized manufacturing firms who wish to utilize digital technologies in their service provision.
A Decision-support Algorithm for Self-management of Anticoagulation Therapy Used in a Smartphone Application
2019
Warfarin for anticoagulation therapy is used by patients with specific cardiovascular diseases to control the ability of blood clotting. Traditional ways for self-management of the therapy are based on paper forms and procedures. This paper presents an algorithm developed for the smartphone application “Warfarin Guide”, which is a computer-assisted decision-support system used to help patients with self-management of their anticoagulation therapy related to International Normalized Ratio (INR) values. The algorithm was based on clinical guidelines for Warfarin therapy and it was adapted for the software application to address challenges with regular INR checks and adjustments for temporary …
Distributed Learning Automata-based S-learning scheme for classification
2019
This paper proposes a novel classifier based on the theory of Learning Automata (LA), reckoned to as PolyLA. The essence of our scheme is to search for a separator in the feature space by imposing an LA-based random walk in a grid system. To each node in the grid, we attach an LA whose actions are the choices of the edges forming a separator. The walk is self-enclosing, and a new random walk is started whenever the walker returns to the starting node forming a closed classification path yielding a many-edged polygon. In our approach, the different LA attached to the different nodes search for a polygon that best encircles and separates each class. Based on the obtained polygons, we perform …
Design of an Air Management System for a Dry Room and Utilization of Waste Heat
2021
Master's thesis in Renewable energy (ENE500) This thesis presents the design of an air management system used in a dry room fora lithium-ion battery factory using a Matlab/Simulink environment. The sizing of the system is based on the 32 GWh battery factory, currently under construction by Morrow Batteries in Arendal, Norway. The generic air management system from the literature review was used as a base for the general layout and initial values. Combining coolers and a desiccant dehumidification wheel was the optimal solution for the dehumidification system. The molecular sieve was the selected desiccant due to its high performance at low relative humidity. The outlet air quality from the …
Sampling based average classifier fusion
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/369613 Classifier fusion is used to combine multiple classification decisions and improve classification performance. While various classifier fusion algorithms have been proposed in literature, average fusion is almost always selected as the baseline for comparison. Little is done on exploring the potential of average fusion and proposing a better baseline. In this paper we empirically investigate the behavior of soft labels and classifiers in average fusion. As a result, we find that; by proper sampling of soft labels and classifiers, t…
The public procurement of information systems: dialectics in requirements specification
2017
When acquiring information systems, public entities face a dilemma. On the one hand, they want to procure the system that best suits their needs, which often requires lengthy dialogues with vendors. At the same time, they are restricted by government regulations that mandate limited dialogue in the interests of transparency and equal opportunities for all vendors. To examine how public entities deal with this, we followed three procurement projects in Norway. We show that this dilemma manifests itself as a dialectic between the thesis of getting the system requirements right and the antithesis of strictly adhering to regulations. Public entities search for a resolution of this dialectic thr…
