Losing a Job and (Dis)incentives to Move

Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan työpaikan menettämisen ja muiden taloudellisten ja ei-taloudellisten kannustimien vaikutuksia alueelliseen muuttoliikkeeseen. Käytämme yhdistettyä työnantaja-työntekijäaineistoa sekä tietoja alueellisista asuntomarkkinoista. Työpaikan menettäneillä tarkoitamme heitä, jotka menettävät työpaikkansa toimipaikan sulkemisen tai joukkoirtisanomisen takia. Työpaikan menetys lisää henkilön muuttoalttiutta noin 80 prosentilla. Työpaikan menettäneet näyttäisivätkin reagoivan taloudellisiin kannustimiin, sillä alhainen oletettu palkkataso ja korkeat asuntojen hinnat alueella ovat yhteydessä lisääntyneeseen muuttoalttiuteen alueelta, josta henkilö on jäänyt työttömäksi…

Do People Follow Jobs of Do Jobs Follow People? : The Case of Finland in an International Context

Traditionally, people are believed to follow jobs; however, a contradictory view that jobs follow people has also gained popularity. In this study, two methods are used to analyze regional growth processes in Finland between 1990 and 2010, and the results are compared with the findings obtained elsewhere. In accordance with the results from many countries, the conventional regional adjustment model shows that people have largely followed jobs in Finland, i.e., that regional growth is demand induced. Analysoin artikkelissani maaseutuväestön liikkuvuutta 1840-luvun aikana kahdessa maaseutupitäjässä: Hämäläisessä Hollolassa ja karjalaisessa Jaakkimassa. Lähdeaineistona toimivat niin kutsutut annettujen todistusten diaarit, joihin papit kirjasivat muistiin heiltä pyydetyt erilaiset todistukset. Lähdeaineisto antaa kuitenkin vain tilaisuuden hahmottaa liikkuvuuden rajoja, sillä kirkon hallintoarkistoon kuuluvia annettujen todistusten diaareja ei ole pidetty tai säilynyt kovinkaan monesta seurakunnasta. Anders Hellant was a versatile Swedish amateur scientist whose figure dominated eighteenth century intellectual life in Tornio, his little home town of some 500 inhabitants at the mouth of the Tornio river. My study is mainly based on the biographies published in Finnish (Bostr¨om 1918) and in Swedish (Tob´e 1991) but I have also consulted some original sources in Paris and in Stockholm. Hellant incarnated almost all by himself the inquiring scientific spirit of the Age of Enlightenment in Swedish Lapland. There is much to be said about his life and works, but here I focus on his observations of the Venus passages in 1761 and 1769. peerReviewed

Walking, physical activity and life-space mobility among older people

Autonomy in mobility is a central component of active ageing. Life-space mobility describes where, when, and how an individual reaches desired destinations. Walking, an important form of physical activity among older people, is a prerequisite for engaging in daily activities. This study explored the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between physical activity and life-space mobility. The associations of walking with reasons for going outdoors in different life-space areas, living arrangements, and environmental barriers to mobility were also examined. Identity construction in ELF contexts: a case study of Finnish engineering students working in Germany

This paper explores connections between identity and language use in lingua franca contexts by investigating identity construction among Finnish users of English as revealed in interviews conducted both before and after a period spent in Germany. The focus is on the users' own stories of their language use and learning, and on the discursive construction of identities. The study draws on poststructuralist theories of identity construction, combining them with research that focuses on language learners' identity construction or on identity issues in contexts with English as a lingua franca.
