Search for multiwavelength emission from the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1836-2354A in the globular cluster M22
2019
We present a multi-band search for X-ray, optical and $\gamma$-ray emission of the radio binary millisecond pulsar J1836-2354A, hosted in the globular cluster M22. X-ray emission is significantly detected in two Chandra observations, performed in 2005 and 2014, at a luminosity of $\sim$2-3$\times$10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$, in the 0.5-8 keV energy range. The radio and the X-ray source positions are found consistent within 1$\sigma$ error box. No detection is found in archival XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observations, compatible with the Chandra flux level. The low statistics prevents us to assess if the X-ray source varied between the two observations. The X-ray spectrum is consistent with a power…
Early perception of phrasal prosody and its role in syntactic and lexical acquisition
2018
Chapter: 2, pp. 17-35; International audience; This chapter will review empirical findings on the perception of phrasal prosody in very young infants, and how it develops in first language acquisition. The ability to process phrasal prosody impacts learning of important aspects of language, specifically word segmentation and syntactic parsing. We will see that infants are able to perceive crucial aspects of phrasal prosody before the end of their first year of life, and that a few months later they are able to exploit the prosodic structure of an utterance to constrain its syntactic analysis, and therefore, to infer the meaning of unknown words.
ADVANCED STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF LOCAL BUBBLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS IN 2D GAS FLUIDIZED BEDS
2009
The principal difficulty in analysing fluidization quality and bubble dynamics is related to the possibility of measuring or predicting the physical and geometrical properties of gas bubbles rising in a granular medium. Even the development of detailed experimental correlations gives poor results, being necessary a fully statistical approach. On the above basis, the present work focuses on the statistical analysis of the behaviour of a 2-D fluidized bed operating under bubbling and slugging conditions, performing measurements of Local Bubble Size Distributions (BSD) along the bed. The analysis allowed to observe a characteristic bimodal shape of BSDs for different particles dimension and fl…
Deploying Genome Editing Tools for Dissecting the Biology of Nut Trees
2019
Walnuts are among the most important nut crops grown in temperate regions of the world. Commercial production in California, and increasingly worldwide, relies on only few clonally grafted scion genotypes, particularly “Chandler,” and more recently clonally propagated disease-resistant rootstocks. Diseases, nematodes, insect pests, abiotic stresses, and other nutritional and environmental factors, can reduce walnut productivity and quality, affecting grower profitability. The California Walnut Breeding Program at UC Davis has developed and released scion cultivars and rootstocks to help address some of these problems. Sequencing of the walnut genome is expected to speed walnut breeding by f…
Velázquez en el entorno de Pacheco: las primeras obras
1991
A PESAR DE LA ABUNDANTE BIBLIOGRAFIA SOBRE VELAZQUEZ, LAS OBRAS DE SU PRIMER PERIODO HAN SIDO POCO ESTUDIADAS. EN ESTA ETAPA VELAZQUEÑA ES MUY IMPORTANTE LA INFLUENCIA DE SU SUEGRO FRANCISCO PACHECO. TENIENDO EN CUENTA EL AMBIENTE CULTURAL Y RELIGIOSO EN QUE SE PRODUJERON OBRAS COMO "VIEJA FRIENDO HUEVOS" O "CRISTO EN CASA DE MARTA Y MARIA" PUEDEN INTERPRETARSE RESPECTIVAMENTE COMO UNA ALEGORIA DEL MATRIMONIO Y COMO UNA ALUSION A LA VIRGEN MARIA COMO MODELO DE VIDA ACTIVA Y CONTEMPLATIVA. ESTAS INTERPRETACIONES TIENEN EN CUENTA FUNDAMENTALMENTE LAS FUENTES LITERARIAS MANEJADAS POR EL SUEGRO DEL PINTOR, FRANCISCO PACHECO, QUE VELAZQUEZ MUY PROBABLEMENTE CONOCIERA. (A.B.C./ L.A.G.)

TPEN: A Triple-foil differential Plunger for lifetime measurements of excited states in Exotic Nuclei
2019
Abstract A Triple-foil differential Plunger for Exotic Nuclei (TPEN) has been developed to measure the lifetimes of excited states in nuclei with small production cross-sections. TPEN utilises one target foil and two degrader foils to make differential lifetime measurements: directly determining the decay function and its derivative at a single plunger distance setting. The direct measurement of the decay function and its derivative removes the requirement to measure γ -ray intensities at several target-to-degrader distances, thereby reducing the beam-time required relative to a conventional plunger with a single-degrader foil. This paper describes the commissioning of TPEN in the lifetime …
Reglamentowana odwilż. Obóz „zamkowy” na emigracji wobec wydarzeń w Polsce i bloku komunistycznym w 1956 roku
2016
The article presents the position of “the Castle” on emigration (the President, government and the Council of the Republic of Poland) towards the events in Poland and the Eastern Bloc in 1956. The politicians and publicists of “the Castle”, observing some changes in the country, did not expect that they would lead to basic changes. The opinion prevailed that Poland was not an independent state and that the Soviet occupation still persisted. Propagating maximum demands (independence, restoration of the pre-war border in the east), they did not have much hope in an evolutionary course of changes. They opted for a deposition, and not a liberalisation of the communist system in Poland and the r…
Case Studies of Macro-and Microplastics Pollution in Coastal Waters and Rivers: Is There a Solution With New Removal Technologies and Policy Actions?.
2020
This opinion paper on microplastics pollution has selected different aspects and case studies of micro and macro-plastic litter pollution in coastal waters, and rivers. We point out a discussion on this topic and ask ourselves if there is a solution to the global problem by developing new microplastics removal technologies as well as policy actions. The first two case studies are related with macroplastics marine litter in beaches, a third report describes a new simple sampling device for microplastics in coastal and nearshore areas, five case study assess microplastics pollution in worldwide coastal environments, sediments and catchments (India, Mexico, Australia, Europe and the Nordic Sea…
Composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid chemically cross-linked with alpha,beta-polyaspartylhydrazide.
2007
In this paper, new composite nanoparticles based on hyaluronic acid (HA) chemically cross-linked with alpha, beta polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) were prepared by the use of a reversed-phase microemulsion technique. HA-PAHy nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, confirming the occurrence of the chemical cross-linking, dimensional analysis, and transmission electron micrography, showing a sub-micrometer size and spherical shape. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated the presence of HA on the nanoparticle surface. A remarkable affinity of the obtained nanoparticles toward aqueous media that simulate some biological fluids was found. Stability studies showed the absence of chem…
