Defect detection in additively manufactured titanium prosthesis by flying laser scanning thermography

2018

Abstract Metal additive manufacturing is nowadays a well-established technology for cutting edge applications in the automotive, aerospace, defense and medical sectors. Since additive metal deposition is basically a welding method, which creates parts by successively adding layers of material, there is a chance for defects like pores, cracks, inclusions and lack of fusion to develop. As a matter of fact, interlayer and intralayer defects are often observed in additive manufactured components. However, if one considers the typical end applications along with the high costs involved in metal additive manufactured components, a “zero defect” target is close to mandatory for this technology. Pl…

Influence of different approaches to the cerebellopontine angle on the function of the intermediate nerve

2007

Object Surgery in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is a standard procedure at many centers. Outcome is focused mainly on preservation of hearing and facial function postoperatively. The nonmotor part of the facial nerve, the intermediate nerve, is nearly neglected nowadays. Methods A retrospective study was designed, including a questionnaire that was sent to 178 patients who had undergone surgery between 2000 and 2004. Data were obtained in 156 cases. The questionnaire was divided into five parts assessing the presence of increased tearing, reduced tearing, salivation disturbances, increased nasal secretions, and abnormalities in taste. Finally, a self-assessment of patient symptoms was a…

A New Wavelet Tool to Quantify Non-Periodicity of Non-Stationary Economic Time Series

2020

We introduce a new wavelet tool, the windowed scale index, to study the degree of non-periodicity of time series. The windowed scale index is based on some recently defined tools, such as the windowed scalogram and the scale index. This novel measure is appropriate for non-stationary time series whose characteristics change over time and, therefore, it can be applied to a wide variety of disciplines. Furthermore, we revise the concept of the scale index and pose a theoretical problem: it is known that if the scale index of a function is not zero then it is non-periodic, but if the scale index of a function is zero, then it is not proved that it has to be periodic. This problem is solved for…

Enabling robotic adaptive behaviour capabilities for new industry 4.0 automated quality inspection paradigms

2020

The seamless integration of industrial robotic arms with server computers, sensors and actuators can revolutionise the way in which automated non-destructive testing (NDT) is performed and conceived. Achieving effective integration and realising the full potential of robotic systems presents significant challenges, since robots, sensors and end-effector tools are often not necessarily designed to be put together and form a holistic system. This paper presents recent breakthroughs, opening up new scenarios for the inspection of product quality in advanced manufacturing. Many years of research have brought to software platforms the ability to integrate external data acquisition instrumentatio…

Sonification of Emotion : Strategies for Continuous Display of Arousal and Valence

2013

Sonification is an interdisciplinary field of research broadly interested in the use of sound to convey information. A fundamental attribute of sound is its ability to evoke emotion, but the display of emotion as a continuous data type has not yet received adequate attention. This paper motivates the use of sonification for display of emotion in affective computing, and as a means of targeting mechanisms of emotion elicitation in music. Environmental sound and music are presented as two possible sources for non-verbal auditory emotion elicitation, each with specific determinants and available features. The review concludes that the auditory-cognitive mechanisms of brain-stem reflex and emot…

Neurological deficits like CVA, Trigeminal neuralgia, Post herpetic neuralgia, Meningitis, Cervical Myelopathy, Demyelinating Disease, Acoustic Neuro…

2018

Patients and methods. A total number of 35 patients with neurological deficits, like cerebrovascular accident (CVA), trigeminal neuralgia, post herpetic neuralgia, meningitis, cervical myelopathy, demyelinating disease, acoustic neuroma, muscular neuropathy and parkinsonism were treated with ozone therapy in our institution. Results. Group 1) Hemorrhagic - 6 patients Group 2) Ischemic - 29 Patients Both the groups showed improvement varying from 20% to 100%: • Hemorrhagic patients took more time for improvement as compare to ischemic group. • Hemorrhagic patients showed partial recovery. • Ischemic group showed almost 90% - 100% recovery. Patients who received ozone therapy after 12 months …

A Pedagogical Software for the Analysis of Loudspeaker Systems

2009

In this paper, a pedagogical software for the design and analysis of loudspeaker systems is presented, with emphasis on training students in the interaction between system parameters. Loudspeakers are complex electromechanical system, whose behavior is neither intuitive nor easy to understand by inexperienced students. Although commercial simulation software provides computation of the equations governing loudspeaker systems, they are mainly focused on the final product and are intended for experienced audio engineers. The proposed software was intentionally designed for education and training purposes. This software allows students to investigate loudspeaker systems that involve complex in…

Acoustic rendering of particle-based simulation of liquids in motion

2009

In interaction and interface design, the representation of continuous processes often uses liquid metaphors, such as dripping or streaming. When an auditory display of such processes is required, an approach to sound-synthesis based on the physics of liquids in motion would be the most convincing, especially when real-time interaction is into play. In order to bridge the complexity of fluid-dynamic simulations with the needs of interactive sonification, we propose a multi-rate sound synthesis of liquid phenomena. Low-rate smoothed-particle hydrodynamics is used to model liquids in motion and to trigger sound-emitting events. Such events, such as solid-liquid collision, or bubble formation, …

Analysis of different Sleeve Ferrite Cores Performance according to their Dimensions

2019

Sleeve ferrite core is an EMI suppressor widely used to reduce the conductive and radiated electromagnetic noise in cables. The interconnection of different electronic systems through cables is becoming more difficult due to the hard restrictions related to EMC compliance requirements. Thereby, the research of new solutions able to provide a great attenuation ratio in a wide frequency band is a challenge. This contribution focuses on analyzing and comparing the performance of a novel sleeve ferrite solution based on a nanocrystalline (NC) structure with several materials with different compositions. This component is able to provide a high initial permeability value at the same time that ma…
