Middle Eocene calcareous nannofossils in the Jaca transect (South-central Pyrenees Eocene Basin, Aragón river valley, Huesca)
2020
The calcareous nanoplankton is studied from the base of the turbidite systems of the Upper Hecho Group (Jaca Basin, middle Eocene of the South-central Pyrenean Basin) up to the Gracionepel instabilities, within the Larres slope Marls. This new chronostratigraphic contribution is of crucial importance for the improvement of the detailed temporal and spatial correlation framework of the genetically related depositional systems at basin scale. The calcareous nanofossil assemblage is largely dominated by Coccolithus pelagicus , C. formous as well as different species of Reticulofenestra , accompanied by occasional specimens of several species of Sphenolithus and Chiasmolithus . The results obt…
Relative Vessel Motion Tracking using Sensor Fusion, Aruco Markers, and MRU Sensors
2017
This paper presents a novel approach for estimating the relative motion between two moving offshore vessels. The method is based on a sensor fusion algorithm including a vision system and two motion reference units (MRUs). The vision system makes use of the open-source computer vision library OpenCV and a cube with Aruco markers placed onto each of the cube sides. The Extended Quaternion Kalman Filter (EQKF) is used for bad pose rejection for the vision system. The presented sensor fusion algorithm is based on the Indirect Feedforward Kalman Filter for error estimation. The system is self-calibrating in the sense that the Aruco cube can be placed in an arbitrary location on the secondary ve…
Recension of Collins, M.E., Manchester, S.R. & Wilde, W. 2012
2020
Collins, M.E., Manchester, S.R. & Wilde, W. 2012. Fossil fruits and seeds of the Middle Eocene Messel biota, Germany.Abhandlungen der Senckenberg Gessellschaft für Naturforschung, 570, 251 pp. ISBN 978-3-510-61400-4 This book presents a survey of the extensive fruit and seed collection found at the Middle Eocene Messel site. The first part of the book is dedicated to a few introductory chapters about the site, geologic setting, age control of the sedimentary sequence and taphonomy of the fossil remains. It is worth pointing out that unlike many lacustrine deposits in which fruits are preserved as impressions, most of the Messel plant macrofossils are preserved as remnants of the original pl…
The Effects of the Use of Serious Game in Eco-Driving Training
2016
International audience; Serious games present a promising approach to training and learning. The player is engaged in a virtual environment for a purpose beyond pure entertainment, all while having fun. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the use of serious game in eco-driving training. An approach has been developed in order to improve players’ practical skills in terms of eco-driving. This approach is based on the development of a driving simulation based on a serious game, integrating a multisensorial guidance system with metaphors including visual messages (information on fuel consumption, ideal speed area, gearbox management, etc.) and sounds (spatialized sounds, voice message…

Sviluppo e Applicazioni di nuovi materiali per la dosimetria delle radiazioni ionizzanti
The Research Activities carried out during the Three-year International PhD Course in Applied Physics of the candidate Salvatore Gallo had two main topics related to dosimetry of ionizing radiations (IR): the analysis of 3D gel dosimeters and the analysis of solid state dosimeters through electron spin resonance. Both these activities are focused on a careful study of new materials for the IR Dosimetry, both in terms of physical characterization of these new materials and of the optimization of readout methods for dosimetric measurements. The study performed through various techniques such as UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, NMR Relaxometry, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electron Spin…
Middle Triassic (Ladinian) deep-water sediments in Sicily: New findings from the Madonie Mountains
2012
A section of carbonate megabreccias grading upward to deep-water Daonella limestones is described from the locality of Sant’Otiero, near Petralia Sottana, in the Madonie Mountains (Sicily). The megabreccia mainly consists of neritic elements containing dasycladalean algae (Diplopora annulatissima Pia) along with benthic foraminifers and problematics. The overlying calcilutitic strata are characterized by lumachella intercalations containing the bivalve Daonella tyrolensis Mojsisovics suggesting an early Late Ladinian (Protrachyceras longobardicum ammonoid zone) age. We informally name the Daonella limestone as the calcare di Sant’Otiero (Sant’Otiero limestone). The Daonella limestones along…
Birkhoff's aesthetics, Arnheim's entropy. Some remarks on complexity and fuzzy entropy in arts
2015
A judgement of aesthetic in arts is, by sheer consensus, a daunting task that requires evaluation of a whole host of endogenous and exogenous cultural factors. A few of them can actually provide very useful hints in tackling foundational problems in Information Science in a more natural setting than what is usually provided by a typical engineering stance. This interaction can however work the other way about, as instruments from the Information and Computer Science toolkit may help in focusing the less explored features of art and its evaluation. When all the social, historical, hermeneutical and political considerations are stripped from the living flesh of the piece, we lose most of wha…
Dynamic thermal rating for overhead lines: Self-adaptive protection device
2013
The increase in the consumption of electricity, the stringent environmental restrictions and the need to keep costs, make ever more meaningful the need for a flexible operation of existing overhead lines. This paper studies the possibility to use a dynamic thermal rating for overhead line starting from the analysis of the mathematical model and the ability of the latter to reflect the temperature of an overhead conductor in different ambient condition; then it simulates the thermal behaviour of a conductor both in steady state and dynamic one. Finally the paper shows a method for a self-adaptive thermal protection system.
