The promotion of the historical, cultural, and landscape heritage - Active citizenship
2017
In Italy, the management of the historic, artistic, cultural and landscape heritage and the issues related to its conservation and sustainability are an increasingly urgent issue to discuss, especially in light of the economic crisis of recent years. The policy, in the past, has focused mainly on large restorations, neglecting investments in conservation, an improved accessibility to the heritage, the dissemination of good practices for the protection and maintenance of the same, the enhancement of the landscape. Moreover, to make matters worse, the continuous risk of deterioration, caused by environmental conditions of the context in which the assets are located, and the lack of appropriat…
Using Cloud Computing to Implement a Security Overlay Network
2012
This article proposes and analyzes a general cloud-based security overlay network that can be used as a transparent overlay network to provide services such as intrusion detection systems, antivirus and antispam software, and distributed denial-of-service prevention. The authors analyze each of these in-cloud security services in terms of resiliency, effectiveness, performance, flexibility, control, and cost.
Querytogether : Enabling entity-centric exploration in multi-device collaborative search
2018
Collaborative and co-located information access is becoming increasingly common. However, fairly little attention has been devoted to the design of ubiquitous computing approaches for spontaneous exploration of large information spaces enabling co-located collaboration. We investigate whether an entity-based user interface provides a solution to support co-located search on heterogeneous devices. We present the design and implementation of QueryTogether, a multi-device collaborative search tool through which entities such as people, documents, and keywords can be used to compose queries that can be shared to a public screen or specific users with easy touch enabled interaction. We conducted…
New ECCO model documents for Material Deposit and Transfer Agreements in compliance with the Nagoya Protocol
2020
The European Culture Collections Organisation presents two new model documents for Material Deposit Agreement (MDA) and Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) designed to enable microbial culture collection leaders to draft appropriate agreement documents for, respectively, deposit and supply of materials from a public collection. These tools provide guidance to collections seeking to draft an MDA and MTA, and are available in open access to be used, modified, and shared. The MDA model consists of a set of core fields typically included in a deposit form to collect relevant information to facilitate assessment of the status of the material under access and benefit sharing (ABS) legislation. It a…
Prefix Stripping Re-Re-Revisited: MEG Investigations of Morphological Decomposition and Recomposition
2019
We revisit a long-standing question in the psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic literature on comprehending morphologically complex words: are prefixes and suffixes processed using the same cognitive mechanisms? Recent work using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) to uncover the dynamic temporal and spatial responses evoked by visually presented complex suffixed single words provide us with a comprehensive picture of morphological processing in the brain, from early, form-based decomposition, through lexical access, grammatically constrained recomposition, and semantic interpretation. In the present study, we find that MEG responses to prefixed words reveal interesting early differences in the la…
MADE – A Groupware Application to Support Real-Time Activities of Distributed and Cooperating Communities
2003
Abstract. Distributed work has increased during the last few years. Employees travelling around in different countries still need access to information and must be reachable by their colleagues. A variety of mobile devices have been utilised for this purpose. However, often, when using multiple devices, the information is available to the appropriate device only. Transferring data between the devices is not always an intuitive or easy thing to do – not while conversing at least. This paper presents a groupware application to support real-time actions of distributed communities. The problem of separate devices is addressed by combining multiple tools, media, into a platform independent aggre…
Bioaccessibility and decomposition of cylindrospermopsin in vegetables matrices after the application of an in vitro digestion model.
2018
Research on the human exposure to Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) via consumption of contaminated food is of great interest for risk assessment purposes. The aim of this work is to evaluate for the first time the CYN bioaccessibility in contaminated vegetables (uncooked lettuce and spinach, and boiled spinach) after an in vitro digestion model, including the salivar, gastric and duodenal phases and, colonic fermentation under lactic acid bacteria. The results obtained showed that the digestion processes are able to diminish CYN levels, mainly in the colonic phase, especially in combination with the boiling treatment, decreasing CYN levels in a significant way. Moreover, the potential decomposition…
Does the GATT/WTO promote trade? After all, Rose was right
2019
This paper re-examines the effect of the GATT/WTO on trade using recent econometric developments that allow us estimating structural gravity equations with the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) estimator on a large dataset that requires computing high-dimensional fixed effects. By doing so, we overcome computational limitations that are present in previous studies. In line with Rose’s (Am Econ Rev 94:98–114, 2004) seminal work, we find that, unlike regional trade agreements and currency unions, the GATT/WTO accession has not generated positive trade effects. This result is robust to the use of alternative measures of trade flows, across periods and country groups, to changes in the p…
