Network-based indices of individual and collective advising impacts in mathematics
2020
AbstractAdvising and mentoring Ph.D. students is an increasingly important aspect of the academic profession. We define and interpret a family of metrics (collectively referred to as “a-indices”) that can potentially be applied to “ranking academic advisors” using the academic genealogical records of scientists, with the emphasis on taking into account not only the number of students advised by an individual, but also subsequent academic advising records of those students. We also define and calculate the extensions of the proposed indices that account for student co-advising (referred to as “adjusted a-indices”). In addition, we extend some of the proposed metrics to ranking universities a…
ISTehnology – integrated Approach to IS Development and Benefits of its Using
2011
The system ISTechnology and benefits of its usage are analyzed in the paper. ISTechnology provides an integrated approach to business modeling and development of information systems. The system consists of a meta-model and applications. The meta-model enables defining of a platform independent business model of the organization. The applications provide the definition and interpretation of the business model. Interpretation of the business model provides functionality of the information system in the selected platform. The lessons learned confirm that the development and maintenance cost of information systems can be significantly reduced by use of the ISTechnology. The paper describes addi…
Kinematic and Elastostatic Design Optimisation of the 3-DOF Gantry-Tau Parallel Kinematic Manipulator
2009
Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher:http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2009.2.1 One of the main advantages of the Gantry-Tau machine is a large accessible workspace/footprint ratio compared to many other parallel machines. The Gantry-Tau improves this ration further by allowing a change of assembly mode without internal link collisions or collisions between the links and end-effector. The reconfigurable Gantry-Tau kinematic design obtained by multi-objective optimisation according to this paper gives the following features: 3-D workspace/footprint ration is more than 3.19, lowest Cartesian stiffness in the workspa…
Measuring Distraction at the Levels of Tactical and Strategic Control: The Limits of Capacity-Based Measures for Revealing Unsafe Visual Sampling Mod…
2011
The control theory of driving suggests that driver distraction can be analyzed as a breakdown of control at three levels. Common approach for analyzing distraction experimentally is to utilize capacity-based measures to assess distraction at the level of operational control. Three driving simulation experiments with 61 participants were organized to evaluate which kind of measures could be used to analyze drivers' tactical visual sampling models and the related effects of distraction while searching textual information on in-car display. The effects of two different text types were evaluated. The utilized capacity-based measures seemed to be insufficient for revealing participants' tactical…
An Approach for Network Outage Detection from Drive-Testing Databases
2012
A data-mining framework for analyzing a cellular network drive testing database is described in this paper. The presented method is designed to detect sleeping base stations, network outage, and change of the dominance areas in a cognitive and self-organizing manner. The essence of the method is to find similarities between periodical network measurements and previously known outage data. For this purpose, diffusion maps dimensionality reduction and nearest neighbor data classification methods are utilized. The method is cognitive because it requires training data for the outage detection. In addition, the method is autonomous because it uses minimization of drive testing (MDT) functionalit…
Medical masks and Respirators for the Protection of Healthcare Workers from SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses
2020
The use of medical masks and respirators as personal protective equipment is pivotal to reducing the level of biological hazard to which healthcare workers are exposed during the outbreak of highly diffusible pathogens, such as the recent novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Unfortunately, during this pandemic, supplies are rapidly running out worldwide, with potential consequences for the rate of occupational infections. Also, knowledge about specific characteristics of respirators is of utmost importance to select the proper type according to the clinical setting. A wide variety of literature is available on the topic, but mostly based on Influenza viruses infection models. Clinical evidence on …
Physico-Chemical Properties and Use of Waste Biomass-Derived Activated Carbons
2017
Activated carbons are widely used in different industrial processes for example as adsorbents or as support materials. Advantageously these carbons can be prepared from residual or waste biomass materials. Different raw material type and activation procedure plays an important role in the physico-chemical characteristics of activated carbon e.g. surface area, porosity and pore distribution. In this study, activated carbon has been prepared from lignocellulosic waste materials (e.g. saw dust, lignin residue) and characterized by a number of methods. Further, adsorption properties of carbons were evaluated. Adsorption capacity of dyes and metals was high (methylene blue dye 86 % and zinc meta…
Practice for determining friction in hydraulic winch systems
2020
This paper presents a method for estimating friction in hydraulic active heave compensated (AHC) offshore winches. The method is a two-step approach where the first step is to model the friction loss in the hydraulic motors based on data from the sub-supplier. The second step requires real-life testing, where the remaining friction losses in the winch system is identified and modeled. In this context, a practice is characterized by obtaining a friction loss estimation with the highest possible accuracy over the widest possible range of operating conditions with a limited amount of experimental work. The method benefits from the use of parametric models, sub-supplier data, and real-life meas…
