The influence of absorbed solar radiation by Saharan dust on hurricane genesis
2015
To date, the radiative impact of dust and the Sahar an air layer (SAL) on North Atlantic hurricane activity is not yet known. According to previous studies, dust stabilizes the atmosphere due to absorption of solar radiation but thus shifts convection to regions more conducive for hurricane genesis. Here we analyze differences in hurricane genesis and frequency from ensemble sensitivity simulations with radiatively active and inactive dust in the aerosol-climate model ECHAM6-HAM. We investigate dust burden and other hurricane-related variables and determine their influence on disturbances which develop into hurricanes (developing disturbances, DDs) and those which do not (nondeveloping dist…
Three viewpoints on the integral geometry of foliations
1999
We deal with three different problems of the multidimensional integral geometry of foliations. First, we establish asymptotic formulas for integrals of powers of curvature of foliations obtained by intersecting a foliation by affine planes. Then we prove an integral formula for surfaces of contact of an affine hyperplane with a foliation. Finally, we obtain a conformally invariant integral-geometric formula for a foliation in three-dimensional space.
Search for topological defect dark matter with a global network of optical magnetometers
2021
Ultralight bosons such as axion-like particles are viable candidates for dark matter. They can form stable, macroscopic field configurations in the form of topological defects that could concentrate the dark matter density into many distinct, compact spatial regions that are small compared with the Galaxy but much larger than the Earth. Here we report the results of the search for transient signals from the domain walls of axion-like particles by using the global network of optical magnetometers for exotic (GNOME) physics searches. We search the data, consisting of correlated measurements from optical atomic magnetometers located in laboratories all over the world, for patterns of signals p…
Characteristics of the diffuse astrophysical electron and Tau neutrino flux with six years of IceCube high energy cascade data
2020
We report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (∼90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of φastro=1.66-0.27+0.25 at E0=100 TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and wit…
Stochastic fluctuations of bosonic dark matter
2021
Numerous theories extending beyond the standard model of particle physics predict the existence of bosons that could constitute the dark matter (DM) permeating the universe. In the standard halo model (SHM) of galactic dark matter the velocity distribution of the bosonic DM field defines a characteristic coherence time $\tau_c$. Until recently, laboratory experiments searching for bosonic DM fields have been in the regime where the measurement time $T$ significantly exceeds $\tau_c$, so null results have been interpreted as constraints on the coupling of bosonic DM to standard model particles with a bosonic DM field amplitude $\Phi_0$ fixed by the average local DM density. However, motivate…
gg→HH : Combined uncertainties
2021
In this paper we discuss the combination of the usual renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties of Higgs-pair production via gluon fusion with the novel uncertainties originating from the scheme and scale choice of the virtual top mass. Moreover, we address the uncertainties related to the top-mass definition for different values of the trilinear Higgs coupling and their combination with the other uncertainties.
Complexity traits and synchrony of cryptocurrencies price dynamics
2021
AbstractIn this study, we characterized the dynamics and analyzed the degree of synchronization of the time series of daily closing prices and volumes in US$ of three cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin, over the period September 1,2015–March 31, 2020. Time series were first mapped into a complex network by the horizontal visibility algorithm in order to revel the structure of their temporal characters and dynamics. Then, the synchrony of the time series was investigated to determine the possibility that the cryptocurrencies under study co-bubble simultaneously. Findings reveal similar complex structures for the three virtual currencies in terms of number and internal composit…
Microscopic origin of the nonexponential dynamics in a glassy crystal
2003
The origin of the slow relaxation and of the dynamic heterogeneity is studied for an orientation-ally disordered crystal, orthocarborane, composed of quasi-icosahedrally shaped molecules. Multidimensional deuteron magnetic resonance reveals that large jump angles dominate their complex, anisotropic reorientational motion. It involves a sequence of small-angle tilts about locally preferred axes as well as symmetry adapted threefold jumps. The intrinsic dynamics of this glassy crystal is nonexponential and can be fully accounted for in terms of the tilt and jump motion.
Correlation of primary and secondary relaxations in a supercooled liquid
2006
The widespread assumption that primary and secondary relaxations in glass-forming materials are independent processes is scrutinized using spin-lattice relaxation weighted stimulated-echo spectroscopy. This nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique is simultaneously sensitive to the dynamics on well-separated time scales. For the deeply supercooled liquid sorbitol, which exhibits a strong secondary relaxation, the primary relaxation (that is observable using NMR) can be modified by suppressing the contributions of those subensembles which are characterized by relatively slow secondary relaxations. This is clear evidence for a correlation between primary and secondary relaxation times. In t…
