The realization of autonomous, aircraft-based, real-time aerosol mass spectrometry in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere

2022

Abstract. We report on the developments that enabled the field deployment of a fully-automated aerosol mass spectrometer, specially designed for high-altitude measurements on unpressurised aircraft. The merits of the two main categories of real-time aerosol mass spectrometry, i.e. (a) single particle laser desorption and ionization, and (b) continuous thermal desorption / electron impact ionization of aerosols, have been integrated into one compact apparatus with the aim to perform in-situ real-time analysis of aerosol chemical composition. The demonstrated instrument, named ERICA (European Research council Instrument for the Chemical composition of Aerosols), operated successfully aboard t…

BRAFV600E MUTATION, TISSUE INHIBITOR OF METALLOPROTEINASE-1 UPREGULATION AND NF-KB ACTIVATION: CLOSING THE LOOP ON THE PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER TRILO…

2011

BRAFV600E is the most common mutation in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1) and Nuclear Factor (NF)-kB have been shown to play an important role in thyroid cancer. Our aim was to evaluate whether an interplay among these three factors exerts a functional role in PTCs. 56 PTC specimens were analyzed for BRAFV600E mutation, TIMP-1 expression and NF-kB activation by real-time allele-specific amplification, realtime quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) and electroforetic mobility shift assay (EMSA), respectively. We show that BRAFV600E mutation occurs selectively in PTC nodules and determines up-regulation of TIMP-1 and hyperactivation of NF-kB. In addition…

Battery characterization via eddy-current imaging with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

2021

Sensitive and accurate diagnostic technologies with magnetic sensors are of great importance for identifying and localizing defects of rechargeable solid batteries in a noninvasive detection. We demonstrate a microwave-free AC magnetometry method with negatively charged NV centers in diamond based on a cross-relaxation feature between NV centers and individual substitutional nitrogen (P1) centers occurring at 51.2 mT. We apply the technique to non-destructive solid-state battery imaging. By detecting the eddy-current-induced magnetic field of the battery, we distinguish a defect on the external electrode and identify structural anomalies within the battery body. The achieved spatial resolut…

Comparison between rectal and body surface temperature in dogs by the calibrated infrared thermometer

2020

Highlights • Dogs poorly tolerate rectal temperature measurements with a contact thermometer. • Existing alternative approaches used uncalibrated infrared thermometers. • Gum and inguinal temperature are correlated moderately to rectal temperature. • Hyperthermia was detected with sensitivity and specificity up to 90.0% and 78.6%. • Future studies should include a calibrated thermometer and control external factors.

Fascioliasis in Llama, Lama glama, in Andean Endemic Areas: Experimental Transmission Capacity by the High Altitude Snail Vector Galba truncatula and…

2021

Simple Summary The infection by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica in South American camelids, mainly llamas and alpacas, has been the focus of many studies. However, their capacity to participate in the transmission of the disease and their potential reservoir role in human or animal endemic areas have never been studied. Therefore, all development stages of an isolate from Argentine llama of the high Andean plateau have been experimentally investigated, from egg embryogenesis to metacercarial infectivity, by using the vector snail Galba truncatula from the high altitude Bolivian Altiplano human hyperendemic area. Although eggs shed by llamas may successfully develop until the adult stage i…

Sheep and Cattle Reservoirs in the Highest Human Fascioliasis Hyperendemic Area: Experimental Transmission Capacity, Field Epidemiology, and Control …

2020

The Northern Bolivian Altiplano is the human fascioliasis hyperendemic area where the highest prevalences and intensities of infection by Fasciola hepatica in humans have been reported. Four animal species are the reservoir species for F. hepatica in this area, namely, sheep, cattle, pigs, and donkeys. Livestock for the Aymara inhabitants is crucial because vegetable cultures are not viable due to the inhospitality of the very high altitude of 3,820–4,100 m. A One Health initiative has been implemented in this area in recent years, as the first such control action in a human endemic area ever. Among the different control axes included, special focus is devoted to the two main reservoirs she…

Effect of operating conditions and feedstock composition on the properties of manganese oxide or quartz charcoal pellets for the use in ferroalloy in…

2020

peer-reviewed The full text of this article will not be available until the embargo expires on the 26/12/2021 This study investigates the effect of heat treatment temperature on the properties of charcoal composite pellets used for the reduction of ferroalloys. The heavy fraction of biooil was used as a binder for the charcoal ore pellet preparation. The effect of heat treatment temperature on the pellet shrinkage was related to the degree of reduction which varied with feedstock and ore composition. The results showed that the size and shape of the charcoal pellets were not affected by the biooil devolatilization. Manganese charcoal pellets showed higher electrical resistance during pyroly…
