Influence of Metabolic Control on Thromboxane Biosynthesis and Plasma Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor Type-1 in Non-insulin-dependent Diabetes mellit…

1996

SummaryWe have previously shown that tight metabolic control by insulin therapy reduced thromboxane-dependent platelet activation in noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients. The present study was undertaken to determine whether a similar effect could be obtained without switching diabetics in secondary failure to insulin treatment. For this purpose, we gave strict diet and exercise advise program and adjusted on a weekly basis the oral antidiabetic therapy (glipizide) that 26 patients with NIDDM had been given over the previous months.Basal measurements of urinary ll-dehydro-TXB2 and PAI-1 confirmed previous findings of enhanced levels of these parameters in NIDDM patients w…

2019

Background Endothelial dysfunction is a consequence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but it is unclear whether endothelial dysfunction of conductance versus resistance vessels may also precede type 2 diabetes mellitus development. Methods and Results In a population‐based cohort of 15 010 individuals from the GHS (Gutenberg Health Study) (aged 35–74 years at enrollment in 2007–2012), we identified 1610 cases of incident pre–diabetes mellitus and 386 cases of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus by hemoglobin A 1c (HbA 1c ) and/or medical history between 2012 and 2017. Endothelial function of conductance and resistance vessels was measured by flow‐mediated dilation and digital volume plethysmograp…

[Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (Grönblad-Strandberg syndrome) and rheumatoid arthritis].

1990

A 72-year-old woman, not previously known to have coronary heart disease, was admitted to hospital with an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction. The history revealed that, when about 40 years of age, a coarse skin-fold and yellowish-white xanthoma-like efflorescences had been noted around her umbilicus, the inguinal regions and axillae. These changes subsequently developed into a pathognomonic picture of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PE), which was a significant factor in the myocardial infarction. At the age of 69 years, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), stage II after Steinbrocker, had been diagnosed on the basis of morning stiffness, symmetrical arthritis in more than three joint regions and t…

Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Children after Continent Urinary Diversion by Mainz Pouch Technique

2010

Purpose MAINZ pouch I urinary diversion provides a high-capacity, low-pressure reservoir. The use of terminal ileum can cause a decrease of vitamin B12 levels. Symptoms caused by vitamin B12 deficiency are rare, but some are irreversible, therefore annual check-ups are recommended. In this study the vitamin B12 levels in the above patients were analyzed in retrospect. Material and Methods The ileocecal segment was used for urinary tract reconstruction in > 80 children ≤17 years of age. B12 levels were determined at various time points within up to 21 years after surgery in 63 patients (8 with ileocecal bladder substitution, 55 continent cutaneous diversion). B12 values below 200pg/ml were c…

Avances en el tratamiento de la hipercolesterolemia

2010

Advances in cholesterol-lowering interventions Abstract Numerous epidemiological and prospective studies have shown a direct relationship between total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and cardio- vascular disease (cardiovascular morbidity and mortality). In many intervention studies with more than 100,000 subjects, statins have shown a powerful and significant reduction of cardiovascular events and a decrease in cardiovascular and overall mortality, far superior to those produced by any other lipid-lowering group.

Exergames on Line for Childhood Obesity: Using a Web Platform as an Ambulatory Program to Increase the Acceptance and Adherence to Physical Activity …

2016

Many initiatives exist to promote physical activity (PA) in children but dropouts are a very common outcome. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are considered as useful tools to promote adherence in PA. This study analyzes the acceptance and adherence of an Internet-based exergame (MOVE-IT) to promote PA compared to a non-technological ambulatory intervention (NTI). The role of clinicians support is also analyzed. Thirty one obese children (9–15 aged) were asked to do an exercise routine (3 times/week along 3 months), using a pamphlet (NTI) or MOVE-IT web. In addition, MOVE-IT participants were divided into two groups, with and without (S-EBW/NS-EBW) weekly support. Results s…

Early Cessation of a Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) Outbreak in a Hematology-Oncology Department after Implementation of an Enhanced Infectio…

2004

Abstract Introduction: Worldwide, the incidence of nosocomial outbreaks of VRE has increased especially in high-risk patients such as hematology-oncology patients. Outbreaks reported so far, required a minimum of three months to be controlled. Such outbreaks have a serious impact on daily care and treatment of the patients and hospital economics. Patients and Methods: We describe the outcome of a VRE-outbreak in a department with 48 beds (fourteen 2-patient rooms, and 20 single-patient rooms) including allogeneic BMT. Epidemiological evaluation was initiated after two patients in the department for the first time had a blood stream infection (BSI) with VRE within one week. Two goals had to …

Relative Prevalence of Different Androgen Excess Disorders in 950 Women Referred because of Clinical Hyperandrogenism

2006

Context: We undertook this study to estimate the prevalence of the various androgen excess disorders using the new criteria suggested for the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Setting: The study was performed at two endocrine departments at the University of Palermo (Palermo, Italy). Patients: The records of all patients referred between 1980 and 2004 for evaluation of clinical hyperandrogenism were reevaluated. All past diagnoses were reviewed using the actual diagnostic criteria. To be included in this study, the records of the patients had to present the following available data: clinical evaluation of hyperandrogenism, body weight and height, testosterone (T), free T, dehyd…

The Burden Endured by Caregivers of Patients With Morquio A Syndrome: Results From an International Patient-Reported Outcomes Survey

2019

Abstract This international survey performed by direct personal interview or mail evaluated the global burden among primary caregivers of patients with Morquio A syndrome. Collected outcomes included self-reported time spent on caregiving, proportion of daily activities (from the Mucopolysaccharidosis Health Assessment Questionnaire) requiring caregiver assistance, and how the patient’s age and wheelchair use affect these. In addition, the impact of caregiving on the caregivers’ relationship with family and friends, physical and mental health, and employment status and income was evaluated. Caregiver burden increased with disease progression. Adult patients always using a wheelchair require…

Measuring the Effects of Sharing Mobile Health Data During Diabetes Consultations: Protocol for a Mixed Method Study

2020

Background There is rising demand for health care’s limited resources. Mobile health (mHealth) could be a solution, especially for those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes. mHealth can increases patients’ options to self-manage their health, improving their health knowledge, engagement, and capacity to contribute to their own care decisions. However, there are few solutions for sharing and presenting patients’ mHealth data with health care providers (HCPs) in a mutually understandable way, which limits the potential of shared decision making. Objective Through a six-month mixed method feasibility study in Norway, we aim to explore the impacts that a system for sharing patient-gathered…
