Generation of narrowband antisymmetric lamb waves using a formed laser source in the ablative regime

2007

A formed laser source, using a four-element lenticular array, is used in the ablative regime to generate select, narrowband, acoustic plate waves. The arrangement of the array produces acoustical signals that have frequencies compatible with the response of the broadband capacitive air-coupled transducer used in this study. A simplified concept is presented to explain the effect of a line array source on the frequency content of acoustic waves. The analytical model for a point pulse surface displacement is derived from the point load solution to Lamb's problem. The point pulse displacement elements of a line array source are summed mathematically, taking into account all applicable propagat…

FDTD characterization of evanescent modes-multimode analysis of waveguide discontinuities

2000

In this paper, a finite-difference time-domain numerical dispersion relation for evanescent waves is derived, and its impact on the modeling accuracy is studied. The numerical evanescent constant is found to differ from the analytical one. As a result, a correction must be used to compute discontinuity parameters. This influences the reference plane chosen for the analysis of propagating modes. Moreover, on calculating multimode transmission and reflection coefficients, the dispersion for evanescent higher order modes is determinant. The dispersive relation is derived, discussed, and used to correct the evanescent constants for the multimode analysis of a waveguide discontinuity.

Wavelet analysis and neural network classifiers to detect mid-sagittal sections for nuchal translucency measurement

2016

We propose a methodology to support the physician in the automatic identification of mid-sagittal sections of the fetus in ultrasound videos acquired during the first trimester of pregnancy. A good mid-sagittal section is a key requirement to make the correct measurement of nuchal translucency which is one of the main marker for screening of chromosomal defects such as trisomy 13, 18 and 21. NT measurement is beyond the scope of this article. The proposed methodology is mainly based on wavelet analysis and neural network classifiers to detect the jawbone and on radial symmetry analysis to detect the choroid plexus. Those steps allow to identify the frames which represent correct mid-sagitta…

Embodied sound design

2018

Abstract Embodied sound design is a process of sound creation that involves the designer’s vocal apparatus and gestures. The possibilities of vocal sketching were investigated by means of an art installation. An artist–designer interpreted several vocal self-portraits and rendered the corresponding synthetic sketches by using physics-based and concatenative sound synthesis. Both synthesis techniques afforded a broad range of artificial sound objects, from concrete to abstract, all derived from natural vocalisations. The vocal-to-synthetic transformation process was then automated in SEeD, a tool allowing to set and play interactively with physics- or corpus-based sound models. The voice-dri…

Objectivization of the electrical discharge measurement results taken by the acoustic emission method

2006

The subject matter of this paper refers to the improvement of the acoustic emission method (AE) in its application for diagnostics of insulation systems of power appliances whereas the detailed subject matter is connected with determining the possibilities and indicating the range of using statistical and digital methods of signal processing for the evaluation of the AE pulses generated by partial discharges (PDs), which can occur in paper-oil insulation of power transformers.

Identification of Precious Artefacts: The Sonic Imprint for Small Artefacts

2010

Identification of artworks is mainly based on a few characteristics which can be observed using non-invasive tools (sight, touch, simple instruments), the investigated properties being geometry, weight, colours, texture, etc. Nowadays, technology allows reproducing all these characteristics to such an extent that even expert conservators can be deceived: in particular at the present time even the geometry of an artwork can be easily reproduced with the help of laser scanner analysis and with a rapid prototyping machine or a computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine. We propose a new tool, the Sonic Imprint, producing a code capable of identifying a rigid artefact from its vibrational…

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor is critically involved in basal and fluoxetine-stimulated adult hippocampal cell proliferation and in anxiety,…

2011

Intensive research is devoted to unravel the neurobiological mechanisms mediating adult hippocampal neurogenesis, its regulation by antidepressants, and its behavioral consequences. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is expressed in the CNS, where its function is unknown. Here, we show, for the first time, the relevance of MIF expression for adult hippocampal neurogenesis. We identify MIF expression in neurogenic cells (in stem cells, cells undergoing proliferation, and in newly proliferated cells undergoing maturation) in the subgranular zone of the rodent dentate gyrus. A causal function for MIF in cell proliferation was shown using genetic (M…

Morphology and magnetoresistance of Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al-based tunnelling junctions

2009

Some ferromagnetic Heusler compounds are theoretically predicted to be half metallic materials, i.e. to be characterized by a huge spin polarization at the Fermi energy. We investigate the correlations between junction preparation conditions, morphology and transport properties of planar MgO/Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al/AlOx/Co/CoOx/Pt tunnelling junctions. Epitaxial Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al thin films were deposited by dc and rf magnetron sputtering on different buffer layers (Cr, Fe, MgO) on MgO(1 0 0) substrates. By RHEED, LEED and in situ STM investigations different surface morphologies were observed. Atomically flat surfaces with Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al unit cell sized steps (B2 structure) were obtained by rf sput…

Solving ultrasonic ray tracing in parts with multiple material layers through Root-Finding methods

2022

Ultrasonic testing has been used for material analysis and inspection since 1930's. Nevertheless, the applicability of ultrasonic waves to new complex cases is still growing, thanks to the availability of powerful electronics and software. However, the complication that slows down the deployment of ultrasonic inspection to geometric complex parts and structures arises from the wave refraction phenomenon. A clear understanding of the ultrasound wave propagation, impacted by refractions, is crucial to interpret the data obtained from the inspection of multi-layered/multi-medium test subjects as it is not always possible to assume that mechanical waves travel in straight lines. This work prese…

The repeatability and reproducibility of calibrating signals generated by Hsu-Nielsen method

2005

During the measurements of the acoustic emission signals taken both in the laboratory and industrial conditions it is necessary to carry out calibration of the measurement paths used. One of the basic calibration methods is the one invented by Hsu-Nielsen, which consists in generating an acoustic signal during breaking a scriber placed in a special head put on an automatic pencil. The paper presents the measurement results of acoustic signals taken at various structural parameters of calibrating heads, which was done to determine their influence on the repeatability of the results obtained. Moreover, the measurements were taken for ten identical, in relation to their geometrical measurement…
