Between institutions and agency : How tensions shape the trajectory of governance
2020
The Europe 2020 strategy promoted the concept of smart specialization as the future for regional development strategies in Europe. The aim was to improve governance practices within European countries on sub-national levels. Nevertheless, not all regions in the European Union produced smart-specialization strategies within the year 2020. The failure to produce a strategy does not mean that actions were not taken. It is instead that actions were taken within different contexts that greatly affected how the implementation process played out. As such, smart specialization has presented opportunities to study the meaning of place. How the policy concept has been translated into action through e…
Organisational responses to regulatory pressure: A case study of a Norwegian Research University’s strategic compliance to GDPR
2020
Master's thesis in Innovative governance and public management (ME523) This thesis study seeks to test Oliver’s (1991) theory for prediction of Strategic Responses to Institutional Processes, against the case of initial responses taken by a Norwegian research university when faced with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of European Union (EU).This thesis explores how different parts of the same organisation respond to and manage institutional pressure. It uses a case study of a Norwegian research university’s response to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). An exploratory case study design frame was used to address the research question, and qualitative dat…
The formal organization structure of research innovation centers: a case-study in search of characteristics and an explanation
2020
Master's thesis in Innovative governance and public management (ME523) This study sheds light on research innovation centers in a Norwegian setting. Research innovation centers are a hybrid of research groups and innovation centers and belong to the higher education (HE) sector. The aim of this study is to identify the formal organization structure oftwo cases of research innovation centers and to find a suitable explanation through the analysis of its institutional pillars, according to W. R. Scott (2014). In a qualitative case-analysis it was found that the two cases share most of their characteristics in the formal organization structure. The main findings in both cases are a) a low leve…

Study of the f(2)(1270) , f(2)'(1525) , f(0)(1370) and f(0)(1710) in the J/psi radiative decays
2009
In this paper we present an approach to study the radiative decay modes of the J/psi into a photon and one of the tensor mesons f (2)(1270) , f' (2)(1525) , as well as the scalar ones f (0)(1370) and f (0)(1710) . Especially, we compare predictions that emerge from a scheme where the states appear dynamically in the solution of vector meson-vector meson scattering amplitudes to those from a (admittedly naive) quark model. We provide evidence that it might be possible to distinguish amongst the two scenarios, once improved data are available.
How social network sites and other online intermediaries increase exposure to news
2020
Research has prominently assumed that social media and web portals that aggregate news restrict the diversity of content that users are exposed to by tailoring news diets toward the users’ preferences. In our empirical test of this argument, we apply a random-effects within–between model to two large representative datasets of individual web browsing histories. This approach allows us to better encapsulate the effects of social media and other intermediaries on news exposure. We find strong evidence that intermediaries foster more varied online news diets. The results call into question fears about the vanishing potential for incidental news exposure in digital media environments.
Older rehabilitees’ life-course agency in Finnish gerontological rehabilitation
2015
Aims: This study investigates gerontological rehabilitation sessions of Finnish rehabilitees in the framework of life-course agency from the perspectives of temporal orientation and agency. Methods: The research data were obtained by non-participatory observation in 11 individual goal-setting sessions between 11 rehabilitees and their personal counsellors. The data were analysed in accordance with data-driven, qualitative content and narrative analysis, with an emphasis on the life-course agency approach. Results: Four temporal orientations of older rehabilitees were identified in the rehabilitation sessions: (i) timeless, (ii) past, (iii) present, and (iv) life course. For each temporal or…

Covering by discrete and closed discrete sets.
2008
Say that a cardinal number $\kappa$ is \emph{small} relative to the space $X$ if $\kappa <\Delta(X)$, where $\Delta(X)$ is the least cardinality of a non-empty open set in $X$. We prove that no Baire metric space can be covered by a small number of discrete sets, and give some generalizations. We show a ZFC example of a regular Baire $\sigma$-space and a consistent example of a normal Baire Moore space which can be covered by a small number of discrete sets. We finish with some remarks on linearly ordered spaces.
Deformation measurement of circular steel plates using projected fringes
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-013-5276-3 Fringe projection is a versatile method for mapping the surface topography. In this paper, it is used to measure the deformation of steel plates under static penetration. Here, the surface shape changes continuously. Therefore, it is important to minimize the registration time. To achieve this, we apply a method of fringe location with subpixel accuracy that requires only a single exposure for each registration. This is in contrast to phase shifting techniques that require at least three separate exp…
