The Stabilizing Role of Government Size

2007

This paper presents an analysis of how alternative models of the business cycle can replicate the stylized fact that large governments are associated with less volatile economies. Our analysis shows that adding nominal rigidities and costs of capital adjustment to an otherwise standard RBC model can generate a negative correlation between government size and the volatility of output. However, in the model, we find that the stabilizing effect is only due to a composition effect and it is not present when we look at the volatility of private output. Given that empirically we also observe a negative correlation between government size and the volatility of consumption, we modify the model by i…

OLTRE IL MODELLO MERCANTILE? VELLEITA` E INETTITUDINE DELL’ENNESIMA RIFORMA DELLA CORRUZIONE PRIVATA

2018

The article deals with the most significant and problematic aspects of the umpteenth reform of private corruption, introduced with the legislative decree n. 38/2017. There are three main issues at stake. First, the instruction, in the text of art. 2635 of the civil code (c.c.), of the (formally) unilateral conducts of offering and soliciting as forms of consummated private corruption. Such a choice contrasts with the model, traditionally adopted by the Italian legislator, of criminalising corrupting conducts as bilateral behaviours and risks to introduce elements of unreasonableness in the overall regulation of the phenomenon. Related to this, the second aspect considered here is the introd…

New ways of looking into handwritten miscellanies of the seventeenth century: the case of “Spes Altera”

2020

A large number of copies of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 2 circulated in handwritten miscellanies from the second quarter of the Seventeenth Century. Eleven of those copies have significant variant readings that have led critics to put forward different hypotheses regarding their nature and quality. Most critics, taking into account stylometric analyses, have regarded them as early drafts of Shakespeare’s printed version, and have agreed on their poor quality.By paying due attention to the text’s context of production and reception, we have reached a different conclusion regarding both the nature and quality of the handwritten versions of Sonnet 2. In our view, they are the product of a conscious r…

'The sisters did her every imaginable injury': Power and violence in Cinderella

2012

The main aim of this article is to discuss the results achieved after investigating the presence of violence in the Grimm brothers’ Cinderella with the intention of finding out what kind of processes predominate in this tale and whether they can be related to violent actions. The analysis involved firstly, a study of the frequency and concordances of some words belonging to the semantic field ‘violence’, surveying in detail the context in which they appear and secondly, the analysis of transitivity processes. The method proved to be a good strategy to check whether each character’s identity and social position (power) were somehow related to the infliction of violence w…
