Summary.  Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects approximately 3% of the world population. The chronicity of hepatitis C seems to depend on the level of genetic variability. Genetic variability in hepatitis C virus and its role in antiviral treatment response

Summary.  Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health problem worldwide, infecting an estimated 170 million people. The high genetic variability of HCV contributes to the chronicity of hepatitis C. Here, we report results from a large-scale sequence analysis of 67 patients infected with HCV genotype 1, 23 with subtype 1a and 44 with subtype 1b. Inhibition of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis by a synthetic glycine-alanine repeat peptide that mimics an inhibitory viral sequence.

AbstractThe glycine–alanine repeat (GAr) of the Epstein–Barr virus nuclear antigen-1 is a cis-acting transferable element that inhibits ubiquitin/proteasome-dependent proteolysis in vitro and in vivo. We have here examined the effect of a synthetic 20-mer GAr oligopeptide on the degradation of iodinated or biotin labeled lysozyme in a rabbit reticulocyte lysates in vitro assay. Micromolar concentrations of the GA-20 peptide inhibited the hydrolysis of lysozyme without significant effect on ubiquitination. Addition of the peptide did not inhibit the hydrolysis of fluorogenic substrate by purified proteasomes and did not affect the ubiquitination of lysozyme. An excess of the peptide failed t…

Analytical models of magnetised, geometrically thick discs are relevant to understand the physical conditions of plasma around compact objects and to explore its emitting properties. Partial stellar tidal disruption events and their rates

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) of stars operated by massive black holes (MBHs) will be detected in thousands by upcoming facilities such as the Vera Rubin Observatory. In this work, we assess the rates of standard total TDEs, destroying the entire star, and partial TDEs, in which a stellar remnant survives the interaction, by solving 1-D Fokker-Planck equations. Our rate estimates are based on a novel definition of the loss cone whose size is commensurate to the largest radius at which partial disruptions can occur, as motivated by relativistic hydrodynamical simulations.
