Multivariate searches for single top quark production with the D0 detector

We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the s-channel (p-pbar -> t bbar + X) and t-channel (p-pbar -> tq bbar + X) modes. We have analyzed 230 pb^(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Two separate analysis methods are used: neural networks and a cut-based analysis. No evidence for a single top quark signal is found. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross sections using Bayesian statistics, based on event counts and binned likelihoods formed from the neural network output. Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel at D0

We measure the top quark mass (mt) in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV using dilepton ttbar->W+bW-bbar->l+nubl-nubarbbar events, where l denotes an electron, a muon, or a tau that decays leptonically. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We obtain mt = 174.0 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.4(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the current world average mt = 173.3 +- 1.1 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the dilepton channel.

A method to constrain the neutron star magnetic field in Low Mass X-ray Binaries

We describe here a method to put an upper limit to the strength of the magnetic field of neutron stars in low mass X‐ray binaries for which the spin period and the X‐ray luminosity during X‐ray quiescent periods are known. This is obtained using simple considerations about the position of the magnetospheric radius during quiescent periods. We applied this method to the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4‐3658, which shows coherent X‐ray pulsations at a frequency of ∼ 400 Hz and a quiescent X‐ray luminosity of ∼ 5 × 1031 ergs/s, and found that B ⩽ 5 × 108 Gauss in this source. Stationary and pulsating dissipative light bullets from a collective variable approach

A collective variable approach is used to map domains of existence for (3+1) -dimensional spatiotemporal soliton solutions of a complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation. A rich variety of evolution behaviors, which include stationary and pulsating dissipative soliton dynamics, is revealed. Comparisons between the results obtained by the semianalytical approach of collective variables, and those obtained by a purely numerical approach show good agreement for a wide range of equation parameters. On the convexity of relativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamics

We analyze the influence of the magnetic field in the convexity properties of the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics system of equations. To this purpose we use the approach of Lax, based on the analysis of the linearly degenerate/genuinely non-linear nature of the characteristic fields. Degenerate and non-degenerate states are discussed separately and the non-relativistic, unmagnetized limits are properly recovered. The characteristic fields corresponding to the material and Alfv\'en waves are linearly degenerate and, then, not affected by the convexity issue. A relativistically broadened iron line from an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar

The capabilities of XMM-Newton have been fully exploited to detect a broadened iron Kα emission line from the 2.5 ms Accreting Millisecond Pulsar, SAX J1808.4-3658. The energy of the transition is compatible with fluorescence from neutral/lowly ionized iron. The observed large width (FWHM more than 1 keV) can be explained through Doppler and relativistic broadening from the inner rings of an accretion disc close to the NS. From a fit of the line shape with a diskline model we obtain an estimate of the inner disc radius of 18.0-5.6+7.6km for a 1.4 M⊙ neutron star. The disc is therefore truncated inside the corotation radius (31 km for SAX J1808.4-3658), in agreement with the observation of c…

Relativistically Smeared Iron Lines in the Spectra of Bright NS LMXB

We present preliminary results of a study on three bright accreting low-mass X-ray binaries hosting a neutron star, based on XMM-Newton observations. These sources (GX 340+0, GX 349+2 and SAX J1808.4-3658) show a broad Fe K alpha iron line in their spectra. This feature can be well described by relativistic line profile in each case; the good spectral resolution of the EPIC/PN and the high statistics spectra allow to put very good constraints on the disk geometry and ionization stage of the reflecting matter.

Torus computed tomography

We present a new computed tomography (CT) method for inverting the Radon transform in 2D. The idea relies on the geometry of the flat torus, hence we call the new method Torus CT. We prove new inversion formulas for integrable functions, solve a minimization problem associated to Tikhonov regularization in Sobolev spaces and prove that the solution operator provides an admissible regularization strategy with a quantitative stability estimate. This regularization is a simple post-processing low-pass filter for the Fourier series of a phantom. We also study the adjoint and the normal operator of the X-ray transform on the flat torus.
