How do community development activities affect the construction of rural places? : A case study from Finland
2019
Community‐based development practices have been seen as the prevailing paradigm for rural development. Rural community development practices are employed especially through local non‐governmental organisations, such as village associations, to ensure that rural communities are vital and attractive places to live. In this article, we explore how community development practices affect and shape rural places. The data were collected in three Finnish villages that each have an active village association and that have adopted community development practices as their method of keeping their village viable. According to the results of our study, the impacts of community practices on rural places c…
Īpašuma apdrošināšanas analīze
2016
Bakalaura darbs „Īpašuma apdrošināšanas analīze” tiek izstrādāts, lai izpētītu īpašuma apdrošināšanas bruto parakstītās prēmijas un izmaksāto atlīdzību apmēru Latvijas apdrošināšanas tirgū, laika periodā no 2011. gada – 2015. gadam. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir uz īpašuma apdrošināšanas veiktās analīzes pamata, sniegt priekšlikumus īpašuma apdrošināšanas pilnveidošanai. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no trīs nodaļām un apakšnodaļām. Pirmā nodaļa sastāv no teorētiskām zināšanām par apdrošināšanas tirgus būtību, vēsturi, attīstību un apdrošināšanas pamatprincipiem. Otrā nodaļa sastāv no darba autores veiktās analīzes par īpašuma apdrošināšanas darbības rādītājiem, Latvijas apdrošināšanas tirgū, laika pe…
Electrical-optical characterization of multijunction solar cells under 2000X concentration
2014
In the framework of the FAE "Fotovoltaico ad Alta Efficienza" ("High Efficiency Photovoltaic") Research Project (PO FESR Sicilia 2007/2013 4.1.1.1), we have performed electrical and optical characterizations of commercial InGaP/InGaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells (1 cm2) mounted on a prototype HCPV module, installed in Palermo (Italy). This system uses a reflective optics based on rectangular off-axis parabolic mirror with aperture 45×45 cm2 leading to a geometrical concentration ratio of 2025. In this study, we report the I-V curve measured under incident power of about 700 W/m2 resulting in an electrical power at maximum point (PMP) of 41.4 W. We also investigated the optical properties…
Discovering and creating business opportunities for cloud services
2016
This study focuses on how the opportunities for cloud services are detected. The study develops a framework to detect and exploit cloud-based opportunities. This study incorporates entrepreneurship theories to extend and enrich IS research. Cloud computing provides new business opportunities for firms selling or using cloud services. However, little is known about how software firms detect and exploit these opportunities. Based on in-depth qualitative case studies, this study identified two different pathways followed by software firms when they detect and exploit opportunities. In the first pathway, the opportunity is based on an existing problem and need in the market. In the case firms, th…

Rural livelihood diversification: a solution for poverty in the post‐Soviet rural Baltic states?
2019
This article analyses rural livelihood diversification through a longitudinal follow‐up survey, that targets former collective farm workers in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It argues, that between 1995 and 2010 the former collective farm workers employed three distinct livelihood diversification strategies in order to create their living. A wage‐based livelihood diversification strategy, which does not include any agricultural practices, was more common among the better‐off households. A farm‐based livelihood diversification strategy, which does not rely on salaries, was more often employed by the poor. A mixed strategy, that combines both wage income and farm activities, was used by both …
The resilience of rural Ethiopian livelihoods : a case study from Hararghe zone, Eastern Ethiopia
2011
The purpose of this thesis was to examine the resilience and sustainability of rural Ethiopian livelihoods. The resilience and sustainability of livelihoods were studied in framework of food security. Preventing, coping and recovering from the shocks and stresses, in this case from drought and food insecurity, form an essential part of resilience and sustainability and therefore preventing and coping strategies were emphasized in this study. Also the effectiveness of the external aid was touched in empirical data because of its essential existence in the studied villages. The empirical data was gathered by interviewing people living in six rural villages in Hararghe zone, Eastern Ethiopia. …
On the Metageography of Euro-Asia
2011
[Introduction] The main purpose of this article is to try to understand from a long historical perspective the changes taking place in our understanding of the concept of Asia within the larger geopolitical entity of Eurasia. Even the most omphalopsychotic European researchers cannot by now have failed to recognize that something is happening in Asia, that “Asia is rising” and moving forward with great developmental energy.1 This economy based perspective towards Asia is nowadays a commonplace, and there is no point in going once again through the statistics here. Instead, I try to take a look at the metageographical assumptions that we have when we discuss Asia as a geopolitical phenomenon…

Why Does Cultural Diversity Foster Technology-enabled Intergenerational Collaboration?
2019
Globalization and information technology enable people to join the movement of global citizenship and work without borders. However, different type of barriers existed that could affect collaboration in todays work environment, in which different generations are involved. Although researchers have identified several technical barriers to intergenerational collaboration (iGOAL), the influence of cultural diversity on iGOAL has rarely been studied. Therefore, using a quantitative study approach, this paper investigates the impact of differences in cultural background on perceived technical and operational barriers to iGOAL. Our study reveals six barriers to IGC that are perceived differently …
