Predator-Induced Plasticity on Warning Signal and Larval Life-History Traits of the Aposematic Wood Tiger Moth, Arctia plantaginis
2021
Correction Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution Volume 9 Article Number 737651 DOI 10.3389/fevo.2021.737651 Published JUL 29 2021 Predator-induced plasticity in life-history and antipredator traits during the larval period has been extensively studied in organisms with complex life-histories. However, it is unclear whether different levels of predation could induce warning signals in aposematic organisms. Here, we investigated whether predator-simulated handling affects warning coloration and life-history traits in the aposematic wood tiger moth larva, Arctia plantaginis. As juveniles, a larger orange patch on an otherwise black body signifies a more efficient warning signal against predators…
Sole coloration as an unusual aposematic signal in a Neotropical toad
2019
Many animals have evolved remarkable strategies to avoid predation. In diurnal, toxic harlequin toads (Atelopus) from the Amazon basin, we find a unique colour signal. Some Atelopus populations have striking red soles of the hands and feet, visible only when walking. When stationary, the toads are hard to detect despite their yellow-black dorsal coloration. Consequently, they switch between high and low conspicuousness. Interestingly, some populations lack the extra colour display of the soles. We found comprehensive support that the red coloration can act as an aposematic signal directed towards potential predators: red soles are significantly more conspicuous than soles lacking red colora…

Effectiveness of a kindergarten-based intervention to increase vegetable intake and reduce food neophobia amongst 1-year-old children: a cluster rand…
2021
Background: Children’s first years of life are crucial to their future health. Studies show that a varied diet with a high intake of vegetables is positive in several domains of health. The present low vegetable intake amongst children is, therefore, a concern. Food neophobia is a common barrier to vegetable intake in children. As most Norwegian children attend kindergarten from an early age, kindergartens could contribute to the prevention of food neophobia and the promotion of vegetable intake. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a cluster randomised trial amongst 1-year-old children in kindergarten to reduce food neophobia and promote healthy eating. Methods: Kin…
Inntak av frukt og grønnsaker fra barndom til voksen alder i relasjon til sosioøkonomisk status
2017
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap ME516 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 Background: The consumption of fruits and vegetables are lower than recommended in the Norwegian population. Studies have shown that groups of high socioeconomic status have a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables than groups of low socioeconomic status. Purpose: The purpose of the task is to investigate (1) how the consumption of fruit and vegetables has changed from childhood to adulthood, (2) how socioeconomic status, measured with different indicators, is associated with consumption of fruits and vegetables, and (3) in what way the development of fruit and vegetable intake has changed from childhood to adulthood …
Preeklampsi i Fit for fødsel
2016
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Background:Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy, affectingtwo to eight percentages of all pregnanciesworldwide. Important aspects of the causal mechanisms of preeclampsia are still unknown. It is however reason to believe that preeclampsia consists of several subtypes and various causal mechanisms canbe involved. The role of obesity, excessive gestational weight gain and maternal diet in the risk of preeclampsia has recently received increased attention.Thesis question:Are there differences regarding gestational weight gain, select blood sample parametres and dietary habits between primiparous women who develop pr…
Numerical Simulations of the Flow Field of a Submerged Hydraulic Jump over Triangular Macroroughnesses
2021
The submerged hydraulic jump is a sudden change from the supercritical to subcritical flow, specified by strong turbulence, air entrainment and energy loss. Despite recent studies, hydraulic jump characteristics in smooth and rough beds, the turbulence, the mean velocity and the flow patterns in the cavity region of a submerged hydraulic jump in the rough beds, especially in the case of triangular macroroughnesses, are not completely understood. The objective of this paper was to numerically investigate via the FLOW-3D model the effects of triangular macroroughnesses on the characteristics of submerged jump, including the longitudinal profile of streamlines, flow patterns in the cavity regi…
