Morphological and biochemical features of Borrelia burgdorferi pleomorphic forms
2015
The spirochaete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is the causative agent of Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne infection in the northern hemisphere. There is a long-standing debate regarding the role of pleomorphic forms in Lyme disease pathogenesis, while very little is known about the characteristics of these morphological variants. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of B. burgdorferi pleomorphic formation in different culturing conditions at physiological temperature. Interestingly, human serum induced the bacterium to change its morphology to round bodies (RBs). In addition, biofilm-like colonies in suspension were found to be part of B. burgdorferi’s normal in vitr…

Learning mathematics through mathematical modelling : a study of secondary school students in Nigeria
2014
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2014 The focus of this study is to investigate the impact that mathematical modelling activities may have in the learning process of mathematics amongst observed Nigerian secondary school students. I also wish to find out in what way mathematical modelling activities may help the observed Nigerian secondary school students to see the relevance of mathematics to real life. From a pedagogical perspective, I wish to examine if the application of modelling in the learning process of mathematics may be a vehicle for the enhancement and support of students' learning of mathematics as a subject. I started this thesis by looking at some pa…
Laboratory mathematics: learning equations with a double-winch as a tool
2014
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2014 Many studies show that algebra is perceived by pupils as an abstract, difficult to understand subject with almost no connections to every-day reality. Therefore, the motivation for this research was to find out what helps to make the abstract topic of algebra more meaningful to pupils and how we can assist them in discovering that algebra can be useful for establishing connections between different variables. Using mechanical tools with pairs of weights that move with different velocities could be promising for instructional purposes. First of all, the different velocities of the weights make variables and their relationship t…
2021
Master's thesis in Mathematics education (MA500) The theme for this master thesis is programming in mathematics education. Due to an increasing digitalization of our society, there has grown forth a need to include more programming and digital technology in our schools. In the autumn of 2020, all curriculums for subjects in Norwegian primary and secondary schools were updated; renewed. All subjects received descriptions of the core elements pertaining to that subject which described what it was most important for pupils to learn in each subject. The number of subjects and time allocated to each subject remained unchanged. One of the differences in mathematics was the inclusion of programmin…
Achivement of 9th and 11th grade students in algebra and numbers : research based on data from the KUL - LCM project
2007
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk 2007 - Høgskolen i Agder, Kristiansand The project Learning Communities in Mathematics (LCM) is a project established by the Agder University College (HiA) in 2004 and supported by the Research Council of Norway. The aims of the project include to design and study mathematics teaching development through communities of inquiry between teachers from the school participating in the project and didacticians from HiA who research the outcome of the project. Part of the LCM project is a longitudinal study of students’ achievements in 4th, 7th, 9th and 11th grade. Groups of students in those grades, from seven schools participating in the project are given diag…
"Descartes' parabola" and the traditional parabola : a reconstruction of a historical method with the help of the "mathematica" program
2007
Masteroppgave i matematikkdidaktikk 2007 - Høgskolen i Agder, Kristiansand This study concentrates on Descartes’ geometry, especially the Descartes’ parabola and traditional parabola. Who is Descartes? René Descartes (1596-1650) was a 17th century French philosopher, mathematician and a man of science whose work, La géométrie, includes his application of algebra to geometry from which we now have Cartesian geometry. His work had a great influence on both mathematicians and philosophers. In mathematics Descartes chief contribution was in analytical geometry. Descartes made other known contributions to mathematics. He was the first to use the first letters of the alphabet to represent known q…
