Barriers and wellbeing-oriented enablers of intergenerational innovation in the digital age
2021
AbstractSo far, researchers have used a wellbeing-centered approach to catalyze successful intergenerational collaboration (IGC) in innovative activities. However, due to the subject’s multidisciplinary nature, there is still a dearth of comprehensive research devoted to constructing the IGC system. Thus, the purpose of this study is to fill a research void by providing a conceptual framework for information technology (IT) system designers to use as a jumping-off point for designing an IGC system with a wellbeing-oriented design. A systematic literature study was conducted to identify relevant terms and develop a conceptual framework based on a review of 75 selected scientific papers. The …
Designing knowledge construction in pre-service teachers’ collaborative planning talk
2022
In this paper, we report on a qualitative study of student teachers’ collaboration in planning and implementing a course that integrated physics and the Finnish language. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews were examined using qualitative content analysis, first, to discover what kind of space for knowledge construction student teachers designed for learners and, second, to identify the characteristics of their collaboration in developing a new cross-disciplinary pedagogical practice. The analysis revealed challenges in integrating meaning-making resources for knowledge construction; especially the role of language remained mostly invisible. This indicates a need to develop teac…
Challenges and trends in comparative higher education: an editorial
2013
[Introduction] International comparative higher education research has proliferated since its institutionalization as an interdisciplinary field in the 1960s and 1970s (Jarausch 1985) and has gained special momentum in the 1990s (Teichler 1996). On the one hand, the benefits of comparative research approaches in international higher education have been repeatedly emphasized (Altbach and Kelly 1985; Teichler 1996; Rhoades 2001). These include, for example, increasing the capacity to generalize about a greater number of units under analysis, the capacity of a systematic comparison to illuminate the dynamics of a particular system better than a single-system study as well as highlighting knowl…
Organisational Drivers and Challenges in Circular Economy Implementation : An Issue Life Cycle Approach
2022
Business is a significant cause of various global sustainability challenges addressed by the Circular Economy (CE), making companies instrumental in the transition from a linear economic model to a circular one. While drivers and challenges in corporate CE implementation have been researched on an organisational level, a more detailed understanding is needed regarding their contextual nature and interplay with the evolution of CE implementation in a company. Utilising issue life cycle theory, this study contributes to the literature on CE implementation in business by displaying differences in corporate CE implementation drivers and challenges, relating to the time since starting, and the …

Staff Members’ Professional Agency within the Staff Community and the Education Policies: Supporting Integration in Multicultural and Multiling…
2022
In recent decades, increased diversity and migration have challenged school staff members’ ways of working. This study aimed to identify the challenges faced by Finnish school staff in supporting students with migrant backgrounds, and to elaborate on how they enact professional agency toward these challenges. The data consist of 15 thematic interviews with staff members across various work positions in two Finnish lower secondary schools. Based on thematic analysis, the challenges within the staff community and the education policies were found to include the following: (1) the diversification of students makes tensions more visible in the staff community, and (2) inflexible education polic…
Examining Competing Entrepreneurial Concerns in a Social Question and Answer (SQA) Platform
2021
This study aims to determine the competing concerns of people interested in startup development and entrepreneurship by using topic modeling and sentiment analysis on a social question-and-answer (SQA) website. Understanding the underlying concerns of startup entrepreneurs is critical to society and economic growth. Therefore, greater scientific support for entrepreneurship remains necessary, including data mining from virtual social communities. In this study, an SQA platform was used to identify the sentiment of thirty concerns of people interested in startup entrepreneurship. Based on topic modeling and sentiment analysis of 18819 inquiries in various forums on an SQA, we identified addi…
Alkuorientaatio koronan keskellä : alkukeitoksen avulla kemian opintoihin kiinni
2021
Korkeakouluopintojen merkityksellinen aloitus antaa suuntaa niiden yleiselle sujuvuudelle. Yliopistojen alkuorientaatioviikoilla tai -kursseilla on täten suuri merkitys opintoihin integroitumiselle ja myös niiden jatkuvuudelle. Jyväskylän yliopiston kemian laitoksella alkuorientaatio on vuodesta 2007 lähtien järjestetty kahden opintopisteen arvoisena kemian perusopintokokonaisuuteen sisältyvänä Alkukeitos-kurssina. Kurssin tavoitteena on tukea kemian opiskelijoiden opintojen sujuvaa aloitusta ja opintoihin sitoutumista. Syksyllä 2020 Alkukeitos-kurssin järjestäminen aiheutti haasteita vallitsevan koronatilanteen vuoksi. Kurssin korona-ajan toimintamallin toimivuutta arvioitiin palautekeskus…
Schools Went Online Over One Weekend – Opportunities and Challenges for Online Education Related to the COVID-19 Crisis
2020
This study aims to further the understanding of the opportunities and challenges for online education from the perspective of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. The situation was unique in many ways, as the migration from traditional to online education was very rapid and forced by situational circumstances. However, it also had the potential to foster organizational change in the use of online education in a way that has never been seen before. A literature review was used to explore the opportunities and challenges for online education, and the results are discussed in connection with the COVID-19 crisis. The study identified nine opportunities and nine challenges for online edu…
