This article discusses the three Finnish city names Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa, and the urban discourses that surround them. The study reveals patterns of socio-spatial differentiation by examining what meanings people attach to these capital region cities and investigating how these meanings are expressed in online discourses. Using the methodological approach of corpus-assisted onomastics (CAO), this study incorporates onomastics, geographical information systems (GIS), and corpus linguistics. Artikkelissani tarkastelen Suomi24-keskustelupalstan homouteen ja heterouteen liittyviä toistuvia diskursseja. Analyysi on toteutettu korpusavusteisena diskurssintutkimuksena (CADS), jossa suureen dataan perustuva tilastollinen avainsana-analyysi nostaa esiin suomalaisen yhteiskunnan sosiaalisesti jaetut diskurssit. Tulokset yhtäältä tukevat aiempia media-analyyseissä tehtyjä havaintoja voimakkaista affekteista ja vihapuheesta sekä homoseksuaalisuuden politisoitumisesta ja uskonnollistumisesta. Why are we so afraid of making mistakes? Students in language classes, speakers of non-standard varieties, professionals working abroad – we all share the anxiety of dropping the ball. Suomessa asuu tällä hetkellä eri arvioiden mukaan 90--130 kirjailijaa, joiden äidinkieli on jokin muu kuin suomi, ruotsi tai saame. Artikkeli luo kuvaa siitä, keitä nämä kirjailijat ovat ja millaisista lähtökohdista he työtään tekevät. Heistä puhutaan usein kuin kyse olisi yhtenäisestä joukosta; artikkeli nostaa esiin esimerkkikirjailijoita kolmesta erilaisesta kirjailijatyypistä, jotka muodostavat omat marginaalin marginaalinsa. Se kuvaa myös niitä haasteita, joita äidinkieleltään muut kuin valtakieliset kirjailijat kohtaavat pyrkiessään suomalaiselle kirjallisuuden kentälle.
Commenting on poverty online : A corpus-assisted discourse study of the Suomi24 forum

This paper brings new insight to poverty and social exclusion through an analysis of how poverty-related issues are commented on in the largest online discussion forum in Finland: Suomi24 (‘Finland24’). For data, we use 32,407 posts published in the forum in 2014 that contain the word köyhä (‘poor’) or a predefined semantically similar word. We apply the Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) method, which combines quantitative methods and qualitative discourse analysis. This methodological solution allows us to analyse both large-scale tendencies and detailed expressions and nuances on how poverty is discussed. Digital Games as a Source of English Vocabulary for Finnish Writers

The material for this paper comes from Finnish people who wrote about their experiences of the music of digital games. We collected 184 texts, all but one written in Finnish. There is relatively little code-switching into English at the clause level, but the vocabulary of the texts is influenced by English on a continuum from clearly English words such as comfy to established loanwords such as uniikki (‘unique’). We will consider how the influence of the English language used both in the games and in discussions about them characterizes the vocabulary of these texts and how the English language enables the authors to enter the game world. peerReviewed
