Effects of alcohol-free beer on lipid profile and parameters of oxidative stress and inflammation in elderly women

2009

We assessed the influence of alcohol-free beer on factors implicated in atherosclerosis, such as lipid profile, oxidative stress parameters, and proinflammatory cytokines, in postmenopausal women, a population particularly at risk for atherosclerotic disease. The study was carried out in 29 nuns, 58 to 73 y old, who live in a convent with a disciplined, regular, and homogeneous lifestyle. The nuns maintained their habits and diet routine, but their meals were supplemented with 500 mL/d of alcohol-free beer (0.0%) divided into two doses over a 45-d period. Lipid profile, inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, interleukins 1 and 6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and parameters of o…

Erythrocyte-associated apolipoprotein B and its relationship with clinical and subclinical atherosclerosis

2011

Eur J Clin Invest 2012; 42 (4): 365–370 Abstract Background  Apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing lipoproteins are closely linked to atherogenesis. These lipoproteins are transported in plasma and are also associated with blood leucocytes. Our aim was to investigate whether apoB-containing lipoproteins are also present on the surface of erythrocytes and investigate the relationship with the presence of atherosclerosis in a cross-sectional study. Materials and methods  Erythrocyte-bound apoB (ery-apoB) was measured by flowcytometry in subjects with (CAD+) and without coronary artery disease (CAD−), based on coronary angiography or on a history of cardiovascular disease. Intima media thickness (…

Effects of endothelin-1 on the cerebrovascular bed of the goat.

1991

Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the cerebrovascular bed of the goat, the importance of endothelial integrity and the contribution of extracellular Ca2+ to these responses. We measured isometric tension and 45Ca2+ uptake in isolated middle cerebral arteries, and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in unanesthetized animals. ET-1 elicited concentration-dependent contractions which were potentiated in arteries without endothelium. Ca2+-free medium and nicardipine inhibited, and Bay K 8644 potentiated the ET-1-induced contractions. ET-1 enhanced 45Ca2+ uptake in isolated arteries. Injections of ET-1 directly into the cerebral circulation decrease…

Pathophysiology, diagnosis and prognostic implications of endothelial dysfunction

2008

Endothelial dysfunction (ED) in the setting of cardiovascular risk factors such as hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic smoking as well as in patients with heart failure has been shown to be at least in part dependent on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide and the subsequent decrease in vascular bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO). Methods to quantify endothelial dysfunction include forearm plethysmography, flow-dependent dilation of the brachial artery, finger-pulse plethysmography, pulse curve analysis, and quantitative coronary angiography after intracoronary administration of the endothelium-dependent vasodilator acetylcholine. S…

Deleterious effect of glycation on the ability of HDL to counteract the inhibitory effect of oxidized LDL on endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation

2013

Background Contrary to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) from normolipidaemic and normoglycaemic subjects, HDL from diabetic patients loses its ability to reverse the inhibition of vasorelaxation induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The aim of this study was to analyze the role of glycation, a major abnormality observed in diabetes, on the impairment of the vasorelaxant effect of HDL. Methods HDL from healthy subjects was glycated in vitro by incubation in glucose 200 mmol/L for 3 days. Vasoreactivity was evaluated by the relaxation response to acetylcholine of rabbit aorta rings pre-contracted with noradrenaline, before and after 2 h incubation with or without different lipoprot…

Intravenous ascorbic acid to prevent and treat cancer-associated sepsis?

2011

Abstract The history of ascorbic acid (AA) and cancer has been marked with controversy. Clinical studies evaluating AA in cancer outcome continue to the present day. However, the wealth of data suggesting that AA may be highly beneficial in addressing cancer-associated inflammation, particularly progression to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multi organ failure (MOF), has been largely overlooked. Patients with advanced cancer are generally deficient in AA. Once these patients develop septic symptoms, a further decrease in ascorbic acid levels occurs. Given the known role of ascorbate in: a) maintaining endothelial and suppression of inflammatory markers; b) protection fro…

Mycophenolate mofetil and enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium in the treatment of pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus.

2014

What is known and objective: Pemphigus is a severe, potentially life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease. The use of corticosteroids has dramatically improved the prognosis and changed its course. However, current morbidity of pemphigus is largely iatrogenic, caused by side effects of the long-term, high-dose corticosteroid therapy that is necessary to sustain disease control. In order to minimize side effects, a range of corticosteroid-sparing immunosuppressive agents have been introduced, including mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and enteric-coated mycophenolate sodium (EC-MPS). A systematic review was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of MMF and EC-MPS in the treatment of pemphig…

Gastroesophageal reflux in young children treated for esophageal atresia: evaluation with pH-multichannel intraluminal impedance

2011

Objectives: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and dismotility occur frequently after repair of esophageal atresia (EA). GER-associated complications can manifest either early or later; then precocious diagnosis and treatment are essential. The aim of the study was to evaluate characteristics of GER and esophageal clearance in children treated for EA with distal tracheoesophageal fistula, using pH-multichannel intraluminal impedance (pH-MII). Patients and Methods: Twenty-two children (ages 3‐40 months) treated for EA at birth, and 20 normal children of similar age with suspected GER disease were included in the study. Impedance parameters were analyzed according to age and symptoms. Results: Ref…
