Visceral adiposity index and exercise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: authors’ reply
2012
We thank Prof. Filik for his interest in our recent article. 2 He points to the fact that the interpretation of our results could be affected by lack of data on physical activity and diet. In response to this issue, we are aware that both physical activity and diet are able to affect not only anthropometric and metabolic parameters of visceral adiposity index (VAI) but also the severity of liver disease. Unfortunately, data on both physical activity and diet in our patients with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are not available, even if we are confident that their variations should not significantly affect our results. In fact, in our study, we evaluated histological…
Diagnosis, phenotype, and prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome.
2006
New diagnostic criteria for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) suggested three main phenotypes: classic (hyperandrogenism and anovulation), ovulatory, and normoandrogenic. However, it is unclear whether the normoandrogenic phenotype actually represents PCOS. Overall, 6% to 8% of reproductive-aged women suffer from PCOS, making this disorder one of the most common endocrine abnormalities.
Biochemical and histological alterations of cellular metabolism from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) by 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid: Effects on d-3-hy…
2007
?; International audience; 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4D) is one of the widely used herbicide of the phenoxy family with possible startling number of adverse effects on species other than the weeds which is designed to kill. The effects of 2,4D were investigated in jerboa (Jaculus orientalis), a wild animal of subdesert highlands. The jerboas have been daily treated intraperitonally with 2,4D 3 mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks. Plasmatic markers, and antioxidants defences systems were assessed and histological alterations were evaluated. The in vivo and in vitro effects of 2,4D on the mitochondrial D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) were also determined. Our results showed a strong…
Improvement of quality of life during treatment with anabolic therapy: Results of a multicenter study
2012
Efficacy and safety of daily treatment with parathyroid hormone were evaluated in a typical Italian population with severe post-menopausal osteoporosis eligible to anabolic treatment (Nota 79 AIFA). Materials and methods: 204 ambulatory female patients (median age: 72.6±8.3 years; height: 155.3±6.5 cm; weight: 61.1±11.9 Kg) with severe post-menopausal osteoporosis have been enrolled in this study accordingly to summary of product characteristics and Italian reimbursement criteria for osteoporosis drugs (Nota 79 AIFA), between January 2008 and April 2009 (Last Patient Out: October 2010). 146 (71.57%) out of these patients completed the study.6 visits were planned in the study protocol: basel…
The Val432Leu polymorphism of the CYP1B1 gene is associated with differences in estrogen metabolism and bone density.
2009
Polymorphisms of the CYP450 genes that encode for the enzymes that metabolize estrogen are linked to hormone-related cancers. We investigated the impact of two polymorphisms of the CYP1B1 gene previously reported to be associated with hormone-related disorders on estrogen metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD), another hormone-dependent condition, in women from different ethnic backgrounds. Four hundred sixty-eight postmenopausal Caucasian women, 220 from St. Louis, MO, USA (mean age=63.5+/-0.53 years) and 248 from Palermo, Italy (mean age=72.9+/-0.44 years) participated in the study. Measurements of urinary estrogen metabolites by enzyme-linked immunoassay, serum estradiol by ultrasensi…
Effects of polymorphisms of the sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) gene on free estradiol and bone mineral density.
2009
Polymorphisms of the sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) gene are associated with differences in SHBG levels, influencing the risk for breast cancer and polycystic ovarian syndrome, but no association has been reported for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. To determine the effect of G to A substitution in the 5'UTR (rs1799941) and the Asp356Asn (rs6259) polymorphisms of the SHBG gene on bone mineral density (BMD).This is a cross-sectional study in a university-based research center from May, 2002 to December, 2007. A total of two hundred and thirteen healthy postmenopausal Caucasian womenor = 1 year from last menstrual period participated to this study. Serum estradiol by ultrasensitive …
Change in bone mass distribution induced by hormone replacement therapy and high-impact physical exercise in post-menopausal women.
2002
The purpose of this intervention trial was to determine whether changes in bone mass distribution could be observed in postmenopausal women following hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and/or high-impact physical exercise. Eighty healthy women, aged 50-57 years, at5 years after the onset of menopause and with no previous use of HRT, were randomly assigned to one of four groups: HRT; exercise (Ex); HRT + Ex (ExHRT); and control (Co). HRT administration was conducted in a double-blind manner for 1 year using estradiol plus noretisterone acetate (Kliogest). The exercise groups participated in a 1 year progressive training program consisting of jumping and bounding activities. Subjects participa…
Effect of alendronate and exercise on bone and physical performance of postmenopausal women: a randomized controlled trial.
2003
In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-month trial we evaluated effects of weight- bearing jumping exercise and oral alendronate, alone or in combination, on the mass and structure of bone, risk factors for falling (muscle strength and power, postural sway, and dynamic balance), and cardiorespiratory fitness in postmenopausal women. A total of 164 healthy, sedentary, early postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to one of four experimental groups: (1) 5 mg of alendronate daily plus progressive jumping exercise, (2) 5 mg alendronate, (3) placebo plus progressive jumping exercise, or (4) placebo. The primary endpoint was 12-month change in bone mass and geometry (measured…

Distribution of osteonectin mRNA and protein during human embryonic and fetal development.
1992
We investigated the temporal and spatial distribution of osteonectin during human embryonic and fetal development, using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Osteonectin gene expression was generally found in cells exhibiting high rates of matrix production/proliferation. In mineralized tissue, a strong signal was obtained in osteoblasts, odontoblasts, and chondrocytes of the upper hypertrophic and proliferative zones. Chondrocytes of the mineralized zone showed no expression throughout the different stages of development. Strong osteonectin expression was found in odontoblasts of developing teeth. In addition, osteonectin mRNA and protein were detected in several non-mineralize…
