Reliable Underlay Device-to-Device Communications on Multiple Channels

2019

Device-to-device (D2D) communications provide a substantial increase in spectrum usage and efficiency by allowing nearby users to communicate directly without passing their packets through the base station (BS). In previous works, proper channel assignment and power allocation algorithms for sharing of channels between cellular users and D2D pairs, usually require exact knowledge of the channel-state-information (CSI). However, due to the non-stationary wireless environment and the need to limit the communication and computation overheads, obtaining perfect CSI in the D2D communication scenario is generally not possible. In this work, we propose a joint channel assignment and power allocati…

Real Models are Really on M0 - Or How to Make Programmers Use Modeling

2020

This paper discusses the term ’model’ and the role of the level M0 in the four-layer metamodeling architecture of MOF/OMG. It illustrates the failures of the OMG MOF standard and how a model is an abstraction, not a description. We apply two simple approaches: (1) observing the use of models (of real or planned systems) in system development, including prototyping, simulations, and models in general, and (2) comparing modeling with programming. These approaches lead to the conclusion that models should be placed on M0, while UML models are model descriptions. This conclusion leads to a better understanding of InstanceSpecification for description of snapshots, and of metamodeling applied to…

Parameter optimization for amplify-and-forward relaying systems with pilot symbol assisted modulation scheme

2009

Article published in the journal:Wireless Sensor Network Also available from publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/wsn.2009.11003 Cooperative diversity is a promising technology for future wireless networks. In this paper, we consider a cooperative communication system operating in an amplify-and-forward (AF) mode with a pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) scheme. It is assumed that a linear minimum mean square estimator (LMMSE) is used for the channel estimation at the receiver. A simple and easy-to-evaluate asymptotical upper bound (AUB) of the symbol-error-rate (SER) is derived for uncoded AF cooperative communication systems with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. …

An Integrated Wireless Communication Architecture for Maritime Sector

2011

Published version of a chapter in the book: Multiple Access Communications. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-23795-9_17 The rapid evolution of terrestrial wireless systems has brought mobile users more and more desired communication services. Maritime customers are asking for the same, such as the concepts of “Broadband at Sea” and “Maritime Internet”. Quite a lot of research work has focused on the development of new and better maritime communication technologies, but less attention has been paid on interworking of multiple maritime wireless networks or on satisfying service provisioning. To address this, an integrated wireless Communication Architec…

Dynamic Flow-Adaptive Spectrum Leasing with Channel Aggregation in Cognitive Radio Networks.

2020

Cognitive radio networks (CRNs), which allow secondary users (SUs) to dynamically access a network without affecting the primary users (PUs), have been widely regarded as an effective approach to mitigate the shortage of spectrum resources and the inefficiency of spectrum utilization. However, the SUs suffer from frequent spectrum handoffs and transmission limitations. In this paper, considering the quality of service (QoS) requirements of PUs and SUs, we propose a novel dynamic flow-adaptive spectrum leasing with channel aggregation. Specifically, we design an adaptive leasing algorithm, which adaptively adjusts the portion of leased channels based on the number of ongoing and buffered PU …

A dynamic parallel-rendezvous MAC mechanism in multi-rate cognitive radio networks: Mechanism design and performance evaluation

2009

Published version of an article published in the journal:Journal of Communications, © Academy Publisher Also available from publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.4304/jcm.4.10.752-765 Parallel rendezvous multi-channel MAC mechanisms are regarded as an efficient method for media access control in cognitive radio networks since they do not need a control channel and use only one transceiver. However, existing parallel rendezvous MAC mechanisms assume that all channels have the same maximum capacity and channel availability for secondary users. In this paper, we propose a dynamic parallel rendezvous multi-channel MAC mechanism for synchronized multi-rate cognitive radio networks in which secondary u…

Energy Efficiency inWireless Sensor Networks: Transmission Protocols and Performance Evaluation

2016

Doktorgradsavhandling, Fakultet for teknologi og realfag, Universitetet i Agder, 2016 Energy efficiency is one of the major goals for achieving green wireless communications. The recent growth in ubiquitous wireless connections and multimedia applications demands higher energy efficiency for wireless communications. As a part of this picture, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) need to be more energy efficient since the battery capacity of nodes in such networks is limited in the absence of energy harvesting sources. In general, an energy efficient protocol should perform as few as possible operations when delivering user information successfully across the network. Energy efficient data transm…
