Adult congenital heart disease: Special considerations for COVID-19 and vaccine allocation/prioritization
2021
Abstract Individuals with the highest risk for adverse outcomes of COVID-19 should be prioritized by the vaccine allocation policies. We have conducted a literature review of published studies, which comprehend congenital heart disease (CHD) and COVID-19, in order to present the overall evidences of both exposure and clinical risk of patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and to propose a risk profile schema for those patients to be incorporated into vaccine distribution decisions.
Effect of Coronary Disease Characteristics on Prognostic Relevance of Residual Ischemia After Stent Implantation
2021
Objectives: We investigated the influence of coronary disease characteristics on prognostic implications of residual ischemia after coronary stent implantation. Methods: This study included 1,476 patients with drug-eluting stent implantation and available pre- and post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurements. Residual ischemia was defined as post-PCI FFR ≤ 0.80. Coronary disease characteristics with significant interaction hazard ratios (HRs) for clinical outcomes with residual ischemia were defined as interaction characteristics with residual ischemia (ICwRI). The primary outcome was target vessel failure (TVF)—a composite of cardiac death, target…
Electron-phonon heat transport in degenerate Si at low temperatures
2004
The thermal conductance between electrons and phonons in a solid state system becomes comparatively weak at sub‐Kelvin temperatures. In this work five batches of thin heavily doped silicon‐on‐insulator samples with the electron concentration in the range of 2.0–16 × 1019 cm–3 were studied. Below 1 K all the samples were in the dirty limit of the thermal electron‐phonon coupling, where the thermal phonon wavelength exceeds the electron mean free path. The heat flow between electrons and phonons is proportional to (T6e–T6ph), where Te (Tph) is the electron (phonon) temperature. The constant of proportionality of the heat flow strongly depends on the electron concentration and its magnitude is…
Study design of Heart failure Events reduction with Remote Monitoring and eHealth Support (HERMeS)
2020
Aims: The role of non‐invasive telemedicine (TM) combining telemonitoring and teleintervention by videoconference (VC) in patients recently admitted due to heart failure (HF) (‘vulnerable phase’ HF patients) is not well established. The aim of the Heart failure Events reduction with Remote Monitoring and eHealth Support (HERMeS) trial is to assess the impact on clinical outcomes of implementing a TM service based on mobile health (mHealth), which includes remote daily monitoring of biometric data and symptom reporting (telemonitoring) combined with VC structured, nurse‐based follow‐up (teleintervention). The results will be compared with those of the comprehensive HF usual care (UC) strateg…

Real-Life Outcomes of Coronary Bifurcation Stenting in Acute Myocardial Infarction (Zabrze–Opole Registry)
2021
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of bifurcation lesions is a technical challenge associated with high risk of adverse events, especially in primary PCI. The aim of the study is to analyze long-term outcomes after PCI for coronary bifurcation in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The outcome was defined as the rate of major adverse cardiac event related to target lesion failure (MACE-TLF) (death-TLF, nonfatal myocardial infarction-TLF and target lesion revascularization (TLR)) and the rate of stent thrombosis (ST). From 306 patients enrolled to the registry, 113 were diagnosed with AMI. In the long term, AMI was not a risk factor for MACE-TLF. The risk of MACE-TLF was dependent on th…
Real-World Data of Anticoagulant Treatment in Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation
2022
AimsTo assess the impact of anticoagulant treatment on risk for stroke and all-cause mortality of patients with atrial fibrillation using real-world data (RWD).MethodsPatients with prevalent or incident atrial fibrillation were selected throughout a study period of 5 years. Stroke, transitory ischemic attack, hemorrhagic stroke, and all-cause mortality were identified in the claims of the electronic health records (EHRs). Subjects were classified according to the anticoagulant treatment in four groups: untreated, vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), New Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs), and antiplatelet (AP). Risk of events and protection with anticoagulant therapy were calculated by Cox proportional h…
Aortic Stiffness in HIV Infection with and without Antiretroviral Therapy. A Meta-analysis of Observational Studies
2020
Background: The risk of Cardiovascular (CV) events is higher in HIV-infected patients (HIV+) compared to HIV-uninfected persons (HIV−). Large artery stiffness, a well-documented predictor of adverse CV prognosis, may mediate this enhanced risk. It is usually assessed by measuring aortic Pulse Wave Velocity (aPWV). Studies examining arterial stiffness in HIV+ yielded inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis with the aim to evaluate the association of HIV infection and its therapy [Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)] with aPWV. Design and Method: The Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated for aPWV in different comparison groups. Stati…
Promoting a Syndemic Approach for Cardiometabolic Disease Management During COVID-19: The CAPISCO International Expert Panel
2021
Efforts in the fight against COVID-19 are achieving success in many parts of the world, although progress remains slow in other regions. We believe that a syndemic approach needs to be adopted to address this pandemic given the strong apparent interplay between COVID-19, its related complications, and the socio-structural environment. We have assembled an international, multidisciplinary group of researchers and clinical practitioners to promote a novel syndemic approach to COVID-19: the CArdiometabolic Panel of International experts on Syndemic COvid-19 (CAPISCO). This geographically diverse group aims to facilitate collaborative-networking and scientific exchanges between researchers and …
Generalized heat equation and transitions between different heat-transport regimes in narrow stripes
2019
Abstract In the framework of weakly nonlocal thermodynamic theory, in this paper we derive a nonlocal and nonlinear heat-transport equation beyond the Fourier law by means of thermodynamic considerations in agreement with the second law. The obtained equation describes the transitions among different heat-transport regimes. The stability of the solution of that equation is also analyzed in a special case.
