Using a phone-based learning tool as an instructional resource for initial literacy learning in rural African families
2020
Background: Despite increased enrolments at primary schools in Zambia, more than half of the children in Grades 1–4 are unable to meet the required minimum standards for literacy. Aim: The study set out to examine the effects of using a phone-based mobile literacy game (Graphogame) to improve literacy skills in children and adults in rural family settings. Setting: The study was conducted in the Katete District, a rural town in the eastern province of Zambia. Methods: Participants were 73 Grade 2 learners (52% boys, mean age 9 years and 48% girls, mean age 10 years) and 37 parents (mean age 36 years). Three literacy tests, measuring letter-sound identification, phonological awareness, spell…

On the high-pressure phase stability and elastic properties ofβ-titanium alloys
2017
We have studied the compressibility and stability of different β-titanium alloys at high pressure, including binary Ti–Mo, Ti–24Nb–4Zr–8Sn (Ti2448) and Ti–36Nb–2Ta–0.3O (gum metal). We observed stability of the β phase in these alloys to 40 GPa, well into the ω phase region in the P–T diagram of pure titanium. Gum metal was pressurised above 70 GPa and forms a phase with a crystal structure similar to the η phase of pure Ti. The bulk moduli determined for the different alloys range from 97 ± 3 GPa (Ti2448) to 124 ± 6 GPa (Ti–16.8Mo–0.13O).
A Phenomenographic Study of Adolescents’ Conceptions of Health Information Appraisal as a Critical Component of Adolescent Health Literacy
2020
This paper reports on a health literacy study that explored adolescents’ conceptualizations of health information appraisal as a social practice in Latvia. The study was guided by phenomenography, a qualitative research approach used to describe people’s conceptions of a particular phenomenon. A purposive, maximum variation sampling was used, and 24 adolescents were recruited to take part in the study, ranging from 13 to 16 year-olds. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken for data collection. A phenomenographic method for data analysis was performed using the guidelines proved by Sandberg. The data analysis presented seven categories of description and an outcome space representing the…
The Fuzzy Concept of Idiom and What It Might Mean for Bilingual Dictionaries
2019
Linguistic categories were developed as tools for describing language systems and making them easier to learn. However, like many theoretical concepts and systems, they do not fully represent the real world and, in some cases, seek to imprison linguistic units within a well-ordered system – a procrustean bed as it were. Besides, although the most general categories are universal, the lower-ranking ones are often language-specific. Idiom (or phraseologism) is a very unclear linguistic concept, subject to never-ending debate. However, a strict adherence to categorisation is observable in practical bilingual lexicography and phraseography. This may lead to unwanted compartmentalisation and a…
A phenomenological view of pictures in teaching and a novel method for analysing them
2014
In this paper a novel method for analysing the content and teaching potential of pictures is presented. It is the four-field method, which is based on phenomenological thoughts about human experience, which combines factual knowledge with emotions and personal and social meanings. A biological example is given. Around this idea a course unit for using pictures in science teaching was organized. It was used in the training of both primary and secondary level teachers. From picture analysis the course unit proceeds to planning the use of pictures in teaching. A classification of the teaching functions of pictures is presented.
Klatring i trær og hyttebygging: - om barns lek og lekesteder ute
2015
Abstract: This article describes 10 year old children`s play in nature during school hours. However, my result does equally reflect on children in kindergarden as well. Observation and conversation was used as methods as well as pictures. The children’s play in the trees and building huts was conducted in groups, and their communication was nonverbal with each other and with the nature. However; the girls reveal that they enjoy their conversations while being in the tree. The children often play at the same place over and over. This is significant to the evolution of the play and the children’s communication with their places in nature.Sammendrag: Denne artikkelen omhandler 10 år gamle bar…
Els exilis de Vicent Andrés Estellés
2004
This study analyzes the repercussions and treatment of the production of the Valencian poet, Vicent Andrés Estellés during exile. It takes as a starting oint different moments and texts both from the post-war period and the sixties and the beginning of the eighties –especially during 1956, a seminal year in the evolution of the author. On the one hand, I have carried out an analysis of intertextual relations with Carles Riba with regard to the referent “Súnion” and its appearance in the Llibre de meravelles. On the other, I have recuperated and made detail comments on the unpublished original version of the manuscript of «L’exiliat» from the end of 1956, in the book of poems Llibre d’exilis…
