Fall Detection Using Location Sensors and Accelerometers
2015
The rapid aging of the world's population is driving the development of pervasive solutions for elder care. These solutions, which often involve fall detection with accelerometers, are accurate in laboratory conditions but can fail in some real-life situations. To overcome this, the authors present the Confidence system, which detects falls mainly with location sensors. A user wears one to four tags. By detecting tag locations with sensors, the system can recognize the user's activity, such as falling and then lying down afterward, as well as the context in terms of the location in the home. The authors used a scenario consisting of events difficult to recognize as falls or nonfalls to comp…
Validity of three smartwatches in estimating energy expenditure during outdoor walking and running.
2022
Commercially wrist-worn devices often present inaccurate estimations of energy expenditure (EE), with large between-device differences. We aimed to assess the validity of the Apple Watch Series 6 (AW), Garmin FENIX 6 (GF) and Huawei Watch GT 2e (HW) in estimating EE during outdoor walking and running. Twenty young normal-weight Chinese adults concurrently wore three index devices randomly positioned at both wrists during walking at 6 km/h and running at 10 km/h for 2 km on a 400- meter track. As a criterion, EE was assessed by indirect calorimetry (COSMED K5). For walking, EE from AW and GF was significantly higher than that obtained by the K5 (p < 0.001 and 0.002, respectively), but…
Technical determinants of competitive rifle shooting performance
2018
The purpose of this thesis was to identify technical determinants of elite level air rifle and biathlon standing shooting performance and investigate how these technical determinants are affected by training, competition situation, or intense exercise. Forty international and national level air rifle shooters and 17 biathletes participated in the studies. In air rifle shooting, shooting performance, aiming point trajectory, and postural balance were measured from each shot in a simulated competition series in the training situation and in the actual competition situation. The shooters’ competition results were collected from each measured season. In biathlon, the same shooting technical var…
Literacy instruction in first grade: classroom‐level associations between reading skills and literacy instruction activities
2022
Background Adapting instruction to individual students' needs is known to be effective, but there is a lack of evidence whether students' reading skills are associated with literacy instruction activities at classroom-level. Both the content of the literacy instruction and teachers' instructional support through instructional management are considered. Methods The data were collected in the context of Finland where first graders' reading skills show great variation at school entry but rapid progress. Students (n = 616) were individually tested on their reading skills, and literacy lessons in 35 classrooms were video recorded in the autumn of first grade. Multilevel path analyses were conduc…
Neurocognitive Predictors of Response to Intervention With GraphoGame Rime
2021
This study explores the neurocognitive predictors of response to intervention with GraphoGame Rime, an adaptive software game designed to aid the learning of English phonics. A cohort of 398 children (aged 6 – 7 years) who had participated in a recent Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) of GraphoGame Rime in the United Kingdom were studied. Half were randomly assigned to play GraphoGame Rime (GG Rime) and the other half were assigned to Business As Usual (BAU). A series of pretests were given prior to the intervention to all participants, designed to measure phonological awareness skills, executive function (EF) skills and the ability to synchronise finger tapping to a rhythmic beat. Finger t…
From conceptualization to constructions in Finnish as an L2 : a case study
2017
AbstractThis study traces the individual learning trajectories of an adult beginner L2 Finnish learner in expressing the extralinguistic concept of evaluation from a dynamic usage-based perspective. Our results provide support for the view of learner language as a dynamic system in which patterns wax and wane and in which a change in one component has the potential to affect the whole system. In the early stages of learning there was a strong preference to use lexical verbs first, and then adjectives. The study also shows that variability plays a role. Finally, the study confirms that the learning of L2 constructions is in some cases item based. However, another highly frequent and superfic…
Subject-verb agreement of finite verbs in the present tense in written productions of Finnish secondary school learners of English as second language
2012
Subjektin ja verbin välinen kongruenssi on englannin kieliopin perusasioita, joka toimii tiettyjen säännön-alaisuuksien mukaisesti. Ilmiö on kuitenkin kiinnostava, sillä jopa edistyneetkin oppijat tekevät konguenssin tuottamisessa virheitä. Tutkim…
