Small things matter : of phages and antibiotic resistance conferring plasmids

Viruses and plasmids are small units of genetic material dependent on cells either transiently or continuously. Intriguingly, stories of these small entities intertwine in antibiotic resistance crisis. Horizontal gene transfer enables bacteria to respond rapidly to chances in their environment. Anthropogenic consumption of antibiotics induces the travel of resistance encoding genes mainly as passengers of conjugative plasmids. In this thesis, I demonstrate that clinically important resistance plasmids could evolutionarily rescue susceptible bacteria under lethal antibiotic concentrations. The emergence of pathogenic bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics is a serious worldwide public health concern. Whenever antibiotics are applied, the genes encoding for antibiotic resistance are selected for within bacterial populations. This has led to the prevalence of conjugative plasmids that carry resistance genes and can transfer themselves between diverse bacterial groups. Radiokanavien imagon muodostuminen ja kuuluminen kanavien tunnuksissa

Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin sitä kuinka radiokanavien imagot muodostuvat ja kuuluvat erityisesti kanavien lyhyissä kanava- ja ohjelmatunnuksissa. Samalla vertailtiin kuinka radiokanavien omat lausunnot kanaviensa imagosta vastasivat kohderyhmänsä kuuntelijoiden mielipiteitä. Tutkittavana ikäryhmänä olivat 20!35-vuotiaat, sillä tämä ikäryhmä tuntee radiokanavien valikoiman ja tarjonnan melko hyvin, mutta ei siltikään kuulu suurimpiin radionkuuntelijaikäluokkiin. Tutkimuksessa keskityttiin kahteen radiokanavaan, mutta tutkittiin kuitenkin ilmiötä yleisemmällä tasolla. Probing the interplay of microbes and medicine in a hospital setting using an individual-based model

Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli kehittää graafisen käyttöliittymän omaava monipuolinen simulaatioympäristö, jolla voidaan mallintaa bakteerien leviämistä sairaalaympäristössä. Ohjelma mahdollistaa noin neljänkymmenen sairaalaparametrin asettamisen ja tulosten purkamisen taulukkomuotoon. Kyseisessä yksilöpohjaisessa mallissa keskitytään sairaalatyöntekijöiden ja potilaiden välisiin vuorovaikutuksiin. Työntekijät toimivat vektoreina, levittäen bakteeri-infektioita potilaiden välillä. Bakteerimallinnus yksittäisen potilaan sisällä on toteutettu matemaattisesti. Tutkielman kohteena on unten toiminta Pasi Ilmari Jääskeläisen reaalifantasiassa. Tutkimusaineistona on Kustannusyhtiö Atenan julkaisema Jääskeläisen tuotanto: novellikokoelma Taivaalta pudonnut eläintarha (2008) sekä romaanit Lumikko ja yhdeksän muuta (2006), Harjukaupungin salakäytävät (2010) ja Sielut kulkevat sateessa (2014). Unia on Jääskeläisen tuotannossa runsaasti, ja ne toimivat erilaisina kertomuksen rakenteina. Ne kuvaavat henkilöhahmoja, rakentavat kertomustensa tiloja, toimivat kerronnan tasoina sekä aikarakenteina. Unet myös rikkovat näitä rakenteita.
