How deprotonation changes molecular self-assembly – an AFM study in liquid environment

We study the influence of Alizarin Red S deprotonation on molecular self-assembly at the solid-liquid interface of the natural cleavage plane of calcite immersed in aqueous solution. To elucidate the adsorption details, we perform pH dependent high-resolution atomic force microscopy measurements. When Alizarin Red S is deposited onto calcite(10.4) in a liquid environment at an acidic pH of 5, weakly bound, ordered islands with a (3 x 3) superstructure are observed. A sharp structural transition is revealed when increasing the pH above 8. Above this pH, stable needle-like structures oriented along the [01.0] direction form on the surface. Isolated roundings and flattenings of submanifolds in Euclidean spaces

We introduce the concepts of rounding and flattening of a smooth map $g$ of an $m$-dimensional manifold $M$ to the euclidean space $\R^n$ with $m<n$, as those points in $M$ such that the image $g(M)$ has contact of type $\Sigma^{m,\dots,m}$ with a hypersphere or a hyperplane of $\R^n$, respectively. This includes several known special points such as vertices or flattenings of a curve in $\R^n$, umbilics of a surface in $\R^3$, or inflections of a surface in $\R^4$.

Unravelling the atomic structure of cross-linked (1 × 2) TiO2(110).

The cross-linked (1 × 2) reconstruction of TiO(2)(110) is a frequently observed phase reflecting the surface structure of titania in a significantly reduced state. Here we resolve the atomic scale structure of the cross-linked (1 × 2) phase with dynamic scanning force microscopy operated in the non-contact mode (NC-AFM). From an analysis of the atomic-scale contrast patterns of the titanium and oxygen sub-structures obtained by imaging the surface with AFM tips having different tip apex termination, we infer the hitherto most accurate model of the atomic structure of the cross-linked (1 × 2) phase. Growth, domain structure, and atomic adsorption sites of hBN on the Ni(111) surface

One of the most important functionalities of the atomically thin insulator hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is its ability to chemically and electronically decouple functional materials from highly reactive surfaces. It is therefore of utmost importance to uncover its structural properties on surfaces on an atomic and mesoscopic length scale. In this paper, we quantify the relative coverages of structurally different domains of a hBN layer on the Ni(111) surface using low-energy electron microscopy and the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. Constant angle surfaces in 4-dimensional Minkowski space

Abstract We first define a complex angle between two oriented spacelike planes in 4-dimensional Minkowski space, and then study the constant angle surfaces in that space, i.e. the oriented spacelike surfaces whose tangent planes form a constant complex angle with respect to a fixed spacelike plane. This notion is the natural Lorentzian analogue of the notion of constant angle surfaces in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. We prove that these surfaces have vanishing Gauss and normal curvatures, obtain representation formulas for the constant angle surfaces with regular Gauss maps and construct constant angle surfaces using PDE’s methods. Quantitative description of C-60 diffusion on an insulating surface

The diffusion of ${\text{C}}_{60}$ molecules on large, atomically flat terraces of the ${\text{CaF}}_{2}(111)$ surface is studied under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at various substrate temperatures below room temperature. The weak molecule-substrate interaction on this insulating surface makes a direct observation of hopping events difficult. Therefore, to determine a quantitative value of the diffusion barrier, we employ the so-called onset method. On dewetting dynamics of solid films of hydrogen isotopes and its influence on tritium [Beta] spectroscopy

The dewetting dynamics of solid films of hydrogen isotopes, quench-condensed on a graphite substrate, was measured at various temperatures below desorption by observing the stray light from the film. A schematic model describing the dewetting process by surface diffusion is presented, which agrees qualitatively with our data. The activation energies of different hydrogen isotopes for surface diffusion were determined. The time constant for dewetting of a quench-condensed T2 film at the working temperature of 1.86 K of the mainz neutrino mass experiment was extrapolated.

Topotecan triggers apoptosis in p53-deficient cells by forcing degradation of XIAP and survivin thereby activating caspase-3-mediated Bid cleavage.

The topoisomerase I inhibitor topotecan (TPT) is used in the therapy of different tumors including high-grade gliomas. We previously showed that TPT-induced apoptosis depends on p53 with p53 wild-type (wt) cells being more resistant because of p53-controlled degradation of topoisomerase I. Here, we show that p53-deficient (p53(-/-)) fibroblasts undergo excessive mitochondrial apoptosis featuring H2AX phosphorylation, Bcl-x(L) decline, cytochrome c release, caspase-9/-3/-2 activation, and cleavage of Bid.
