Modified most-probable-number technique for the specific determination of Escherichia coli from environmental samples using a fluorogenic method

1990

A specific and senstive modification of the most-probable-number (MPN) technique by addition of 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG) to both presumptive and confirmatory media was performed. The use of this modification allows the precise determination of Escherichia coli from marine samples (seawater, sediment and shellfish) within 7 days compared to 10–12 days required by using of the standard methodology. No false-positive isolates for fluorescence reaction have been observed, although one E. coli strain fluorescent-positive on agar was isolated from nonfluorescent tubes. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the species most frequently detected from tubes with gas and fluorescence production …

Liikkumisen kannustimet muistisairauksien riskiryhmään kuuluvilla ikääntyneillä

2022

Liikunnallisesti aktiivinen elämäntapa ylläpitää tehokkaasti ikääntyneiden terveyttä ja toimintakykyä. Liikunnan harrastamiseen vaikuttavat kuitenkin monet yksilölliset tekijät, jotka tulisi huomioida kannustettaessa ikääntyneitä henkilöitä liikkumaan. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, minkälaiset liikkumisen kannustimet ovat yhteydessä aktiiviseen liikunnan harrastamiseen ikääntyneillä ihmisillä, joilla riski muistisairauteen sairastumiseen on kohonnut. Tämä poikkileikkaustutkimus on osa laajempaa FINGER-tutkimusta (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability), johon osallistui 1 260 keski-iältään 69-vuotiasta henkilöä. Tutkittavien fyys…

Dampness and student-reported social climate: two multilevel mediation models.

2021

Background Little previous research has analysed the relationship between schools' indoor air problems and schools' social climate. In this study, we analysed a) whether observed mould and dampness in a school building relates to students' perceptions of school climate (i.e. teacher-student relationships and class spirit) and b) whether reported subjective indoor air quality (IAQ) at the school level mediates this relationship. Methods The data analysed was created by merging two nationwide data sets: survey data from students, including information on subjective IAQ (N = 25,101 students), and data from schools, including information on mould and dampness in school buildings (N = 222). The …

The management of multiple sclerosis by reference centers in Italy: health demands and needs in Campania region.

2015

This cross-sectional study has investigated the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Campania Region (Italy). A survey involving all the reference centers for MS in Campania Region was conducted from March to August 2011. Centers responded to a web-administered questionnaire on management and clinical characteristics of MS patients. In the study period, 3263 patients (mean age 37 years, 66 % females) accessed the centers. Patients received a first diagnosis of MS in 161 cases (4.9 %). About 37 % of the subjects without a previous diagnosis came to the centers on their own initiative. All patients underwent a complete neurological ex…

"Ikke alle piloter flyr" : implementering av telemedisin i norske kommuner

2019

Masteroppgave helse- og sosialinformatikk HSI500 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Running pilots is a widespread way of conducting innovations in the Norwegian health service, many of these projects are not implemented permanently or lead to lasting changes in services. Solutions based on Telemedicine are being tested, but the implementation rate does not match the existing ambitions. The aim of this study is to gain increased knowledge of some of the factors that are required for pilot projects in Telemedicine to go from pilots to permanent solutions, especially focused on stakeholders and their role. The thesis question is «What is the significance of different stakeholders in the municipalit…

Analysis of the impact of sex and age on the variation in the prevalence of antinuclear autoantibodies in Polish population: a nationwide observation…

2022

AbstractThe detection of antinuclear autoantibody (ANA) is dependent on many factors and varies between the populations. The aim of the study was first to assess the prevalence of ANA in the Polish adult population depending on age, sex and the cutoff threshold used for the results obtained. Second, we estimated the occurrence of individual types of ANA-staining patterns. We tested 1731 patient samples using commercially available IIFA using two cutoff thresholds of 1:100 and 1:160. We found ANA in 260 participants (15.0%), but the percentage of positive results strongly depended on the cutoff level. For a cutoff threshold 1:100, the positive population was 19.5% and for the 1:160 cutoff th…

Development of the first marmoset-specific DNA microarray (EUMAMA): a new genetic tool for large-scale expression profiling in a non-human primate

2007

Abstract Background The common marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus), a small non-endangered New World primate native to eastern Brazil, is becoming increasingly used as a non-human primate model in biomedical research, drug development and safety assessment. In contrast to the growing interest for the marmoset as an animal model, the molecular tools for genetic analysis are extremely limited. Results Here we report the development of the first marmoset-specific oligonucleotide microarray (EUMAMA) containing probe sets targeting 1541 different marmoset transcripts expressed in hippocampus. These 1541 transcripts represent a wide variety of different functional gene classes. Hybridisation of …

mRNA expression profiles of primary high-grade central osteosarcoma are preserved in cell lines and xenografts

2011

Abstract Background Conventional high-grade osteosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor, which is most prevalent in adolescence. Survival rates of osteosarcoma patients have not improved significantly in the last 25 years. Aiming to increase this survival rate, a variety of model systems are used to study osteosarcomagenesis and to test new therapeutic agents. Such model systems are typically generated from an osteosarcoma primary tumor, but undergo many changes due to culturing or interactions with a different host species, which may result in differences in gene expression between primary tumor cells, and tumor cells from the model system. We aimed to investigate whether gene expressio…

Women's Emotions Towards the Mobile Phone

2012

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether women's emotions associate differently with the mobile phone depending on the type of family in which they live. James A. Russell's circumplex model of affect which explores four main emotional dimensions, excitement, distress, depression and contentment, was applied. The article is based on the female sub-sample (N = 3,704) of nationally representative survey data collected from Italy, France, the UK, Germany and Spain (N = 7,255) in 2009. The results show that it is women living in blended families who seem to associate more distress and less feelings of contentment with the mobile phone than women living in other types of family. peerRe…
