Market valuation and acquiring firm performance in the short and long term: Out-of-sample evidence from Spain

We investigate bidder’s short- and long-term performance in periods of high and low valuation market in response to announcements of acquisitions carried out by Spanish listed firms over the period 1991–2016. We find that acquirers of unlisted targets fully react at the announcement date in high valuation periods, meanwhile the underreaction of listed target bidders at the moment of the announcement in low valuation markets is the result of return continuations. In addition, we find that the market reaction do not depend on recent merger history. Este trabajo ofrece evidencia sobre el resultado de la fusión de Price Waterhouse y Coopers & Lybrand respecto a 2 de los objetivos que pretendían alcanzarse con la operación empresarial, como son el crecimiento de la nueva compa˜nía en términos de cifra de negocios y el aumento de la cuota de mercado. Corporate governance and financial performance: The role of ownership and board structure

Abstract This study examines how corporate governance and ownership structure relate to the financial performance of firms. We estimated this relationship using fsQCA. We enhanced our analysis using complementary linear and non-linear multiple regression analysis. The panel data used in this study covered 1207 companies from 59 countries across 19 sectors for the period 2013 to 2015. The study makes two main contributions. First, the multiple empirical techniques employed in this study offer a broader approach to the empirical analysis of financial performance. Second, the study aids our understanding of the role of corporate governance and ownership in the financial performance of firms.

Main drivers of consultancy services: A meta-analytic approach

Abstract This meta-analysis incorporates the results from 34 separate studies examining fee models for consultancy services whereby the consulting firm provides both audit and advisory services to its customers. The findings indicate a number of key determinants of consultancy bills: client size, audit fees, auditors being from a “Big Audit Firm,” client's financial difficulties, and prior experience with the legal auditors. Data analytics in banks' audit: The case of loan loss provisions in Uruguay

Abstract The purpose of this study is two-fold: firstly, to analyze the benefits of implementing an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and using eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) format to report in the banking industry considering the industry's specific risks and complexities. Secondly, to show that both, ERP and XBRL are necessary to successfully use Computer Assisted Audit Techniques (CAATs) while performing audit procedures to verify the compliance of certain crucial regulatory requirements. The study shows the possible consequences of not using CAATs to audit the compliance of loan loss provisions' regulatory requirements in Uruguay.

Work–life balance and firms: A matter of women?

Abstract The work–life balance (WLB) literature reports a positive relationship between the presence of female workers in firms and the implementation of WLB measures. Examining these findings from an alternative methodological perspective, this study adopts a fuzzy-set approach to analyze empirical data from 87 Spanish SMEs. The study's main finding is that the presence of women does not determine the level of implementation of WLB policies. Conversely, the absence of women does seem to determine the absence of such policies. Likewise, the absence of organizational commitment to WLB leads to the absence of WLB policies.

Linking female entrepreneurs' motivation to business survival.

Abstract Analysis of entrepreneurs' motives in the framework of organizational behavior theory is a popular research area regarding female entrepreneurship. This study analyzes women entrepreneurs' motives (propensity for risk, finding a work–life balance, desire to develop business skills, need to seek self-employment, and desire to earn more than in paid employment) to achieve survival of their businesses through crisp set qualitative comparative analysis (csQCA). Analysis yields the following results: 1) women whose motive is to pursuit a better work–life balance are less likely to success; and 2) women whose motive is risk-taking are more likely to success.
