Sourcing practices in online journalism : an ethnographic study of the formation of trust in and the use of journalistic sources

2017

Arguably one of the most important factors of journalistic quality is careful source selection. Studies on online journalism have revealed working conditions which may lead to poor sourcing practices. This article seeks to answer the following questions: What sources do online journalists use, and how do they rationalize their sourcing practices? A total of 17 Finnish online journalists in 7 newsrooms were observed and interviewed over their practices of source searching, evaluation, and use. The study revealed five distinctive rationales of source use, which I call trust discourses: the ideological, the pragmatic, the cynically pragmatic, the consensual, and the contextual trust. Different…

Positive Psychological Capital as a Predictor of Satisfaction With the Fly-In Fly-Out Model

2021

The flexibility of the markets and international agreements lure a growing number of companies to expand their business beyond frontiers in search for new markets and a bigger business network. Workers, initially called expatriates, become keystones to implant and promote the so desired expansion into the international markets. From the concept of flexpatriate present in the literature in general, we adapted the concept of FLY-in FLY-out (FIFO) to comprehend the organizational flexpatriates. In the midst of the Positive Psychology theories, Luthans et al. underline that workers are the psychological capital of the companies. Therefore, the development of the Positive Psychological Capital b…

Students’ Perceptions of Teachers’ Corrective Feedback, Basic Psychological Needs and Subjective Vitality: A Multilevel Approach

2020

The way students perceive corrective feedback has repercussions on what they learn and think. Based on the self-determination theory, the aim of this study is to test a model of multilevel mediation that examines the relationships between the perception of corrective feedback with its degree of acceptance (perceived legitimacy) at the team level and the subjective vitality of students at the individual level, mediated by the satisfaction of the three psychological needs, in the context of physical education. The participants were 742 students aged between 10 and 13 years old (52.6% men, 47.4% women) in 29 physical education groups. The results of the multilevel structural equation modeling …

On the social meanings inherent in literacy campaigns

1990

Fathers’ narratives on support and agency : a case study of fathers in a Finnish child welfare NGO

2017

In Finland, one of the Nordic countries, shared parenting is widely supported through, e.g. family policies and legislation. This is also evident in daily parental practices, as fathers’ share in childcare has increased notably since the late 1980s. Unfortunately, this is not the whole picture of Finnish and Nordic fatherhood: practitioners in child welfare also encounter many fathers with various problems in parenting and life management. In this article, we examine the narratives of fathers who have sought and received support from a Finnish nationwide child welfare NGO. Our research question is: What types of narratives on seeking and receiving support and on their agency do fathers prod…

Privacy protection in a mobile biomedical information collection service

2006

Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2006 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad This report presents a model in a mobile health care environment and uses a combination of existing technologies to build a privacy protection scheme. This work covers security issues in both the wireless and wired network, and proposes solutions to these issues. A framework using PKI to distribute digital certificates combined with strong encryption using the AES algorithm is described. Using this framework in combination with a RBAC model using location control we present some principles that will ensure privacy in a mobile wireless biomedical information collection service.

Association Between Gait Speed With Mortality, Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer:A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

2018

Objectives: Slow gait speed may be associated with premature mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer, although a comprehensive meta-analysis is lacking. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we explored potential associations between gait speed and mortality, incident CVD, and cancer. Design: A systematic search in major databases was undertaken from inception until March 15, 2018 for prospective cohort studies reporting data on gait speed and mortality, incident CVD, and cancer. Setting and Participants: All available. Measures: The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), based on the model with the maximum number of covariates for each study bet…

Internet- and mobile-based aftercare and relapse prevention in mental disorders: A systematic review and recommendations for future research

2018

Background Mental disorders are characterized by a high likelihood of recurrence. Thus, aftercare and follow-up interventions aim to maintain treatment gains and to prevent relapse. Internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) may represent promising instruments in tertiary prevention. This systematic review summarizes and evaluates the research on the efficacy of IMIs as aftercare or follow-up interventions for adults with mental health issues. Methods A systematic database search (PsycInfo, MEDLINE, CENTRAL) was conducted and studies selected according to predefined eligibility criteria (RCTs, adult population, clinical symptoms/disorder, assessed with validated instruments, clinical-p…
