Selective Activation of Trophoblast-specific PLAC1 in Breast Cancer by CCAAT/Enhancer-binding Protein β (C/EBPβ) Isoform 2
2009
The trophoblast-specific gene PLAC1 (placenta-specific 1) is ectopically expressed in a wide range of human malignancies, most frequently in breast cancer, and is essentially involved in cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Here we show that basal activity of the PLAC1 promoter is selectively controlled by ubiquitous transcription factor SP1 and isoform 2 of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta that we found to be selectively expressed in placental tissue and cancer cells. Binding of both factors to their respective elements within the PLAC1 promoter was essential to attain full promoter activity. Estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) signaling further augmented transcription and …
Use of Calcined Dolomite as Chemical Precipitant in the Simultaneous Removal of Ammonium and Phosphate from Synthetic Wastewater and from Agricultura…
2019
Phosphorus as phosphate and nitrogen as ammonium or nitrate are the main nutrients in wastewaters and agricultural sludges. They runoff easily to waterways and cause eutrophication in water bodies. However, ammonium and phosphate could be precipitated simultaneously and used as recycled nutrients. In this research, dolomite calcined at 650 °
Parameter identification for heterogeneous materials by optimal control approach with flux cost functionals
2021
The paper deals with the identification of material parameters characterizing components in heterogeneous geocomposites provided that the interfaces separating different materials are known. We use the optimal control approach with flux type cost functionals. Since solutions to the respective state problems are not regular, in general, the original cost functionals are expressed in terms of integrals over the computational domain using the Green formula. We prove the existence of solutions to the optimal control problem and establish convergence results for appropriately defined discretizations. The rest of the paper is devoted to computational aspects, in particular how to handle high sens…
Omission of Quality Software Development Practices : A Systematic Literature Review
2018
Software deficiencies are minimized by utilizing recommended software development and quality assurance practices. However, these recommended practices (i.e., quality practices) become ineffective if software professionals purposefully ignore them. Conducting a systematic literature review (n = 4,838), we discovered that only a small number of previous studies, within software engineering and information systems literature, have investigated the omission of quality practices. These studies explain the omission of quality practices mainly as a result of organizational decisions and trade-offs made under resource constraints or market pressure. However, our study indicates that different aspe…
How pedagogical agents communicate with students: A two-phase systematic review
2022
Technological advancements have improved the capabilities of pedagogical agents to communicate with students. However, an increased use of pedagogical agents in learning environments calls for a deeper understanding of student–agent communication to assess the effectiveness of pedagogical agents in learning. This study is a two-phase systematic review of scientific papers on pedagogical agent communication research published between 2010 and 2020, including review papers and original research papers. In the first phase, this study analyses literature reviews and meta-analyses to find the status and research gaps. The findings indicate that pedagogical agents' characteristics and impact on l…
Shall we follow? Impact of reputation concern on information security managers’ investment decisions
2020
Information security (infosec) is important for organizations. While budgeting for infosec is a crucial resource allocation decision, infosec managers may choose to follow other fellow experts’ recommendations or baseline practices. The present paper uses reputational herding theory to explain the decision made by infosec managers to use a “let's follow others” strategy in this context. Based on a sample of 106 organizations in Finland, we find that infosec managers’ ability to accurately predict the benefit of infosec investment, as well as their reputations, have significant effects on motivating them to discount their own information. Infosec managers’ discounting of their own informatio…
Korpusavusteinen diskurssintutkimus (CADS): analyysiesimerkki homouden ja heterouden digitaalisista diskursseista
2018
The article aims at combining two methodological approaches, namely corpus linguistics and discourse studies. Both of these approaches are present in corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) which makes use of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. First, an attempt is made to discuss the differences and similarities of these two traditions based on Leech’s (2000) listing. However, it turns out that this listing does not include all necessary viewpoints, and those are further discussed. In the empirical section of the paper, the Suomi24 corpus is analysed in order to provide an example of CADS. The analysis was carried out through collocation and discourse prosody analyses. The re…
Plenty of big projections imply big pieces of Lipschitz graphs
2020
I prove that a closed $n$-regular set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ with plenty of big projections has big pieces of Lipschitz graphs. This answers a question of David and Semmes.
Cosmic perturbation theory and inflation
2015
Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa olen käynyt läpi yhden skalaarikentän synnyttämän kosmisen inflaation teoriaa. Tätä varten olen opiskellut kosmista häiriöteoriaa joka tutkii Friedmann-Robertson-Walker -avaruusajan ympärille kehitettyjen häiriöiden kehitystä inflaation aikana. Kosmiset häiriöt riippuvat mitan valinnasta, joten olen esitellyt hyvin tunnetut mittainvariantit muuttujat, Mukhanovin-Sasakin muuttujan q sekä mukanaliikkuvan kaarevuushäiriön R. Lasken skalaari- ja tensorihäiriöiden tehospektrit sekä relevantit spektriparametrit. Lopuksi käyn läpi kaksi yksinkertaista esimerkkiä, potenssilaki-inflaatio sekä Higgs-inflaatio. In this thesis I have reviewed the basic theory of single sca…
Eight Simple Guidelines for Improved Understanding of Transformations and Nonlinear Effects
2021
Jyväskylästä kirjoitettiin: Käyn läpi Extra-Vipusessa ristiriitaisiksi luokitettuja yhteisjulkaisuja. Julkaisu " Eight Simple Guidelines for Improved Understanding of Transformations and Nonlinear Effects" on meillä laitettu A2 ja teillä A1. Meillä varmaan päädytty tuohon A2:een kun tiivistelmässä sanotaan "Building on a systematic review of six leading management journals..". Mutta mitä mieltä olette, kumpi olisi parempi? Transforming variables before analysis or applying a transformation as a part of a generalized linear model are common practices in organizational research. Several methodological articles addressing the topic, either directly or indirectly, have been published in the rec…
