Cannabinoid and nitric oxide signaling interplay in the modulation of hippocampal hyperexcitability: study on electrophysiological and behavioral mod…

2015

A growing bulk of evidence suggests that cannabinoid system plays a pivotal role in the control of hyperexcitability phenomena. Notwithstanding, the anticonvulsant action of cannabinoids has not been fully addressed, in particular the involvement of potential cellular neuromodulators, for instance nitric oxide. In the current study, we focused on two distinct rat models of temporal lobe epilepsy, the Maximal Dentate Activation and the pilocarpine-induced acute seizures, providing both electrophysiological and behavioral data on cannabinoid and nitrergic system interplay. We evaluated the antiepileptic effects of WIN 55,212-2, (R)-(+)-[2,3-dihydro-5-methyl-3-(4- morpholinylmethyl) pyrrolo[1,…

Evidences of cannabinoids-induced modulation of paroxysmal events in an experimental model of partial epilepsy in the rat.

2009

The anticonvulsant effect of cannabinoids (CB) has been shown to be mediated by the activation of the CB(1) receptor. This study evaluates the anticonvulsant activity of (R)-(+)-[2,3-dihydro-5-methyl-3-(4-morpholinylmethyl) pyrrolo[1,2,3-de]-1,4-benzoxazin-6-Yl]-1-naphthalenylmethanone (WIN55,212-2, CB agonist) alone or preceded by the administration of N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-iodophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (AM251, selective CB(1) antagonist) in an experimental in vivo model of complex partial seizures (maximal dentate gyrus activation - MDA) in the rat. WIN55,212-2 (21mgkg(-1)) exerted an anticonvulsant effect, significantly reduced by the pre-treatme…

Associations between personality traits and psychological well-being across time in middle adulthood

2013

Associations of personality traits with psychological well-being (PWB) were analyzed across ages 3350 as part of an ongoing Finnish longitudinal study (initial N = 369). Bivariate latent growth curve analyses indicated that a low initial level of neuroticism (.75) and high extraversion (.55) correlated strongly with a high level of PWB. Moreover, a high level of conscientiousness, openness, and agreeableness also correlated significantly with PWB. The change factor was significant only for openness: the higher the initial level of PWB, the higher the increase in openness from age 3350. In comparison with emotional well-being, indicated by general life satisfaction, the associations of the…

Integration of personality constructs: The role of traits and motivation in the willingness to exert effort in academic and social life domains

2014

There has been growing interest in recent years in exploring different types of personality constructs and the nature of inter-relationships between personality variables in predicting outcomes in different life domains. The present study explores how personality traits and autonomous goal motivation predict the willingness to invest effort in academic and social life domains. Using a sample of 4133 upper secondary school students in Germany, multilevel regression analyses yielded three main results. First, both personality traits and motivation were substantially related to the willingness to exert effort. Second, the mediation effect compared to the direct effect was relatively small. Thi…

Personal goals and personality traits among young adults: Genetic and environmental effects

2012

To assess genetic and environmental contributions to personal goals, 1279 twins aged 20-26 filled in Personal Project Analysis and NEO-FFI inventories. Personal goals relating to education, the respondent's own family, friends, property, travel and self showed primarily genetic and unique environmental effects, whereas goals related to parents and relatives showed both shared and unique environmental effects. The variation in goals related to health, work, hobbies and life philosophy was attributable to non-shared environmental effects. Openness to experience and personal goals related to family, education and property shared a significant amount of genetic influence. The same was true for …

On strong solutions of the differential equations modeling the steady flow of certain incompressible generalized Newtonian fluids

2007

In this paper we discuss a system of partial differential equations describing the steady flow of an incompressible fluid and prove the existence of a strong solution under suitable assumptions on the data. In the 2D-case this solution turns out to be of class C^{1,\alpha}.

Existence of dynamical low-rank approximations to parabolic problems

2021

The existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to dynamical low-rank evolution problems for parabolic partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions is shown, covering also non-diagonal diffusion in the elliptic part. The proof is based on a variational time-stepping scheme on the low-rank manifold. Moreover, this scheme is shown to be closely related to practical methods for computing such low-rank evolutions.
