Accelerometer-based osteogenic indices, moderate-to-vigorous and vigorous physical activity, and bone traits in adolescents

2022

Objectives: We investigated the associations of accelerometry-derived osteogenic indices (OIs), moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA), and vigorous intensity physical activity (VPA) with peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pCQT) parameters in 99 adolescents aged 10–13 years. Methods: Bone parameters were assessed at the distal (4%) and shaft (66%) of the tibia using pQCT. Accelerometers were worn on the right hip for 7 consecutive days. OIs were calculated based on acceleration peak histograms either using all of the peaks (OI) or peaks with acceleration ≥5.2 g (HOI). MVPA and VPA were defined using previously published cut-points. Results: HOI was positively associated with total area (Part…

Use of accelerometers and gyros for hip and knee angle estimation

2013

In this paper a wearable sensor system, consisting of accelerometers and gyros, has been studied to estimate hip and knee angles. The proposed algorithm, developed in order to avoid the error accumulation due to gyroscopes drift, has been tested on angle measurement of the hip and knee of a commercial device for assisted gait. The results have shown a good accuracy of the angles estimation, also in high angle rate movement

Characterization of MEMS accelerometer self-noise by means of PSD and Allan Variance analysis

2017

In this paper, we have studied the sources of error of a low-cost 3-axis MEMS accelerometer by means of Power Spectral Density and Allan Variance techniques. These techniques were applied to the signals acquired from ten identical devices to characterize the variability of the sensor produced by the same manufacturer. Our analysis showed as identically produced accelerometer have somehow variable behavior in particular at low frequency. It is therefore of paramount importance before their use in Inertial Navigation or Earthquakes Monitoring System, a complete characterization of each single sensors.

Inpatient Step Counts, Symptom Severity, and Perceived Health Status After Lung Resection Surgery.

2020

BACKGROUND The clinical relevance of inpatient step counts after lung surgery remains unknown. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify those factors related to physical activity measured by step count, during the inpatient stay, and its relationship with symptom severity and perceived health status at hospital admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge. METHODS We studied the inpatient step count of 73 participants who underwent lung resection surgery. The number of steps was measured using a triaxial accelerometer. The health status and the severity of symptoms were examined at hospital admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge. RESULTS Of the 73 participants, 35 wer…

Transmission of Vertical Whole Body Vibration to the Human Body

2008

According to experimental studies, low-amplitude high-frequency vibration is anabolic to bone tissue, whereas in clinical trials, the bone effects have varied. Given the potential of whole body vibration in bone training, this study aimed at exploring the transmission of vertical sinusoidal vibration to the human body over a wide range of applicable amplitudes (from 0.05 to 3 mm) and frequencies (from 10 to 90 Hz). Vibration-induced accelerations were assessed with skin-mounted triaxial accelerometers at the ankle, knee, hip, and lumbar spine in four males standing on a high-performance vibration platform. Peak vertical accelerations of the platform covered a range from 0.04 to 19 in units …

Do Older People with Diabetes Meet the Recommended Weekly Physical Activity Targets? an Analysis of Objective Physical Activity Data

2019

Appropriate management of diabetes mellitus (DM) includes following a healthy lifestyle, in which reaching physical activity (PA) recommendations is an important factor. Despite this, it remains unclear whether people with DM meet the recommended PA targets. We therefore aimed to investigate the proportion of older adults with DM (type 1 and 2) engaging in the recommended amount of PA per week in a cross-sectional study. PA levels were objectively measured using the GT1M ActiGraph accelerometer for seven consecutive days, and the cut-off of 150 min of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was used. To assess the relationship between not meeting the recommendation for, and the significant factors a…

Child socioemotional behavior and adult temperament as predictors of physical activity and sedentary behavior in late adulthood

2023

Background Most studies investigating the association of temperament with physical activity and sedentary behavior have examined children or adolescents, employed cross-sectional or longitudinal designs that do not extend from childhood into adulthood, and utilized self- or parent-reported data on physical activity and sedentary behavior. This longitudinal study investigated whether socioemotional behavior in childhood and temperament in middle adulthood predict accelerometer-measured physical activity and sedentary behavior in late adulthood. Methods This study was based on the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (JYLS). Socioemotional behavior (behavioral ac…

Accelerometer-based physical activity in need satisfaction profiles of schoolchildren: A 3-year follow-up

2023

This study examined moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) trends in physical education (PE) classes and beyond school hours in children's need satisfaction profiles over 3 years. Participants were 445 (girls 256, boys 189) Finnish schoolchildren ( Mage = 11.26 ± 0.32 years). Need satisfaction self-reports and accelerometer-based MVPA data were collected in 17 comprehensive schools over four assessment phases. Four latent profiles based on the need satisfaction trends over time were found: Profiles with Large Decrease, Small Decrease, Small Increase, and Large Increase. The children with the most prominent need satisfaction decreases showed a significant decline in out-of-school MVP…
