Climate Change Literature in the English Subject Classroom : Discussing how English teachers can use Young Adult Climate Fiction to teach about susta…
2020
Master´s thesis in English (EN501) This thesis explores the Young Adult DystopiaThe Sandcastle Empireby Kayla Olson and the Young Adult Climate FictionsThe Final Six and The Life Belowby Alexandra Monir and their different depictions of a future world affected by climate change. Intending to figure out how an English teacher in a Norwegian classroom may use these novels, the thesis discusses the criticism of capitalism, scientific innovation, and parental responsibilities given to the teenage protagonists. The thesis does this through an ecocritical lens and focuses on the characteristics of Anthropocene and Climate Fiction. Simultaneously, the thesis examines how the novels may affect the …
Written Corrective Feedback and the Development of L2 Learner Language : A longitudinal study of lower secondary EFL writing in Norway
2020
Master´s thesis in English (EN501) Aiming to explore teacher written corrective feedback and learner errors qualitatively and longitudinally, the present study investigates two teachers’ WCF to errors in the written production of three lower secondary EFL students in Norway over the course of three school years. The study is divided in four parts: an error analysis of the students’ writing once every six months, a feedback analysis of the teachers’ WCF to errors in the same samples of writing, a tracking of possible improvement in selected types of errorsin subsequent writing (for error categories corrected by the teacher and revised by the student), and a semi-structured interview to inclu…
Young Norwegian Learners’ Perception and Recognition of English Variants : Relationships with language exposure and media intake
2021
Master´s thesis in English (EN502) English as a tool of communication is emphasized in the Norwegian subject curriculum reform of 2020, and no competence aims are directly connected towards the choice of English variant. The present study investigates young Norwegian learners’ perception of differences between American English and British English and their ability to identify a specific variant, seen in relation to passive English exposure. The data collection comprised two parts: a questionnaire of exposure to English outside of school and a perception test of selected phonetic features contrasting the English variants under investigation. 40 students in year 5 participated in the study, a…
English Argumentative Writing in Norwegian Lower Secondary School : Are year 10 lower secondary students sufficiently prepared for L2 argumentative w…
2018
Master's thesis education EN502 - University of Agder 2018 This thesis studies English language argumentative writing instruction in Norwegian lower secondary schools with an eye towards evaluating year 10 students’ academic preparation for argumentative writing in upper secondary. Argumentation is a key skill for academic success and is an important skill for civic life in a democracy. While research is scarce on the topic of academic and argumentative writing in upper secondary school, it is even scarcer in lower secondary. Because of this, the present study is one of the first studies examining argumentative writing proficiency at the lower level. In order to examine the situation in low…
Behind the teaching of American culture in the second language classroom
2019
Master's thesis English EN502 - University of Agder 2019 In this thesis, anempirical study will show how different teachers might differ in their way of teaching Americanculture in the Norwegianclassroom. Three main questions have been made to structure theway in which the study will take on the issue. The objective is to investigate the issue on the basis of these three research questions:•How might a class about Americanculture differ from other Englishlessons, is there a difference in planning and source material used?•What methods are used when teaching Americanculture and why are these methods chosen?•How can culture teaching have aneffect on the dynamics and language learning in the c…
English Academic Writing in the Norwegian Upper Secondary School : How does upper secondary school ESL instruction help students develop academic wri…
2021
Master´s thesis in English (EN502) The purpose of this thesis has been to investigate how English academic writing instruction in Norway is perceived by upper secondary students, and how it is carried out from their point of view as a support to improve their academic writing skills. The following was the research question for my thesis: What do students in Norwegian upper secondary school know about writing academic English, and how do they practice writing English as a preparation for higher education? The question calls for a review of the current ESL instruction as well as a review of the English subject curriculum (LK20). The corpus consisted of nine students of English, three females …
Social studies in early childhood education and care: A scoping review focusing on diversity
2020
Currently, little research exists on social studies within the context of Norwegian early childhood education and care, and how early childhood teachers work to familiarise children with social studies contexts . This article is a scoping literature review offering a preliminary research agenda. Its aim is to explore the ways in which the early childhood teacher can work to ensure young learners’ social studies education with a specific focus on cultural diversity and subsequent educational challenges. The research question guiding the article asks: How does previous educational research show that early childhood teachers can use social studies to address diversity with and amongst children…
A European multicentre evaluation of detection and typing methods for human enteroviruses and parechoviruses using RNA transcripts
2020
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection has become the gold standard for diagnosis and typing of enterovirus (EV) and human parechovirus (HPeV) infections. Its effectiveness depends critically on using the appropriate sample types and high assay sensitivity as viral loads in cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and sepsis clinical presentation can be extremely low. This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of currently used commercial and in‐house diagnostic and typing assays. Accurately quantified RNA transcript controls were distributed to 27 diagnostic and 12 reference laboratories in 17 European countries for blinded testing. Transcripts represented the four human EV…
Coincidental loss of bacterial virulence in multi-enemy microbial communities.
2014
The coincidental virulence evolution hypothesis suggests that outside-host selection, such as predation, parasitism and resource competition can indirectly affect the virulence of environmentally-growing bacterial pathogens. While there are some examples of coincidental environmental selection for virulence, it is also possible that the resource acquisition and enemy defence is selecting against it. To test these ideas we conducted an evolutionary experiment by exposing the opportunistic pathogen bacterium Serratia marcescens to the particle-feeding ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila, the surfacefeeding amoeba Acanthamoeba castellanii, and the lytic bacteriophage Semad11, in all possible combi…
