More similarities than differences among elite music students in jazz, folk music and classical genre – Personality, practice habits, and self-rated …

2009

The aim of the study was to investigate a) if music students have a unique personality profile, and b) if music students in different genres differ in practice habits and musical self-image. Participants were music students in different music genres (n=96; jazz n=31, folk music n=33, classical genre n=32) from two conservatories in Sweden. Results indicated that music students differed significantly from students in psychology on agreeableness and openness. Students in classical genre practiced significantly more hours per week than students in jazz and folk music. Students in folk music practiced the most days per week in ensemble outside the school curriculum. A thematic analysis followed…

Controllable morphology of flux avalanches in microstructured superconductors

2014

The morphology of abrupt bursts of magnetic flux into superconducting films with engineered periodic pinning centers (antidots) has been investigated. Guided flux avalanches of thermomagnetic origin develop a tree-like structure, with the main trunk perpendicular to the borders of the sample, while secondary branches follow well-defi ned directions determined by the geometrical details of the underlying periodic pinning landscape. Strikingly, we demonstrate that in a superconductor with relatively weak random pinning, the morphology of such flux avalanches can be fully controlled by proper combinations of lattice symmetry and antidot geometry. Moreover, the resulting flux patterns can be re…

Peripersonal Visuospatial Abilities in Williams Syndrome Analyzed by a Table Radial Arm Maze Task

2020

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic deletion syndrome characterized by severe visuospatial deficits affecting spatial exploration and navigation abilities in extra-personal space. To date, little is known about spatial elaboration and reaching abilities in the peripersonal space in individuals with WS. The present study is aimed at evaluating the visuospatial abilities in individuals with WS and comparing their performances with those of mental age-matched typically developing (TD) children by using a highly sensitive ecological version of the Radial Arm Maze (table RAM). We evaluated 15 individuals with WS and 15 TD children in two different table RAM paradigms: the free-choice paradigm, ma…

Confident, cautiously confident or concerned? Working life profiles, capabilities, and expectations for work-family reconciliation among young Finnis…

2022

The uncertainties and growing social inequality young adults face in the labour market call for research on the link between young women’s expectations about working life and the real options they have in seeking to combine work with care. Drawing on Sen’s capabilities approach, this study contributes to filling this gap in the literature by examining how women in emerging adulthood in Finland foresee their future career and working life, and how these expectations are associated with socioeconomic and partnership characteristics and their expectations for work-family reconciliation. Survey data obtained from 527 young women aged 18–29 were analysed using latent profile analysis. Three dist…

Towards an understanding of big data analytics as a weapon for competitive performance

2017

Master's thesis Information Systems IS501 - University of Agder 2017 Context: Big data has in the recent years been an area of interest among innovative organizations and has started to become a major priority for organizations in general, either through their own big data departments or by purchasing big data analyses from suppliers. Big data analytics means more knowledge from more data sources and is by many prophesied to be a contributing source of big change in how organizations receive their intelligence. Purpose: This thesis investigates the connection between big data and competitive performance. This connection could be explained through the following two paths; 1) how big data ana…

A Register Study Suggesting Homotypic and Heterotypic Comorbidity Among Individuals With Learning Disabilities

2023

The present study examined whether learning disabilities (LD) in reading and/or math (i.e., reading disability [RD], math disability [MD], and RD+MD) co-occur with other diagnoses. The data comprised a clinical sample (n= 430) with LD identified in childhood and a sample of matched controls (n= 2,140). Their medical diagnoses (according to the International Classification of Diseases nosology) until adulthood (20–39 years) were analyzed. The co-occurrence of LD with neurodevelopmental disorders was considered a homotypic comorbidity, and co-occurrence with disorders or diseases from the other diagnostic categories (i.e., mental and behavioral disorders, diseases of the nervous system, injur…

Signal processing in photonic crystals and nanostructures

2006

International audience; Optical devices employing photonic crystals and novel nanostructure materials may exhibit useful properties for applications to all-optical signal processing. In this work we analyze as a first example four-wave mixing of polarized beams in photonic crystal fibers. We show that by properly tuning the pump wavelength and the linear dispersion properties of the fiber one may obtain broadband parametric amplification and frequency conversion. Next we consider the in-line periodic amplification of short optical pulses by means of quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers. We show by numerical simulations that pattern-free amplification of a 40 Gbit/s soliton signal at…

Organizational culture as a primary driver for utilizing big data analytics in organizations

2019

Master's thesis Information Systems IS501 - University of Agder 2019 Context:During this last decade we have witnessed a wave of digital disruption, where big data has had a central part. This has gotten many organizations to pay attention and investing in analytic tools for big data. Big data analytics can provide organizations with more knowledge from more data sources that can have a big impact on how organizations act. Many of the organizations that have purchased big data analytics have failed to derive benefits from it and this is demonstratedin the literature. Organizational culture is mentioned as being an important part of achieving success when adopting big data.Purpose: The purpo…
