Recycled Polycarbonate Based Nanocomposites

2013

Post-consumer polycarbonate (RPC) blends with various amounts (5, 10, 30 wt. %) of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc) are investigated as potential nanocomposite matrices. At EVAc weight content of 10 wt.% maximum tensile strength σM and impact strength AI increase is observed in comparison to neat RPC. Addition of EVAc, however, reduces resistance to creep as well as decrease thermal stability of the investigated compositions. Addition of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT), however, allows increase modulus of elasticity E and yield strength σY of the investigated RPC blend with 10 wt. % of EVAc. Besides it creep resistance and thermal resistance of the investigated system is increased to …

Evolution of the morphology and characterzation of compatibilized PBT/EVA blends prepared by reactive extrusion

2006

In this work, the possibility of preparing compatibilized blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer by reactive extrusion in the presence of an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) and a bisoxazoline compound (PBO) as compatibilization promoters has been studied. In addition, the evolution of the morphology of the blends under different annealing conditions in the presence and absence of the compatibilizing promoters has been studied. Binary blends of PBT and EVA showed behavior typical of incompatible blends with a gross morphology and bad mechanical performance. The situation was however different for ternary PBT/EVA/EAA and especially for…

Recycled Polycarbonate Blend as Matrix for Development of Polymer Nanocomposite

2012

Summary: Secondary polycarbonate (SPC) is modified with various amounts (5, 10, 30 wt%) of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc) in order to reduce its brittleness. It is observed that at optimal EVAc weight content maximum tensile strength σM and impact strength AI increse by 14% (ωEVAc = 5 wt%) and 450% (ωEVAc = 10 wt%) in comparison to neat SPC, respectively. Addition of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) allowed further increase of elastic modulus E, strength and creep resistance of the investigated SPC blend with 10 wt% of EVAc.

Random Copolymers:  Their Solution Thermodynamics as Compared with That of the Corresponding Homopolymers

2008

Vapor pressure data (at 50 °C) of solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA], polystyrene [PS], and poly(styrene-ran-methyl methacrylate) [P(S-ran-MMA)], with different weight fractions f of styrene units, in either CHCl3, acetone [AC], methyl acetate [MeAc], or toluene [TL] were evaluated with respect to the dependence of the Flory−Huggins interaction parameter χ on polymer concentration and on f. For all solutions under investigation, χ varies considerably with the composition of the mixture, and only for four of them [CHCl3/PS, AC/PMMA, MeAc/PS, and TL/P(S-ran-MMA) f = 0.5] is this dependence linear; another four systems exhibit a minimum [CHCl3/PMMA, CHCl3/P(S-ran-MMA) f = 0.5, TL/PM…

Photo-oxidative degradation of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/nisin antimicrobial films

2012

The photo-oxidative behaviour of different antimicrobial blown films based on poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) was studied. In particular, two samples of EVA containing different level of vinyl acetate comonomer (namely 14% and 28%) were used as matrices while nisin at different concentrations was used as antimicrobial agent. The degradation was followed by analyzing the changes in the spectroscopic behaviour and of the elongation at break measured in tensile tests. Moreover, changes in the antimicrobial activity of the films were followed by measuring the inhibition halo in agar diffusion tests. The results indicate that nisin acts as an excellent UV stabilizer for both samples of EV…

Medroxyprogesterone acetate: steady-state pharmacokinetics bioequivalence of two oral formulations

1989

Two micronized oral formulations of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) (Farlutal and Clinovir) were compared in order to evaluate their relative bioavailability. Sixteen female patients with metastatic breast cancer were entered in a randomized cross-over study on 500-mg MPA tablets repeatedly administered (twice daily for 20 days). At the steady state, similar mean +/- SD serum levels of MPA were obtained (131 +/- 44 ng/ml for Farlutal and 136 +/- 45 ng/ml for Clinovir) and the two formulations proved to be bioequivalent (confidence interval at a significance level of 0.95 = 93%-107%).

Immunoassays for trifloxystrobin analysis. Part II. Assay development and application to residue determination in food.

2014

Immunochemical assays constitute complementary analytical methods for small organic molecule determination. We herein describe the characterisation and optimisation of two competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in different formats using monoclonal antibodies to the Quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide trifloxystrobin. Antibody selectivity was evaluated using a variety of agrochemicals and the main trifloxystrobin metabolite. Acceptable tolerance of the immunoassay to methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile was observed in all cases, whereas a dissimilar influence of buffer pH and ionic strength was found. Moreover, the influence of Tween 20 over the analytical parameters was studi…

Shedding of interleukin-6 receptor and tumor necrosis factor alpha. Contribution of the stalk sequence to the cleavage pattern of transmembrane prote…

2000

A functionally and structurally diverse group of transmembrane proteins including transmembrane forms of mediators or receptors can be proteolytically cleaved to form soluble growth factors or receptors. Recently, the proteolytic activity responsible for pro-tumor necrosis factor alpha (proTNFalpha) processing has been identified and named TACE (TNFalpha converting enzyme). In experiments with TACE deficient (TACE-/-) fibroblasts we found that 4beta-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced shedding of the interleukin-6 receptor (IL-6R) is strongly reduced. A basal hydroxamate sensitive release of IL-6R, however, could still be detected. This result demonstrates that TACE plays a role i…

Test of isotopic fractionation during liquid-liquid extraction of volatile components from fruits

1995

Fruits constitute a natural source of flavoring molecules. Nevertheless, an isotopic fractionation could be induced by the extraction of volatile molecules from fruits. After the addition of six volatile molecules to Italia grape (hexyl acetate, acetic acid, linalool, butanoic acid, 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone, and methyl cinnamate) and five volatile molecules to Primofiori lemon (hexanal, trans-2-hexenyl acetate, 1-hexanol, trans-2-hexenol, and 4-decanolide) before extraction, it has been established that, for a particular extraction procedure, there is no significant difference between the 13 C enrichments of these molecules before and after extraction. Nothing has been concluded for acet…
