Shape identification in inverse medium scattering problems with a single far-field pattern

2016

Consider time-harmonic acoustic scattering from a bounded penetrable obstacle $D\subset {\mathbb R}^N$ embedded in a homogeneous background medium. The index of refraction characterizing the material inside $D$ is supposed to be Holder continuous near the corners. If $D\subset {\mathbb R}^2$ is a convex polygon, we prove that its shape and location can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern incited by a single incident wave at a fixed frequency. In dimensions $N \geq 3$, the uniqueness applies to penetrable scatterers of rectangular type with additional assumptions on the smoothness of the contrast. Our arguments are motivated by recent studies on the absence of nonscattering waven…

Creating Office Spaces in the Mediterranean. The importance of well-being, health and performance of office users

2018

Recent research has studied the influence of office buildings indoor environment quality (IEQ) on employees’ well-being, health and performance. However, it seems that it has not been explicitly explored what are the appropriate environmental conditions to different work patterns that coexist in these spaces. This paper presents results of an empirical research, based on the synchronized measurements of different IEQ parameters (i.e., noise, lighting and temperature), and well-being, health and performance of 71 employees in twelve office spaces in the Valencian Community along three periods, considering winter and summer conditions. Findings of the first winter period data, suggest the exi…

Adsorption of anionic dyes onto natural, thermally and chemically modified smectite clays

2014

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the adsorption capacity of the smectite clays (from the overburden of the lignite deposit in Belchatow) for two anionic dyes, i.e. Reactive Blue 81 (RB-81) and Direct Blue 74 (DB-74). Additionally, the influence of the thermal and chemical (acid and alkali) clay modifications on the amount of bonded dyes was investigated. The adsorption capacity of the clay (natural and modified) was different for studied dyes and depended on the initial concentration and modification type. All the modified clays adsorbed the dyes at pH>pHPZC as the negatively charged surfaces of their particles (in accordance with the formula: AOH ↔ AO- + H+) prevented the…

Social Inequalities and the Reform of Romanian Public Pension System by Law no. 127/2019

2019

Social protection system had developed in order to ensure the protection of the citizens, but also to maintain the economic growth of the country. The importance of the pension system is given by its social purpose, which is poverty alleviation, adequacy of income and consumption smoothing at retirement. In countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the income inequalities – main cause of poverty, had increased with the economic development. The aim of this paper is to show the changes brought to Romanian public pension system by the Law no. 127/2019 regarding the provided benefits vis-à-vis of social inequalities existing among elderly people.

Communicative Functions of Hashtags

2018

Abstract Despite the initial function of hashtags as tools for sorting and aggregating information according to topics, the social media currently witness a diversity of uses diverging from the initial purpose. The aim of this article is to investigate the communicative functions of hashtags through a combined approach of literature review, field study and case study. Different uses of hashtags were subjected to semantic analysis in order to disclose generalizable trends. As a result, ten communicative functions were identified: topic-marking, aggregation, socializing, excuse, irony, providing metadata, expressing attitudes, initiating movements, propaganda and brand marketing. These findin…

Sosiaalisen median kommenttien analyysi multimodaalisesta näkökulmasta digitaalisen journalismin ja poliittisen viestinnän tutkimuksessa

2021

Societal discussions flow on social media platforms that are studied by researchers in multiple ways and through various kinds of data sets that are extracted from them. In the studies of these discussions, multimodality unravels the semiotic modes that are communication resources through which meanings are socially and culturally created and expressed. In addition, the viewpoint of affordances can be used for viewing the functions of social media platforms and their discussions. Furthermore, this review was conducted to better understand how social media comments are researched from the perspective of multimodality in the context of digital journalism and political communication. A systema…

Optimal Volume for Concert Halls Based on Ando’s Subjective Preference and Barron Revised Theories

2014

[EN] The Ando-Beranek s model, a linear version of Ando s subjective preference theory, obtained by the authors in a recent work, was combined with Barron revised theory. An optimal volume region for each reverberation time was obtained for classical music in symphony orchestra concert halls. The obtained relation was tested with good agreement with the top rated halls reported by Beranek and other halls with reported anomalies.

CIRCULAR PROCESSES FOR A NEW URBAN METABOLYSM: THE ROLE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE IN THE SUSTAINABLE REQUALIFICATION

2014

Through this paper we present the first results of a research combining the management problem of Municipal Solid Waste to the requalification of built environment. The goal of this research is to mitigate the vulnerability of territory and urban heritage and to transform a problem into opportunities. Above all, we have paid attention to several exemplifying cases of Italian territory: suburbs of large towns, historical centres, small centres (and, in particular, those with a strong historical connotation). Their features are, at the same time, restrictions and challenges for designing new compatible systems that can contribute to the requalification of urban landscape recovering spaces wit…
