Calibrating accelerometer data, as a promising tool for health and welfare monitoring in aquaculture: Case study in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus …

2021

Abstract Both the conventional and organic aquaculture sectors have grown rapidly over the past few years. Moreover, welfare has attracted increased attention on the part of both consumers and governments. However, fish welfare assessment is complex and thus needs to adapt measurements that are easily applicable to aquaculture conditions. In this study, in addition to classical welfare indicator measurements (physiological stress indicators and growth performance), we recorded the swimming activity data using acoustic transmitters to evaluate the welfare of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed a conventional vs. an organic diet. Prior feeding trial, the swimming activity recorded by…

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on liver cancer management (CERO-19)

2021

[Background & Aims] The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems and it may have heavily impacted patients with liver cancer (LC). Herein, we evaluated whether the schedule of LC screening or procedures has been interrupted or delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shear design of high strength concrete beams in MRFs

2019

This paper presents the criteria for the shear design of high strength concrete (HSC) beams in moment resisting frames (MRFs). The formulation of an analytical model is provided for the case of beams with longitudinal reinforcement in the presence of transverse stirrups. The model is of additive type, in the meaning that the shear resistance of the beam is evaluated as the sum of several contributions. In particular, the contribution of concrete, longitudinal rebars, and transversal reinforcement are taken into account. Furthermore, for assessing the concrete contribution, a classical approach is followed, according to which two effects arise in the shear mechanism: the arc and the beam eff…

Images of the imagined city

2018

The essay investigates one of the projects in the competition for the expansion of the North area of Palermo named ZEN 2 and designed by the architects Pasquale Culotta, Giuseppe Laudicina, Teresa Cannarozzo, Anna Maria Fundarò and Tilde Marra, in 1970. The essay aims at illustrating the spatial, figurative and urban qualities of it. The analysis of the project has been guided by a written text and the graphic support, that is the project report and the attached drawings, in Indian Ink, made by the architects themselves, indeed very often fragmented and difficult to be interpreted. In this regard, the support of digital drawing in two-dimensional and three-dimensional form, based on the cre…

Espacio, tiempo y educación

2015

This paper analyzes the role played by the student movement in the restitution of democracy in Spain. Taking as a starting point the situation of university under the Franco dictatorship, and how (and why) students were dealt with, the major features that set the student movement apart from other kinds of activism in that time are described and linked to the unique effects that it had on the status quo, with a special stress on its ability to generate the kind of cultural change required for overcoming the atmosphere of resignation and consent that helped to keep the government in power. The way in which culture, personal issues, and politics got intertwined is shown as a key trait of stude…

SELF-EXPANDABLE METAL STENT PLACEMENT FOR CLOSURE OF A LEAK AFTER TOTAL GASTRECTOMY FOR GASTRIC CANCER: REPORT ON THREE CASES AND REVIEW OF THE LITER…

2014

In the setting of the curative oncological surgery, the gastric surgery is exposed to complicated upper gastrointestinal leaks, and consequently the management of this problem has become more critically focused than was previously possible. We report here three cases of placement of a partially silicone-coated SEMS (Evolution Controlled Release Esophageal Stent System, Cook Medical, Winston-Salem, NC, USA) in patients who underwent total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y end-to-side esophagojejunostomy for a gastric adenocarcinoma. The promising results of our report, despite the small number of patients, suggest that early stenting (through a partially silicone-coated SEMS) is a feasible alternat…

Virtual tour through the towers of the defensive system in the province of Salerno

2019

The coastal towers of the defensive system in the province of Salerno are architectures developed over time; they are buildings belonging to an extended strategic plan of the coastal territory useful to defend populations and cities from the ancient enemy attacks. Hence, their location comes from careful studies in which the orographic characteristics of the place and the visual connection between a tower and another played a fundamental role. The aim of this work is to focus the attention on the visual communication between the towers, or on the “dialogue” that the different artefacts entertain each other. In order to pursue this objective, a virtual tour that connects the different ancient…

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia: new insights and guidance for clinicians to improve detection and clinical management. A position paper fr…

2014

Item does not contain fulltext AIMS: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH) is a rare life-threatening condition characterized by markedly elevated circulating levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and accelerated, premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD). Given recent insights into the heterogeneity of genetic defects and clinical phenotype of HoFH, and the availability of new therapeutic options, this Consensus Panel on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) critically reviewed available data with the aim of providing clinical guidance for the recognition and management of HoFH.
