Rheological and Flocculation Analysis of Microfibrillated Cellulose Suspension Using Optical Coherence Tomography

2018

A sub-micron resolution optical coherence tomography device was used together with a pipe rheometer to analyze the rheology and flocculation dynamics of a 0.5% microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) suspension. The bulk behavior of the MFC suspension showed typical shear thinning (power-law) behavior. This was reflected in a monotonously decreasing floc size when the shear stress exceeded the yield stress of the suspension. The quantitative viscous behavior of the MFC suspension changed abruptly at the wall shear stress of 10 Pa, which was reflected in a simultaneous abrupt drop of the floc size. The flocs were strongly elongated with low shear stresses. With the highest shear stresses, the flocs…

Therapeutic modulation of lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2)

2011

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a calcium-independent phospholipase A2 that circulates in plasma in association with lipoprotein particles, whereas in atherosclerotic plaques it is co-localized with macrophages. Lp-PLA2 generates two proinflammatory mediators, lysophosphatidylcholine and oxidized nonesterified fatty acids, which play a role in the development of atherosclerotic lesions and formation of a necrotic core, leading to more vulnerable plaques. Epidemiologic studies demonstrate that increased circulating levels of Lp-PLA2 predict an increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular mortality. Furthermore, histologic examination of diseased hum…

Effects of garlic powders with varying alliin contents on hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes in rats

2003

International audience; The anticarcinogenic effect of garlic has been demonstrated in both epidemiologic and experimental studies. In this study, possible mechanisms involved in the anticarcinogenic effect of garlic consumption were assessed by determining its capacity to alter drug metabolizing enzymes, in relation with its alliin content. Rats were fed a diet for 2 weeks containing 5% garlic powders produced from bulbs grown on soils with different levels of sulfate fertilization and therefore containing differing amounts of alliin. Activities of several hepatic enzymes, which are important in carcinogen metabolism such cytochromes P450 (CYP) and phase II enzymes, were determined. Garlic…

Updated Field Synopsis and Systematic Meta-Analyses of Genetic Association Studies in Cutaneous Melanoma: The MelGene Database

2015

We updated a field synopsis of genetic associations of cutaneous melanoma (CM) by systematically retrieving and combining data from all studies in the field published as of August 31, 2013. Data were available from 197 studies, which included 83,343 CM cases and 187,809 controls and reported on 1,126 polymorphisms in 289 different genes. Random-effects meta-analyses of 81 eligible polymorphisms evaluated in4 data sets confirmed 20 single-nucleotide polymorphisms across 10 loci (TYR, AFG3L1P, CDK10, MYH7B, SLC45A2, MTAP, ATM, CLPTM1L, FTO, and CASP8) that have previously been published with genome-wide significant evidence for association (P5 × 10(-8)) with CM risk, with certain variants pos…

Subcomponent Self-Assembly A Quick Way to New Metallogels

2013

Subcomponent self-assembly, introduced by the Nitschke group,[1] is a process which allow complex structures to be generated from simple building blocks (generally aldehydes and amines). In this bottom-up approach, the building blocks spontaneously self-assemble around templates (usually metal ions) leading to a simultaneous covalent (C=N) and dative (N– metal) bonds formation. The method has been successfully used to construct well-defined metal-organic macrocycles, helicates, catenanes, rotaxanes, grids,[2] and cages.[3] Our field of interest lies not in building-up of defined structures but in designing gelator molecules for a formation of supramolecular gels as functional nanomaterials.…

Sulfotransferase-mediated activation of mutagens studied using heterologous expression systems

1998

Abstract Sulfation is a common final step in the biotransformation of xenobiotics and is traditionally associated with inactivation. However, the sulfate group is electron-withdrawing and may be cleaved off heterolytically in some molecules leading to electrophilic cations which may form adducts with DNA and other important cellular structures. Since endogenous sulfotransferases do not appear to be expressed in indicator cells of standard mutagenicity tests, rat and human sulfotransferases have been stably expressed in his−Salmonella typhimurium strain TA1538 and Chinese hamster V79 cells. Using these recombinant indicator cells, sulfotransferase-dependent genotoxic activities were detected…

Oral immunization with HCV-NS3-transformed Salmonella: induction of HCV-specific CTL in a transgenic mouse model.

2001

Abstract Background & Aims: The ability to induce cytotoxic T cells is considered an important feature of a candidate hepatitis C virus (HCV) vaccine. We used an oral immunization strategy with attenuated HCV-NS3–transformed Salmonella typhimurium to deliver DNA directly to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Methods: HLA-A2.1 transgenic mice were immunized once with transformed attenuated Salmonella . HCV-specific CD8 + T cells were analyzed in vitro as well as in vivo by challenge of mice with recombinant HCV-NS3 vaccinia virus. Results: Salmonella (10 8 colony-forming units; 20 μg plasmid DNA) induced cytotoxic and IFN-γ–producing CD8 + T cells specific for the immunodominant epitope NS3…

Socialização parental: adaptação ao Brasil da escala ESPA29

2011

The objective of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the ESPA29 Parental Socialization Scale (Musitu & Garcia, 2001). This scale allows measuring parental styles - authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and negligent - by means of two independent dimensions of parental conduct extracted from parents' use of different socialization practices. Using a sample of 2.105 Brazilian adolescents from 10 to 18 years old, the structure of two factors that define the scale - Acceptance/Implication and Strictness/Imposition - has been replicated using an exploratory factorial analysis. In order to complete a proper replication of the ESPA29 scale structure…

Energy Efficient Resource Allocation for Wireless Power Transfer Enabled Collaborative Mobile Clouds

2016

In order to fully enjoy high rate broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery lifetime of user equipment is critical for mobile users, especially for smartphone users. In this paper, the problem of distributing cellular data via a wireless power transfer enabled collaborative mobile cloud (WeCMC) in an energy efficient manner is investigated. WeCMC is formed by a group of users who have both functionalities of information decoding and energy harvesting, and are interested for cooperating in downloading content from the operators. Through device-to-device communications, the users inside WeCMC are able to cooperate during the downloading procedure and offload data from the base sta…

Gathering of aging and estrogen withdrawal in vascular dysfunction of senescent accelerated mice.

2010

The aim of this work was to characterize a mouse model of experimental menopause and cardiovascular aging that closely reflects menopause in women. Senescence accelerated mouse (SAM)-Resistant type 1 (SAMR1, n=30) and SAM-Prone type 8 (SAMP8, n=30) were separated at 5months of age into three groups: 1) sham-operated (Sham); 2) ovariectomized (Ovx); and 3) ovariectomized chronically-treated with estrogen (Ovx+E2). Contractile responses to KCl (60mM) and thromboxane A(2) were greater in aorta from SAMP8 mice compared with SAMR1 in all groups. Neither ovariectomy nor estrogen replacement modified the contractile responses from SAMR1 mice. Conversely, in Ovx SAMP8 the increased maximal contract…
