Editors' Introduction

2016

This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the 11th International Symposium on Cognition, Logic and Communication which took place in Riga, at the University of Latvia on December 10-11 2015. The choice of topic reflected a growing understanding in the community of linguists and cognitive scientists that fundamental grammatical features of language, in particular the mass/count distinction, use of number words, and plurality, reflect our grasp of non-linguistic numerical operations, in particular individuation and measurement.

Neuroética: ¿Las bases cerebrales de una ética universal con relevancia política?

2010

At the beginning of the XXI century neuroethics was born as a part of bioethics and also as a new kind of knowledge, capable of discovering the neural basis of the human behaviour. From that basis some neuroscientists intend to outline the foundations for a universal ethics. The article 1) analyses critically the process of foundation of such universal ethics, 2) takes into account the human cooperation paradox in order to complete the process, 3) tries to evaluate the contributions of neuroethics to ethics and its suitability to outline the foundations of a universal ethics.<br><br>En el siglo XXI nace la neurociencia de la ética con la pretensión de ser un nuevo saber (la neur…

BOOK REVIEW: MARQUES, T. & WIKFORSS, Å (EDS.), Shifting Concepts (Oxford University Press, 2020, 284 Pages).

2021

Abstract In this review I provide a brief analysis of the main features of the collective volume Shifting Concepts (Oxford University Press, 2020), edited by Teresa Marques and Asa Wikforss. The volume addresses several related topics, and it contains contributions from psychologists and philosophers. It deals with the topic of concept variation understood in a broad sense, for it tackles diachronic, contextual, interpersonal and even intrapersonal variation; besides, the second part of the book is devoted to the topic of concept revision and amelioration. I provide a brief description of the book and then I critically assess each of the contributions.

Isomerization of α-pinene oxide over ZSM-5 based micro-mesoporous materials

2018

Abstract Few types of ZSM-5 based micro-mesoporous materials obtained via a dual template method, steam-assisted conversion and dual-functional templating were evaluated in α-pinene oxide isomerization. Complete conversion and the highest selectivity towards trans-carveol (ca. 40–43%) were achieved over X-ray amorphous micro-mesoporous aluminosilicates as well as mesoporous molecular sieves AlSi-SBA-15. In addition, X-ray amorphous samples containing the secondary building units of ZSM-5 zeolite demonstrated the highest rate of α-pinene oxide isomerization. The yield of the most desired product trans-carveol to a large extent depends on the accessibility of acid sites to the reagents molecu…

Macroeconomic determinants of Peruvian migration flows

2020

The objective of this paper is to determine the variables associated with the weight that Peruvian immigration has in the total immigration in Chile for the period 2005-2014. The initial hypothesis is that the Peruvian migratory flow has a social and economic component. The results showed that an increase in the Human Development Index (HDI) in favor of Chile increases the migratory flow. On the other hand, a larger education budget in favor of Chile decreases the migratory flow of Peruvian citizens.

Sobre la Risa y el Malestar en la Cultura / On Laughter and Discomfort in Civilization

2017

Palabras clave: Risa, Malestar en la Cultura, Placer, Subversión, BakhtinAbstractThis paper aims to present the relations between laughter and cultural discomfort, analysing the works of S. Freud, H. Plessner and M. Bakhtin. We will propose that l…

Political and religious aspects of community according to Kant

2016

Based on the concept of community, Kant's conception of religion may be connected, on my view, to the question of which mental attitude is suitable for the collective life of human society. It is possible to imagine a successful community, even if such a community does not exist in the empirical world, and to be oriented toward this ideal without ever being able to realize it. According to Kant, human moral self-understanding is developed by human reason, and this explains the structural similarity between the secular republic and the Kingdom of God under the specific conditions of the enlightened consciousness of a person who thinks for herself. Thus the anthropological "fact": the self-un…
