Effects of spin-orbit interaction on nuclear response and neutrino mean free path
2006
PTH; The effects of the spin-orbit component of the particle-hole interaction on nuclear response functions and neutrino mean free path are examined. A complete treatment of the full Skyrme interaction in the case of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter is given. Numerical results for neutron matter are discussed. It is shown that the effects of the spin-orbit interaction remain small, even at momentum transfer larger than the Fermi momentum. The neutrino mean free paths are marginally affected.
Top quark mass measurement in the lepton plus jets channel using a modified matrix element method
2008
We report a measurement of the top quark mass, m(t), obtained from p(p)over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using the CDF II detector. We analyze a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb(-1). We select events with an electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and exactly four high-energy jets in the central region of the detector, at least one of which is tagged as coming from a b quark. We calculate a signal likelihood using a matrix element integration method, where the matrix element is modified by using effective propagators to take into account assumptions on event kinematics. Our event likelihood is a function of m(t) and a parame…
Search for right-handed W bosons in top quark decay
2005
We present a measurement of the fraction f+ of right-handed W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of $t\bar{t}$ events in the lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 230pb^-1, collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the kinematics of the $t\bar{t}$ and decay products, which allows for the measurement of the leptonic decay angle $\theta^*$ for each event. By comparing the $\cos\theta^*$ distribution from the data with those for the expected background and signal for various values of f+, we find f+=0.00+-0.13(stat)+-0.07(syst). This …
Nuclear response functions in homogeneous matter with finite range effective interactions
2005
The question of nuclear response functions in a homogeneous medium is examined. A general method for calculating response functions in the random phase approximation (RPA) with exchange is presented. The method is applicable for finite-range nuclear interactions. Examples are shown in the case of symmetric nuclear matter described by a Gogny interaction. It is found that the convergence of the results with respect to the multipole truncation is quite fast. Various approximation schemes such as the Landau approximation, or the Landau approximation for the exchange terms only, are discussed in comparison with the exact results.
Numerical analysis of the Oseen-type Peterlin viscoelastic model by the stabilized Lagrange-Galerkin method, Part II: A linear scheme
2017
This is the second part of our error analysis of the stabilized Lagrange-Galerkin scheme applied to the Oseen-type Peterlin viscoelastic model. Our scheme is a combination of the method of characteristics and Brezzi-Pitk\"aranta's stabilization method for the conforming linear elements, which leads to an efficient computation with a small number of degrees of freedom especially in three space dimensions. In this paper, Part II, we apply a semi-implicit time discretization which yields the linear scheme. We concentrate on the diffusive viscoelastic model, i.e. in the constitutive equation for time evolution of the conformation tensor a diffusive effect is included. Under mild stability condi…
Miksi työmarkkinoiden ja kielikoulutuksen tarpeet eivät kohtaa?
2012
Luopumalla eri kielten lokeroajattelusta ja omaksumalla uudenlainen näkemys kielten opiskeluun tuotettaisiin suurempaa kielitaitohyötyä niin työelämässä kuin sen ulkopuolellakin. Language for Jobs työryhmä on etsinyt ratkaisuja kielitaitotarpeiden ja kielikoulutuksen tarjonnan kohtaamisen ongelmiin.
Projekteilla parempaa laatua yliopistoihin?
2005
Markkinatalousvetoisen kulttuurin soveltaminen yliopistoihin ei ole ongelmatonta. Erilaiset laadun kohottamisen nimissä tehtävät kehittämishankkeet ilmentävät markkinataloustumista keskusjohtoisina ja nopeatempoisina. Onnistuessaan kehittämishanke luo perustan aidoille uudistuksille.
Learning from foreign operation modes: The virtuous path for innovation
2020
In this article, we analyze the impact of learning from internationalization on small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) performance along different development paths. Drawing on the exploitation versus exploration logic, we use an alternative view of foreign operation modes (the learning perspective) to provide insights into the impact of such learning on technological and organizational innovation as well as overall performance. Our results, which are derived from a sample of 132 SMEs active in traditional manufacturing industries, point to a path to superior performance that entails resource-augmenting operation modes and organizational innovation. Characterization of softwood and hardwood lignoboost kraft lignins with emphasis on their antioxidant activity
2014
Fractionation of softwood and hardwood LignoBoost kraft lignins, using sequential extraction with organic solvents of increasing hydrogen-bonding ability (dichloromethane, n-propanol, and methanol), was carried out. Using SEC, analytical pyrolysis, FTIR and UV/VIS spectroscopy, and chemical analytical methods, four fractions were obtained and characterized in terms of their yield, composition, functionality, lignin structural features, and antioxidant properties. In tests with free radicals (ABTS●+, DPPH●, O2●-) and the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) assay, the high radical scavenging capacity of the lignin’s soluble fractions was demonstrated. The antioxidant activity of the fra…
Gatekeeper of pluripotency: A common Oct4 transcriptional network operates in mouse eggs and embryonic stem cells
2011
Abstract Background Oct4 is a key factor of an expanded transcriptional network (Oct4-TN) that governs pluripotency and self-renewal in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and in the inner cell mass from which ESCs are derived. A pending question is whether the establishment of the Oct4-TN initiates during oogenesis or after fertilisation. To this regard, recent evidence has shown that Oct4 controls a poorly known Oct4-TN central to the acquisition of the mouse egg developmental competence. The aim of this study was to investigate the identity and extension of this maternal Oct4-TN, as much as whether its presence is circumscribed to the egg or maintained beyond fertilisation. Results By comparing …
