Elastoplastic Damaging Model for Adhesive Anchor Systems. I: Theoretical Formulation and Numerical Implementation

2011

In this and in the companion paper, the mechanical response of adhesive anchor systems is theoretically and numerically predicted and experimentally observed. The theoretical prediction is on the basis of an elastoplastic damaging model formulated to predict the structural response associated with the development of a fracture in adhesive anchor systems. This part describes the analytical model developed in the framework of a thermodynamically consistent theory, which assumes adhesion where the structure is sound, and friction in correspondence with the fracture. Isotropic damage is considered. The model can predict the structural behavior at the interface between two surfaces of ductile, b…

Delamination of 2D coordination polymers : the role of solvent and ultrasound

2019

Two novel cadmium-based 2D coordination polymers have been synthesized and characterized. Experimental results evidence that the best delamination processes occurs when weak interactions dominate the cohesion between layers and solvent molecules are occluded within the crystalline network. In this case, the delamination of the crystals occurs spontaneously in water. On top of that, and thanks to the high stability of the resulting (flake) colloidal dispersions, we have completed a detailed study of the sonication assisted delamination impact by: I) comparison of two different sonication approaches (bath vs. tip sonication) and II) optimization of final flake morphology and yield by controll…

The Magnetic Properties of Electrical Pulses Delivered by Deep-Brain Stimulation Systems

2020

The aim of this article is to analyze the magnetic field properties for both the monopolar and bipolar electrode configurations of deep-brain stimulation electrodes using 3-D magnetic field measurements and to investigate if the magnetic measurements enable a localization of the electrode as a proof of concept. Therefore, a simplified head phantom with an integrated deep-brain stimulation electrode was created to measure the magnetic flux densities in all the three dimensions with a fluxgate magnetometer over a sensor trajectory of measuring points inside the magnetically shielded chamber. The magnitude of the magnetic flux density for monopolar stimulation and bipolar stimulation is in the…

Burner backflow reduction in regeneration furnace

2011

In the present case from the steel industry, waste hydrochloric acid from the pickling process is regenerated using spray roasting. The process is driven by four burners placed symmetrically along the periphery of the cylindrical main section of the reactor. Severe problems with gas backflow and sintering of iron oxide inside the burner chamber have led to a complete shut down of the process 1-2 times every week, which is a frequency which significantly affects the productivity. In this study the influence of a kick-out on the gas flow in the vicinity of the burner chamber is investigated numerically. It is shown that the kick-out geometry creates a vortical low pressure region preventing t…

Epoxy composites filled with high surface area-carbon fillers

2013

Citation: J. Appl. Phys. 114, 164304 (2013); doi: 10.1063/1.4826529 (Received 24 July 2013; accepted 6 October 2013; published online 22 October 2013) A comprehensive analysis of electrical, electromagnetic (EM), mechanical, and thermal properties of epoxy resin composites filled with 0.25–2.0 wt. % of carbon additives characterized by high surface area, both nano-sized, like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CBH), and micro-sized exfoliated graphite (EG), was performed. We found that the physical properties of both CNTs- and CBH-based epoxy resin composites increased all together with filler content and even more clearly for CBH than for CNTs. In the case of EG-based composites, go…

Coded excitation speeds up the detection of the fundamental flexural guided wave in coated tubes

2016

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) permits ultrasonic assessment of the wall thickness of solid waveguides, such as tubes or, e.g., long cortical bones. Recently, an optical non-contact method was proposed for ultrasound excitation and detection with the aim of facilitating the FFGW reception by suppressing the interfering modes from the soft coating. This technique suffers from low SNR and requires iterative physical scanning across the source-receiver distance for 2D-FFT analysis. This means that SNR improvement achieved by temporal averaging becomes time-consuming (several minutes) which reduces the applicability of the technique, especially in time-critical applications such as…

Characterization of Different Cable Ferrite Materials to Reduce the Electromagnetic Noise in the 2–150 kHz Frequency Range

2017

The gap of standardization for conducted and field coupled electromagnetic interferences (EMI) in the 2–150 kHz frequency range can lead to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) problems. This is caused by power systems such as Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controlled rectifiers, photovoltaic inverters or charging battery units in electric vehicles. This is a very important frequency spectral due to interferences generated in a wide range of devices and, specifically, communication problems in the new technologies and devices incorporated to the traditional grid to convert it into a Smart Grid. Consequently, it is necessary to provide new solutions to attenuate this kind of interference, which…

Magneto-optical characterization of single crystalline Co2FeAl0.4Si0.6thin films on MgO(1 0 0) substrates with Cr and MgO seed layers

2013

We report on the experimental investigation of the influence of a seed layer on the magnetic properties of the full-Heusler alloy Co2FeAl0.4Si0.6 (CFAS). The studied magnetic films are grown epitaxially on MgO (1 0 0) substrates with Cr and/or MgO seed layers. By employing magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry we show that magnetic anisotropy can be tuned by choosing the proper seed layer. The results on CFAS show an overall uniaxial anisotropy plus a biaxial contribution which depends on the seed layer. In addition, if grown on MgO, a sharp increase in the coercive field HC at a series of angles symmetric with respect to the easy axis is present. Scanning Kerr-microscope imaging is perf…

Laser ablation of a silicon target in chloroform: formation of multilayer graphite nanostructures

2013

With the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods of analysis we show that the laser ablation of a Si target in chloroform (CHCl3) by nanosecond UV pulses (40 ns, 355 nm) results in the formation of about 50–80 nm core–shell nanoparticles with a polycrystalline core composed of small (5–10 nm) Si and SiC mono-crystallites, the core being coated by several layers of carbon with the structure of graphite (the shell). In addition, free carbon multilayer nanostructures (carbon nano-onions) are also found in the suspension. On the basis of a comparison with similar laser ablation experiments implement…

Design approach for high efficiency NFC systems with magnetic shielding materials

2020

The performance of a Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna may be diminished when it is placed close to any conductive surface such as a metallic case or a battery. This degradation is caused due to the stray magnetic field created by the eddy currents induced on the surface, which is opposite to the intended field generated by the NFC antenna. One of the first solutions that come to mind to designers when facing this problem is the use of high permeability magnetic shielding based on sintered ferrite sheets. This is a good approach but something that is not generally taken into account is that these materials introduce an additional inductance to the NFC antenna. If the permeability of th…
