Quality of Life in Pediatric Obesity in Latvia
2019
Abstract The aim of the retrospective case-control study was to determine if the health-related quality of life of overweight and obese children is lower than for children with optimal weight, using the KIDSCREEN-52 survey of health-related quality of life. The study examined differences in health-related quality of life assessments between children with optimal weight, and obese and over-weight children, as well as evaluated parental assessments of the quality of life of their children. In total, 200 children aged 8 to 18 years and their parents participated in the study. The results of the study showed that the total quality of life of obese (p < 0.0001) and overweight (p = 0.008) chil…
The Effect of Smoking on Long-term Gray Matter Atrophy and Clinical Disability in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis
2022
Background and ObjectivesThe relationship between smoking, long-term brain atrophy, and clinical disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is unclear. Here, we assessed long-term effects of smoking by evaluating MRI and clinical outcome measures after 10 years in smoking and nonsmoking patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS).MethodsWe included 85 treatment-naive patients with RRMS with recent inflammatory disease activity who participated in a 10-year follow-up visit after a multicenter clinical trial of 24 months. Smoking status was decided for each patient by 2 separate definitions: by serum cotinine levels measured regularly for the first 2 years of the follow-up (during th…
LisRK is required for optimal fitness ofListeria monocytogenesin soil
2020
ABSTRACTListeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for the disease listeriosis. It is ubiquitously found in the environment and soil is one of its natural habitats. Listeria monocytogenes is highly capable of coping with various stressful conditions. We hypothesized that stress-responsive two-component systems such as LisRK might contribute to the adaptation of L. monocytogenes to the soil environment. Indeed, investigations of the population dynamics of wild-type and mutant strains suggest an important role of LisRK for optimal fitness of L. monocytogenes in sterile soil. Results from non-sterile soil showed that the parental strain was capable of surviving longer than mut…
Las comunidades de Castilla (1520-1522) como conflicto intraurbano. Sus peculiaridades en el contexto político europeo
2021
Multifunctionality: Epistemic diversity and concept oriented research clusters
2008
International audience; This paper provides a mapping of the different uses of the word multifunctionality. To explore the diversity of meanings and interpretations, a comparative analysis was conducted through five national case studies in France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Switzerland. The analysis conducted at national level makes it possible to identify eight Concept Oriented Research Clusters (CORCs), based on a relative homogeneity in the research practices, in the research questions addressed, in the concepts used or discussed by scientists to lead their work and in the scientific disciplines, the stream of thought or possibly the epistemic community researchers belong to. Th…
Traumets rom : En analyse av Sofi Oksanens Utrenskning
2019
Masteroppgave nordisk språk og litteratur NO500 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 This thesis is an analysis of Sofi Oksanen’s novel Utrenskning [Purge] (2011), with a particular focus on what significance the various rooms convey in the narrative of trauma. Utrenskning relates stories of occupation, violence and abuse through three generations of Estonian women, and how this has led totrauma, fear, and damaged relationships. The study’s primary theory is that the novel interprets aspects of traumatic experiences through a spatial point of view. One distinctive feature of Utrenskning is that almost all of the action plays out within different rooms. The rooms have different functions for the nov…

Improving the Performance Metric of Wireless Sensor Networks with Clustering Markov Chain Model and Multilevel Fusion
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/783543 Open access The paper proposes a performance metric evaluation for a distributed detection wireless sensor network with respect to IEEE 802.15.4 standard. A distributed detection scheme is considered with presence of the fusion node and organized sensors into the clustering and non-clustering networks. Sensors are distributed in clusters uniformly and nonuniformly and network has multilevel fusion centers. Fusion centers act as heads of clusters for decision making based on majority-like received signal strength (RSS) with comparis…
