Leading edge erosion of wind turbine blades: Effects of blade surface curvature on rain droplet impingement kinematics
2020
Abstract The issue of leading edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades (WTBs) is a complex problem that reduces the aerodynamic efficiency of blades, and affects the overall cost of energy. Several research efforts are being made at the moment to counter erosion of WTBs such as-testing of advanced coating materials together with development of high-fidelity computational models. However, the majority of these studies assume the coated surfaces as flat, while the surface curvature and the shape of the aerofoil at the blade’s leading-edge exposed to such rain fields is neglected. The present study questions the assumption of a flat surface, in the context of LEE of WTBs, and provides guideli…
The planar two-body problem for spheroids and disks
2021
We outline a new method suggested by Conway (2016) for solving the two-body problem for solid bodies of spheroidal or ellipsoidal shape. The method is based on integrating the gravitational potential of one body over the surface of the other body. When the gravitational potential can be analytically expressed (as for spheroids or ellipsoids), the gravitational force and mutual gravitational potential can be formulated as a surface integral instead of a volume integral, and solved numerically. If the two bodies are infinitely thin disks, the surface integral has an analytical solution. The method is exact as the force and mutual potential appear in closed-form expressions, and does not invol…
Macroscopic expressions of molecular adiabatic compressibility of methyl and ethyl caprate under high pressure and high temperature
2014
The molecular compressibility, which is a macroscopic quantity to reveal the microcompressibility by additivity of molecular constitutions, is considered as a fixed value for specific organic liquids. In this study, we introduced two calculated expressions of molecular adiabatic compressibility to demonstrate its pressure and temperature dependency. The first one was developed from Wada’s constant expression based on experimental data of density and sound velocity. Secondly, by introducing the 2D fitting expressions and their partial derivative of pressure and temperature, molecular compressibility dependency was analyzed further, and a 3D fitting expression was obtained from the calculated…
Observation of an Excited $B^{\pm}_c$ Meson State with the ATLAS Detector
2014
A search for excited states of the B±c meson is performed using 4.9 fb-1 of 7 TeV and 19.2 fb-1 of 8 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. A new state is observed through its hadronic transition to the ground state, with the latter detected in the decay B±c→J/ψπ±. The state appears in the m(Bc±π+π-)-m(Bc±)-2m(π±) mass difference distribution with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. The mass of the observed state is 6842±4±5 MeV, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The mass and decay of this state are consistent with expectations for the second S-wave state of the B±c meson, B±c(2S).
Palladium-catalyzed formation and reactions of iodo- and bromosiloxane intermediates
2012
Polysiloxanes are useful materials because of their functionality, such as high thermal stability, electrical resistance, and hydrophobicity. In this regard, we studied palladium-catalyzed formation of iodo-and bromopolysiloxanes from two types of hydrosiloxanes, alpha,omega-dihydropoly(dimethylsiloxane) (1) and cyclotetra(hydromethylsiloxane) (2), and their reactions. Treatment of 1 with mixtures of cyclic ethers or lactones and MeI or allylBr in the presence of a catalytic amount of PdCl2 gave the corresponding alpha,omega-bis(haloalkoxy and haloalkanoyloxy) poly(dimethylsiloxane)s in good yields, via iodo-and bromopoly(dimethylsiloxane) intermediates. Transformation of the iodobutoxy-ter…
Phase sticking in one-dimensional Josephson junction chains
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.88.104501 We studied current-voltage characteristics of long one-dimensional Josephson junction chains with Josephson energy much larger than charging energy, EJ EC. In this regime, typical I-V curves of the samples consist of a supercurrent-like branch at low-bias voltages followed by a voltage-independent chain current branch, Ichain at high bias. Our experiments showed that Ichain is not only voltage-independent but it is also practically temperature-independent up to T=0.7TC. We have successfully model the tr…
