Sensorless Control of Induction Motors Using an Extended Kalman Filter and Linear Quadratic Tracking

2017

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 Conventional sensorless controls for induction motors require two PID regulators and precise gain turning. This thesis presents a sensorless control for induction motors using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and linear quadratic tracking (LQT). The proposed method requires only a single controller and no physical velocity sensor

Waste heat utilization for central heating and ventilation systems at Chassix Norway

2018

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 Chassix from south of Norway attempt to reduce their energy demand by sending waste heat to a Central Heating System, (CHS), named Case 1. The CHS heat the ventilation systems, space heat and water heating. The waste heat used is from the Sand Recycling Process, (SRP), and the Aluminum Cooling Process, (ACP). The ACP and a 600kW cooling tower are installed in May/June. Since the CHS is close to the ventilation systems using Battery Heat Exchanger, BHE, a possibility for utilizing the ventilation systems as a cooling tower, named Case 2. Case 2 is an attempt to reduce investment cost by replacing investment cost for installin…

Planning of Residential Microgrid Community with Technical and Economic Analysis

2018

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 Establishment of microgrid communities in Norway can contribute to solve many upgrading challenges of the existing grid. Today's grid are in many areas not suited to handle both bidirec- tional power ow and the increasing consumption from the consumers. With great progress in the development of PV systems, wind turbines and other DG units, is it necessary to establish sustainable solutions to handle the impact this components has on the grid. Since its easier to integrate DG units in microgrids, than in traditional distribution networks, can microgrid be a sustainable solution that is bene cial for both consumers and distrib…

Modelling and simulation of BIPV installations in Norway

2018

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 In this thesis, three BIPV-installations has been simulated, the simulated results of each system have been compared to actual production for the real system. The parameters which are assessed in this thesis are production, performance ratio and di erent system losses. The BIPV-installations which are simulated, are Skarpnes, Solsmaragden and Brynseng located in Arendal, Drammen and Oslo respectively. The simulations are done by obtaining weather data, such as global horizontal irradiance and temperature. The weather data was retrieved in di erent ways. PVsyst was used to generate synthetic data, real measured data on site w…

Performance Degradation and Failure Analysis of 7 Years (of) Field Exposed Photovoltaic System in Southern Norway

2018

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 This thesis covers an analysis of performance degradation and failure detection of thin-film (Sharp) and m-Si (REC and Suntech) PV modules located at Kjøita in the south of Norway. The analysis consists of performance evaluation, visual inspection, IR imaging and I–V curve measurements. Performance ratios were calculated based on DC data from the past six years. Detection of failures and determination of degradation rates was based on the proposed inspection methods. The results have been analysed to obtain an in-situ overview of the system states concerning degradation and failures. The complementarity between the methods i…

Demand side management of electric water heater with a photovoltaic system

2018

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 This thesis presents the development of a load controller, which can be used to store self- produced electricity as hot water in a regular electrical water tank. The electricity market today facing challenges towards grid utilisation and consumption during peak hours. To prevent massive investment for the grid operators for upgrading the grid to handle peak hours, a better utilisation is necessary. An expected increase in electricity prices together with a reduction of cost for renewable energy production opens for new solutions to reduce the grid electricity consumption. The problem statement was to design a controller for …

2019

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2019 Photovoltaicsystems for residential household may bea large part of energy production in the future. The electric grid is facing challenges, andphotovoltaicsystems can contribute in the reduction of electricgrid load by adjustingthe orientation of the photovoltaicpanels. This report investigatestheeffects orientation has on a photovoltaic system, considering;time of dayproduction, operating conditionsand geographical location. Several simulations have been done where these factors wereexanimated. The results presented in this report wereinducedby the use of asimulation toolcalled PVsyst. In this program, a photovoltaic system …

Battery systems for commercial buildings with solar power : Control and operation strategies

2019

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2019 In order to reach the climate targets, a sustainable energy system based on renewable energy generationis required. Battery storage systems are considered part of the solution, aselectricity generationfrom renewable energy sources suchas wind and solardoes not match the energy consumption at all times. This thesis investigates control and operation of battery storage systems for commercial buildings with and without photovoltaicinstallations. It was found in the literaturereviewthat the correct size of a battery system is importantin order to have an optimal storage solution and avoid unnecessary costs. Therefore,a photovolta…

Measurements and analysis of spectral irradiance distributions in southern Norway

2018

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2018 The spectral response of the photovoltaic (PV) cell depends on which technology that is used and the outdoor performance of PV modules depends on solar irradiation, module temperature, and solar spectrum. Therefore, di erent locations should give di erent PV performance outcome. This thesis investigates local spectral irradiance measurements, which will be analysed to document irradiance conditions, and give an indication of which PV technology to prefer in Southern Norway. A spectroradiometer is calibrated for use to measure the spectral irradiance at the University of Agder in Grimstad. From February to April in 2018, spec…
