Around the first half century B.C. the first Roman school of philosophy arose, which was called School of Sextii. The known members of the School were: Quintus Sextius the Elder, founding father of the School, Sextius Niger, Quintus' son, who became scholarch of the School after his father's death, Sotion, Papirius Fabianus (both teachers of Seneca the Younger), Crassicius Pasicles, a grammarian, and Celsius Cornelius, an expert doctor. The author attempts to interpret two paintings by Caspar David Friedrich with the motif of the hero turned with the back to the spectator. The former is one of his most renown works entitled Wanderer above the Sea of Fog also known as Wanderer Above the Mist, the latter, a slightly later work Woman at a Window – the example of a frequently used open widow motif in the iconography of Romanticism. The differences that decide on the meaning of these two canvases – as the author argues – is the gender of the created personas and the place from which they perceive the world.

The treatment given to wolves differed from the treatment meted out to other large predators. The Romans generally seem to have refrained from intentionally harming wolves. For instance, they were not hunted for pleasure (but only in order to protect herds that were out at pasture), and not displayed in the venationes, either.
