Theoretical study on travelling web dynamics and instability under non-homogeneous tension

Problems of dynamics and stability of a moving web, travelling between two rollers at a constant velocity, are studied using analytical approaches. Transverse vibrations of the web are described by a partial differential equation that includes the centrifugal force, in-plane tension, elastic reaction and nonstationary inertial terms. The model of a thin elastic plate subjected to bending and non-homogeneous tension is used to describe the bending moment and the distribution of membrane forces. Poverty and Tax Exemptions in Mid-Nineteenth Century Finland

The topic of this article is the nature and social character of Finnish rural poverty during the early stages of industrialization. Specifically, I analyze households exempted from two separate taxes in order to locate and study the rural poor. Contrary to several previous considerations deeming taxation sources unreliable in poverty studies, it is shown that under controlled settings tax exemption information does display promising features. These include a high exemption percentage of households without adult male members, small average household size of the tax exempted and a clear concentration of the exemptions on the lower rural social classes. Density-Functional Theory on Graphs

The principles of density-functional theory are studied for finite lattice systems represented by graphs. Surprisingly, the fundamental Hohenberg–Kohn theorem is found void, in general, while many insights into the topological structure of the density-potential mapping can be won. We give precise conditions for a ground state to be uniquely v-representable and are able to prove that this property holds for almost all densities. A set of examples illustrates the theory and demonstrates the non-convexity of the pure-state constrained-search functional. peerReviewed
Role of calcium in the adhesion and fusion of bilayers.

The interaction forces and fusion mechanisms of mixed zwitterionic-anionic phospholipid bilayers were measured with the surface forces apparatus. The bilayers were 3:1 mixtures of either dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine and dimyristoylphosphatidylglycerol (DMPC/DMPG) or dilauroylphosphatidylcholine and dilauroylphosphatidylglycerol (DLPC/DLPG), and experiments were carried out in NaCl solutions with and without CaCl2. In NaCl solutions, the forces between either mixed bilayer system were consistent with the DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory of repulsive electrostatic and attractive van der Waals forces, and fusion did not occur. Size Dependence of Tracer Diffusion in Supercooled Liquids

We have determined by forced Rayleigh scattering the diffusion coefficients D of several photochromic tracers with van der Waals radii between 0.38 and 8 nm (the largest ones being photolabeled polystyrene micronetworks) in 10 glass-forming liquids at temperatures between the glass temperature Tg and ∼1.2Tg. The results were analyzed in terms of power law plots, D(T) ∝ T/η(T)ξ, where η is the solvent shear viscosity, and temperature shifts, D(T) ∝ T/η(T + ΔT). The shift ΔT was related with the width of the rotational correlation time distribution via the time−temperature superposition principle.

We report on the thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic properties of a recently proposed deep eutectic solvent, formed by choline acetate (ChAc) and urea (U) at the stoichiometric ratio 1:2, hereinafter indicated as ChAc:U. Although the crystalline phase melts at 36–38 °C depending on the heating rate, ChAc:U can be easily supercooled at sub-ambient conditions, thus maintaining at the liquid state, with a glass–liquid transition at about −50 °C. Density Functional Theory Study on Propane and Propene Adsorption on Pt(111) and PtSn Alloy Surfaces

Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the adsorption of propane, propene, and C and H atoms on Pt and PtSn surfaces employing the revised Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (RPBE) and vdW-DF functionals. Propane adsorption was found to be mediated by van der Waals interactions without significant site preference on any of the studied surfaces. The adsorption characteristics of propene are different: On the Pt(111) and Pt3Sn(111) surfaces, propene adsorption is covalent, and the molecule prefers a di-σ site to a π site. Alloying Pt(111) with Sn leads to weaker adsorption owing to geometric and relaxation effects, whereas electronic effects are found to be small. On the PtS…

The UV fluorescence excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra of jet-cooled p-methylaniline have been obtained for the S1←S0 transition. The main spectral bands have been assigned by comparison with those of other relevant substituted benzenes and with the help of computed vibrational frequencies. The structure of p-methylaniline in both the S0 and S1 states has been studied at ab initio quantum chemical calculations at MP2 and CIS levels of theory using the 6-31+G∗ basis sets. Translational and rotational molecular motion in supercooled liquids studied by NMR and forced Rayleigh scattering

It has been shown that translational diffusion coefficients, Dt, in the supercooled van der Waals liquids, orthoterphenyl, phenolphthaleindimethylether, and salol, have a weaker temperature dependence than the shear viscosity, η, at T ≲ 1.2Tg and can be described by Dt ∼ η−χ with χ < 1 whereas Dr ∼ η−1 applies for the mean rotational diffusion coefficients, Dr, down to the glass transition temperature, Tg. This apparent decoupling of translational and rotational motion has been discussed in relation with possible anomalous short time diffusion, spatial heterogeneity, and cooperative molecular motions close to Tg.
