Less Data Same Information for Event-Based Sensors: A Bioinspired Filtering and Data Reduction Algorithm
2018
Sensors provide data which need to be processed after acquisition to remove noise and extract relevant information. When the sensor is a network node and acquired data are to be transmitted to other nodes (e.g., through Ethernet), the amount of generated data from multiple nodes can overload the communication channel. The reduction of generated data implies the possibility of lower hardware requirements and less power consumption for the hardware devices. This work proposes a filtering algorithm (LDSI&mdash
Explanations for use of dietary- and muscle enhancing dietary supplements among university students: a national cross-sectional study.
2022
Abstract Background Use of dietary supplements (DS) and muscle enhancing dietary supplements (MEDS) is frequent among students despite the lack of evidence of effects and health risks related to consumption. We need to increase our understanding of students’ motivation, examine potential gender differences, and explore explanatory factors, to address preventive measures related to use. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the frequency of, and the reasons for, DS use among university students, as well as explanatory factors for use of MEDS. Method Male and female students from nine Norwegian universities participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants responded to questions about…
La religión del cuerpo-mercancía: ¿un nuevo opio del pueblo?
2018
The commercial exploitation or more precisely the total capitalist management of the human body erects this as a universal divinity. The direct consequence of this generalized corporal capitalism is the massive depoliticization of the body and, often, the reflection that is dedicated to it. In this article, we seek to reflect on the current practices of bodily modifications within the framework of the changes in the regimes of neoliberal governance in recent decades. This reflection is guided by the revision of central texts of critical theory
Ethical Leaders Promote Quality of Life Through Fair and Trust-based Relationships
2020
Ethical leadership has become an important field of research. This article examines the impact of ethical leadership within the context of healthcare organizations. Based on social learning theory, we examine the relationship between ethical leadership and quality of life, mediated by peer justice and moderated by trust in the leader. Participants in this study consisted of 388 professionals from 59 centers affiliated with “Plena Inclusión”, an NGO whose mission is to improve the quality of life of individuals with intellectual disabilities in Spain. Results showed a significant relationship between ethical leadership and quality of life, through a partial mediation of overall peer justice.…
Georeferenced cartography dataset of the La Fossa crater fumarolic field at Vulcano Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy): conversion and comparison of…
2011
The present study illustrates the procedures applied for the coordinate system conversion of the historical fumarole positions at La Fossa crater, to allow their comparison with newly acquired global positioning system (GPS) data. Due to the absence of ground control points in the field and on both the old Gauss Boaga and the new UTM WGS 1984 maps, we had to model the transformation errors between the two systems using differential GPS techniques. Once corrected, the maps show a residual Easting shifting, due to erroneous georeferencing of the original base maps; this is corrected by morphological comparative methods. The good correspondence between the corrected positions of the historical…

Associations between changes in physical fitness and psychological difficulties status among Norwegian adolescents
2021
Abstract Objectives To investigate the associations for one-year changes in cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and body mass index, with psychological difficulties status in adolescents. Methods Norwegian 14-15-year-olds (n = 925) participated in data collection at two time points separated by one year. Psychological difficulties were assessed via the Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire and data from follow-up serve as the dependent variable. Cardiorespiratory fitness (the Andersen-test), muscular strength (Eurofit) and body mass index were measured. Change scores were calculated from the physical fitness variables and serve as independent variables in linear mixed effects mo…
Low-Cost Sensor Based on SDR Platforms for TETRA Signals Monitoring
2021
The paper presents the design and implementation of an electromagnetic field monitoring sensor for the measurement of the Terrestrial Truncked Radio (TETRA) signals using low-cost software defined radio (SDR) platforms. The sensor includes: an SDR platform, a Global Positioning System (GPS) module and a hardware control module. Several SDR platforms having different resolutions of the analog–digital converters were tested in the first phase. The control module was implemented in two variants: a fixed one, using a laptop, and a mobile one, using a Raspberry Pi. The tests demonstrate the following achieved performances: instantaneous acquisition band of 5.12 MHz
Reinforcement Efficiency of Cellulose Microfibers for the Tensile Stiffness and Strength of Rigid Low-Density Polyurethane Foams
2020
Rigid low-density closed-cell polyurethane (PU) foams are widely used in both thermal insulation and structural applications. The sustainability of PU foam production can be increased by using bio-based components and fillers that ensure both enhanced mechanical properties and higher renewable material content. Such bio-based foams were produced using polyols derived from rapeseed oil and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) fibers as filler. The effect of MCC fiber loading of up to 10 wt % on the morphology, tensile stiffness, and strength of foams has been evaluated. For estimation of the mechanical reinforcement efficiency of foams, a model allowing for the partial alignment of filler fibers…
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF DAIRY WASTEWATER IN THE MUREŞ COUNTY, ROMANIA
2017
The objective of this study was to investigate the main quality indicators of wastewater in a dairy factory located in Mureş County, with a water treatment plant built recently. The wastewater samples were tested for extractable matter, total suspended matter, fixed residue, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and pH values. The results indicated that pollution levels of wastewater samples tested were found high. This means that the method of treatment does not have the necessary effectiveness that can cause high load of effluent in NH4+, total suspended solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand - COD-Cr, Biochemical Oxygen Demand - BOD5, pH for dairy wastewater fr…
