Metabolic detoxification: implications for thresholds.

2000

The fact that chemical carcinogenesis involves single, isolated, essentially irreversible molecular events as discrete steps, several of which must occur in a row to finally culminate in the development of a malignancy, rather suggests that an absolute threshold for chemical carcinogens may not exist. However, practical thresholds may exist due to saturable pathways involved in the metabolic processing, especially in the metabolic inactivation, of such compounds. An important example for such a pathway is the enzymatic hydrolysis of epoxides via epoxide hydrolases, a group of enzymes for which the catalytic mechanism has recently been established. These enzymes convert their substrates via…

Effects of stress on chewing and food intake in patients with anorexia nervosa

2021

OBJECTIVE The present study investigates the impact of psychosocial stress on chewing and eating behavior in patients with anorexia nervosa (PAN ). METHOD The eating and chewing behavior of PAN were examined in a standardized setting by means of a chewing sensor. These procedures encompassed n = 19 PAN , age, and gender matched to n = 19 healthy controls (HC). Food intake and chewing frequency were assessed in two experimental conditions: rest versus stress (via Trier Social Stress Test). To verify stress induction, two appraisal scales were employed. In addition, chronic stress, psychological distress and eating disorder symptoms were assessed. RESULTS In terms of food intake and chewing f…

Consensus statement on the problem of terminology in psychological interventions using the internet or digital components

2020

Since the emergence of psychological interventions delivered via the Internet they have differed in numerous ways. The wealth of formats, methods, and technological solutions has led to increased availability and cost-effectiveness of clinical care, however, it has simultaneously generated a multitude of terms. With this paper, we first aim to establish whether a terminology issue exists in the field of Internet-delivered psychological interventions. If so, we aim to determine its implications for research, education, and practice. Furthermore, we intend to discuss solutions to mitigate the problem; in particular, we propose the concept of a common glossary. We invited 23 experts in the fie…

An Internet based intervention for improving resilience and coping strategies in university students: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

2019

Background The literature shows a high prevalence of depression and anxiety in young people. The university represents a change in the lives of students, and is considered a stress factor. Therefore, it is particularly relevant to develop interventions specifically addressed to students and foster supportive environments and resilient communities. As students are “digital natives”, online interventions offer several potential advantages in doing this. This study aims to develop and evaluate the efficacy of an Internet-based intervention (CORE: Cultivating our Resilience), based on the Ryff model of well-being, to promote resilience and coping skills, decrease symptoms of depression and anxi…

Critical appraisal of tubular putative eumetazoans from the Ediacaran Weng'an Doushantuo biota

2015

Molecular clock analyses estimate that crown-group animals began diversifying hundreds of millions of years before the start of the Cambrian period. However, the fossil record has not yielded unequivocal evidence for animals during this interval. Some of the most promising candidates for Precambrian animals occur in the Weng'an biota of South China, including a suite of tubular fossils assigned to Sinocyclocyclicus, Ramitubus, Crassitubus and Quadratitubus, that have been interpreted as soft-bodied eumetazoans comparable to tabulate corals. Here, we present new insights into the anatomy, original composition and phylogenetic affinities of these taxa based on data from synchrotron radiation …

Changes of coagulation parameters during high altitude expedition

2010

Data on changes of haemostatic parameters at altitudes above 5000 m are very limited. So far it is unknown, whether altered coagulation could contribute to the development of acute mountain sickness.Thirty four healthy mountaineers were randomised to two acclimatisation protocols and undertook an expedition on Muztagh Ata (7549 m) in China. Tests were performed at five altitudes up to 6865 m. Haemostatic parameters, such as PT, aPTT, D-Dimer, APC-Resistance (APCR), von Willebrand Factor activity (RCo), ADAMTS-13C-Natriuretic Peptide (CNP) were assessed together with Lake Louise AMS score.D-Dimer significantly increased with increasing altitude (median 0.62 to 0.81 mcg/L, p0.0001). During as…

How to diagnose and treat abdominal compartment syndrome after endovascular and open repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms

2014

Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are frequently encountered in patients treated for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (rAAA) and carry a high morbidity and mortality risk. Despite these facts, IAH/ACS are still overlooked by many physicians, timely diagnosis is missed and treatment often inadequate. All staff involved in the treatment of rAAA should be aware of the risk factors predicting IAH/ACS, the profound implications and derangements on all organ systems, the clinical presentation, the appropriate measurement of intra-abdominal pressure to detect IAH/ACS and the current treatment options for these detrimental syndromes. This comprehensive r…

Guidelines for the Direct Detection ofAnaplasmaspp. in Diagnosis and Epidemiological Studies

2017

The genus Anaplasma (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) comprises obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria that are mainly transmitted by ticks, and currently includes six species: Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma centrale, Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma platys, and Anaplasma ovis. These have long been known as etiological agents of veterinary diseases that affect domestic and wild animals worldwide. A zoonotic role has been recognized for A. phagocytophilum, but other species can also be pathogenic for humans. Anaplasma infections are usually challenging to diagnose, clinically presenting with nonspecific symptoms that vary greatly depending on the agent involved, th…
